come on let's see - vehicles on the beach duhhhhhHhhhhhH!

They really do not pay attention even when not in a vehicle. My dad was near redondo jetty and was drowing in front of a lifeguard tower and the lifeguard never noticed and thank god my sister, brother saved him - lifeguard did not come down from his station until my dad was sitting in his beach chair choking and still the lifeguard did not even take any vitals or ask if he wanted to go to the hosptial to get checked out.

It was near the jetty on the esplanade. They need more training. Need to pay god damn attention and stop driving around when they do not have to. come on vehicles on friggin beaches, have more foot patrol Redondo.

Very pissed!

I hope the lady is doing better and has a speedy recovery. I have always felt the big trucks on the beach are a bad thing. They should use smaller and quieter vehicles like golf carts.

quieter vehicles? why, so more people get injured.

its a rescue vehicle people. equivalent to fire truck or ambulance on the street. when you hear them, move!

unfortunately there have been a few accidents over the last couple of years, however, then hundreds of thousands of people visit LA beaches in any given year - and only three (?) of these accidnents over a few year period, i think you need to keep things in perspective.

Was The Lifeguard rushing to save someone or were they just patroling the beach? If they weren't rushing to a rescue there is NO excuse for running someone over, come on guys watch where your going!

i hope she's doing better, i always recogize the danger of moving vehicles along the beaches and will always somehow mark my spot so where it is very visible not only for my self when i am in the water but also so for the moving vehicles.

i have witnessed some careless driving by non LACoFD vehicles. its a danger and hopefully better safety practices and technology in lifeguard vehicles can prevent this type of accidents from happening in the future.

Lawsuits, schmall suits. The trucks have audible forward and backward alarms.

If you hear one coming, get out of the way.

Here's my suggestion. I would start bringing a flag to stick in the sand to let the morons know someone is there.

Why not have the beach cleaners (Tractors)carve a "TRAFFIC" lane in the sand on weekends and have the "BAYWATCH" people drive along that. You can issue tickets to people who set up camp there and you'd have an emergency access path for transporting injured persons- The cops could use it too and it wouldn't cost a dime extra to do.
OHH wait a min.-that would make sence, can't do that, Never mind

Not surprising. When my son was young, a lifeguard ran over our cooler, towels, chair that my 10 year old son had just vacated. He did stop and did apologize for almost running him over. I am at the beach every day and I see these drivers, including the jumbo litter operators, on their cell phones all the time. More tragedies will occur unless something is done.

We're talking numbers here. The more crowded the sand is, the more likely a vehicle is to have an encounter w/ a beachgoer.

Hi everyone, appreciate your comments. I'm the girl the Lifegaurd ran over this Saterday in Manhattan beach. Just to set the record straight, I was NOT buried in the sand before I was hit. He drove the truck directly over my left forearm, and both upper legs. A few minutes prior he had been yelling at the surfers. I was in an immense amount of pain, but fortunatly nothing was broken. As luck would have it, I walked away with only minor cuts/bruises and soft tissue injuries.
The only thing I asked is that they reconsider the usage of trucks on the beach and opt for safer ATV type vehicle. Thank-you for all your support!

This driving on the beach thing is relatively new and is obviously a completely asanine idea. Up and down the coast, people are getting run over on the beach by the very people who are there to supposedly protect them.

In Oxnard a few years back, a lady was actually killed by this very thing.

How about not driving any vehicles on the beach ever? There is no logical reason for it, no need for it and it is complete BS. I have an eight year old son and I have to constantly be on the lookout for these morons on the beach when I am there with him because they drive WAY TOO CLOSE to where people are laying down in the sand and it is an accident/tragedy waiting to happen.

To the lady that was run over, I am glad to hear you are OK. Hopefully, this ridiculous policy will be re-examined and changed soon. 20 years ago you never saw trucks driving around on the beach and everyone survived just fine.

The towers have an area that is to be kept clear so that these things don't happen. Was the woman in the clear area, or was the truck outside of it? Either way, I do hope she is OK.

drug and alcohol test the life guard / los angeles county fire fighter , since all these guys are firemen ! sue the crap out of them , try 2 million , file a claim at the manhattan beotch city hall - the form is called claims and damages , dont jump to a fast settlement or a smooth talking lawyer representing them , after you get your $500 thousand dollars , start a femminist group that demands drug and alcohol testing of all POLICE OFFICERS AND LIFE GURDS AND FIREMEN , EVERY 2 WEEKS RANDOM DRUG TESTING OF THESE PUBLIC SERVANTS . i hope you feel better . heres the video http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Did the lifeguard immediately stop and give you aid? It would be useful to know how he reacted to this accident. At any rate, I can't think of a more stupid thing to do than give people vehicles to use on an occupied beach. Jet-ski's - OK. ATV's - maybe. But pickups? That's truly assinine.
