HOG08, I would have to agree, since I think they did a fantastic job on the western stretch that was closed in 2008. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Do you really consider this 'breaking news' in that you interrupt the regular schedule programming to have the public officials brag about what they are paid to do? This is ridiculous! Announce the dang thing when it is FINISHED! Who knows what will happen between now and Dec. 1, 2009.

You people must be starved for attention for this stupidity!

I am eating my words. I said it would be over budget and finished late. I was worried I'd have to change jobs to avoid the horrendous traffic nightmare getting into the city. BUT... chew, chew, chew, things have gone amazingly well. My commute time hasn't changed by even 5 minutes, and now they're getting the thing done early and under budget. They must have an amazing project management team. The rest of the country should take a lesson from the way St. Louisans pulled together to get this huge project done. Can't wait to drive the new stretch! Good job.

i'm happy the work will be done early but when did the normal person ever get a huge bonus just for finishing their job on time. Hopefully the bonus they get will be given to the workers, the ones who poured the concrete and worked out in extreme weather conditions, not just the bosses and owners of the company.

For those of us that are impacted by this closure on a daily basis, this actually IS big news. My commute time has doubled in the last two years, and this is news I've been waiting for. Sorry if it interrupted your Judge Mathis or something...

All told this was NOTHING compared to the last rebuild of Hwy 40 in the 70s-80s when they put in all the downtown exchanges.
The highway was shut down during my junior year of high school; around 1977. I graduated from high school went away to college for 4 years graduating in 1982 and came back to St. Louis and Hwy 40 was STILL shut down. It was 1983 or 84 before it opened again.
I have gladly accepted the impositions knowing they would not last nearly as long as the last shut down!
Thank you MODoT

After MODOT allowed Gateway Constructors to be it's own Quality Inspector" & after they ruptured a Laclede Gas main in Richmond Heights in 12/08 & later snapped 12,000 V. wires where I-64/US 40 goes over Yale AV's in Richmond Heights in 7/09, I just hope the Bridges/Overpasses will withstand the big earthquake that we are supposed to get soon.
Good job except for

The actual builders have done quite a nice job, but the design leaves much to be desired. The sound walls make one feel like a rat in a maze, and when it rains, this must be what driving in River Des Peres must be like. Quite boring of a drive, actually. The sound walls were unnecessary west of McKnight, as there was already plenty of green space, trees, bushes, to quell the noise, and much nicer to look at. I guess I will keep going out 44 to 270 to get to Chesterfield and beyond so I don't fall asleep from boredom.

Karen you must be working at their location. An announcement would have served just as well instead of having to listen to all the phoney balonies like Slay...get it? The only guy up there was the one that did the building - the rest is just hoopla!

WOW. Maybe the builders, Pace Construction, of Big Bend from Sulphur Springs to New Ballwin Road need to take some pointers from Gateway. The mentioned Big Bend project has been a total nightmare for THREE years and it is just now, almost finished. That sure turned into a retirement project. OK MR. DOOLEY! What's your excuse for this fiasco?

Someone gets in a bit of a muddle today and it could take some unravelling. For instance, they might get their wires crossed, leading to all sorts of misunderstandings. You might also encounter someone who is trying to rewrite history, perhaps because they can't bear to remember things as they really were. Should you set them straight or leave well alone?
