Hi, fellow explorers!
I went to Roney's Point Feb. 6th to take some pictures. I had never been there before, and was warned that I'd get a creepy vibe on the way there. I sure did. Right before I turned off the main road to go up the hill (what's up with those perfectly aligned trees???!!!) the creepiest feeling came over me. It also doesn't help that the sign says "Dead End."
I didn't know it at the time, but I actually followed the scary caretaker/Sheriff guy up the hill, which explains why there was no chain across the road. I was almost in his driveway before I could turn around, but he never came outside or anything.
It's definitely a creepy place, and I wouldn't go there at night. I didn't get out of my car.
Just be warned, if the guy does catch you on the property, you're screwed, because he has "No Trespassing" signs EVERYWHERE, so I'm sure the "I'm lost" excuse wouldn't fly. I've also heard that he shoots rock salt at trespassers with a rifle/shotgun, so watch out for that. I lucked out by not running into him, but I wouldn't press my luck again. If you go there, I don't recommend entering any of the buildings.
I don't recommend getting out of your car, either.
rumor has it that there are bodys of former patients buried between those trees.

I would not be surprised. There were no laws against burying people on your property then. To bad the history is not released or somehow obtainable online. That would be wonderful for researching to find a relative that was there, or even if they could possibly be buried there. What a great history and some wonderful pictures people have put up on this thread. Wow...I'm impressed. Thank you all!

Eh, we've investigated this location several times. Sorry guys, but the stories about ghosts are simply not true.

http://wvparanormalsociety.com/...

The idea is there, but we found nothing to indicate that any type of paranormal activity was occurring.

There's been rumors that after people died at this hospital/asylum they were buried behind the building and after the flood a few years back the bodies were washed up Is this true?
Don't know but there are also rumors that when it was burning down all the patients were escaping so the guards shot them and they ended up burying them in between each one of the trees on both sides of the road leading up to the asylum, that's why all the trees are 6-7 ft apart..sounds a bit far fetched though!

I don't know what you people are talking about! I was just up there today and there is nothing scary at all about the place. Got out of the car and went inside each building and took pictures. The only thing that I was scared of was this sheriff that supposedly lives up there. There is a house at the end of the road but didn't drive up that far. There is nothing really abnormal about the place at all except the stories that I read before going up there.

You people went up to Roney's Point at the wrong time. 2 weeks ago I paid a visit to the site. Curiosity built up for months and we just had to visit. It was almost dusk and we thought possibly a tad too late to visit, but I'm sure glad we did. My driver was very apprehensive but I urged him on slowly, passed the strategically planted trees, eerily reminiscent of the moss covered trees lining the roads in the south. Finally got to the top of the road and spotted what looked like an old storage bldg. 200 yds down the road. Appeared someone dodged into the bldg. and slid the door shut. We immediately turned the car around near the old grain silo [probably used when the brewery was located there].
Just had make a quick trip into the bldgs and snap some shots.
You could still see remnants of the fire and imagine the zombie like tenants scurrying to flee the inferno. This is when things turned ugly!
Clanking noises erupted from the darkened stairway to the cellar. That when I hastiley vacated the premises for the car.
My driver also heard the 'clanking' which became increasing louder. Off we went.
I'm going back and this time in mid afternoon and
when I can see better what is going on.
Who wants to go with me?

I have been up there several times, and I can tell you that the building close to the troopers house was the Old TB hospital..I only know that because I went to the troopers house myself and asked about the history of both buildings..And the down the road from the troopers house, the building you see comming up the hill was the old Asylum, before that it was a man's house that he built himself after he retired..It later became the states after he had passed away..I got permission to check out the asylum and it's all hollowed out and nothing is in there besides a few pieces of wood..And the TB hospital you can't go in..The windows and doors are boarded up pretty good..

I grew up in the Wheeling area and went to that place when I was a teenager (1983-84ish). It was a pretty evil lookin' place. Gave me the willies.
I was lookin' on Google Earth for it. Anyone know the exact location?
The first building you come up to is what use to be the Asylum, and if you go back the road a little more you'll find this huge building which was the TB hospital, looks alot like and old school..

I am a ghost who lives (so to speak) at Roney's Point.

I'd just like to say that I wish all you loudmouth redneck rubberneckers would just stay the heck away from the old asylum. We are not currently and we have never shown ourselves to anyone. We have never caused any disturbances there.

We keep to ourselves and expect the same treatment.

Take heed. Leave us alone.

My sister, brother and his wife worked at that place. It was a TB hospital at one time, they wanted it in that area because of it being on a high hill and better air quality. This was back in the early sixties. That's where my brother met his future wife. When I was a little girl, I remembered my sister stayed there during the week and came home on weekends. My brother, called it the poor farm.
My mother was put in that hospital and her records just disappeared. Did they move all the patient's records somewhere else? If so, where? Hadn't thought of that place i years.

There was NEVER an "insane asylum at Roneys Point. The old "school looking building" was a TB sanatorium. Until it closed. Probably in the 1960's The other old building which ther are some pictures of the shell was the home of German immigrant & local businessman Henry Schmulbach (1844-1915). Again it was never used as an "insane asylum". <quoted text>
I can assure you that the Building was a mental Hospital. Before that yes it was the home of Henry Schmulbach. I have been there several times, and I have talked to The trooper right up the road from the old Mansion. The history is, that it used to be The Guy's Home, And later after he passed away his wife sold the property to the County, and thats when it became the mental Hospital.

I was recently discussing the old, abandoned insane asylum up by Roney's Point.
There are two buildings up there that are abandoned. One looks like a school, the other is rumored to be an old asylum.
Does anybody know which is which, and where I could find any information about the buildings? I am very curious of the history....
My mother was a nurse there years ago.. The smaller building was for people with alchol and drug issues.

I'm not interested in the ghosts (although I'm sure there are many!)..I'm interested in finding out if this is where my great-grandmother was hospitalized for psychiatric reasons in the very early 1900's. Anyone know how to find the patient lists?
THANKS!!
I don't have any idea how to get the patients' lists, however, my great grandfather was a patient in the TB hospital sometime around 1935-1940. My mom told me that he didn't there, but in another hospital. please post the lists if you find them, and I'll do the same.

I live in Wheeling and I have been to Roney's point many times. Although the buildings are deffinately scary, especially the main building you can still see smoke coming from the chimney, but the scariest part of that area are the trees leading up to the building. Its on a windy road with trees surrounding it and after one turn all the trees straighen up and they all look the same. It gives you a creepy feeling before you even see the building.

You couldn't have gone in both buildings if you didnt go as far as the sheriff's house because the main building is right next to it. The first building you come to was just the holding cell. And that place is deffinately creepy me and a couple friends went up one night to check it out and we heard a scream come from the second floor. When we ran out the door I tripped and lost my shoe. When I went back for it the next morning it was ripped in half and in the middle of the road. Something didn't want us on that property.

My best friend lived very close to there when we were teenagers. WE played there many times in both the buildings down the street from each other. In the Aslylum YES odd feelings. What we called "The Manson" it was simply broken down (nearly in half) and fun to play in. Yet the cells in the basement were odd feeling.

It's easy to become distracted and confused because your mind is wandering about in all sorts of different directions. You're also in a highly impressionable state so will believe almost anything you're told now, whether it's true or a total flight of fancy.
