Ever wondered why the marysville fire department runs one of there ladder aerials on every run? This is the most expensive piece of equipment in the department and we use it for every run and occasionally to get groceries. What use do you have for a aerial ladder for a car wreck? It is because you don't see what else is going on. The fire department is VERY busy, and VERY understaffed. A lot of times, they can't spare apparatus. They serve 82 square miles and 300k people (in addition to mutual aid, when another department needs help) with a daily staff of 8-10 firefighter/paramedics. Since when does only one emergency happen at a time? There can be several incidents happening at once.
As for the purchase of the ladder, it was funded by a grant, and REPLACED A 32 YEAR OLD TRUCK. I don't think that's very selfish, do you? They waited to recieve a free truck instead of requiring the City of Marysville to purchase the $675k truck. And fyi-- How many hands do you want on your or your family members to get you out of a car after a car accident? It takes more than just two, who staff the medic. What if you need cut out of your car? Who is going to do that? Also, do you want a car of some idiot who is running late and disregarding the emergency happening in front of them, trying to pass through the scene to hit or injure you/your family/those who are caring for you? There is an entire class on how to position fire apparatus to PROTECT those on scene.
As for them going to the store, I must revert back to "Since when does only one emergency happen at a time." What if everyone else in the station is on a run except for the ladder? "Send someone by themselves in a car." Then they don't meet minimum staffing requirements and can't respond to an emergency. How upset would you be if it took 10 extra minutes for them to get to your emergency because they had to respond to the grocery store to pick up their crewmember, then head out to the run?
Contrary to popular belief, firefighters and paramedics are highly trained individuals who work very hard for a living, and don't go about their day kicked back in a recliner. They are on duty for an exhausting 24 hours at a time. You can't ask the community to only call between certain hours, or to call back at the end of lunchtime.
