Closing this school, or reconfiguring it, makes no sense at all. If the student population is below acceptable levels expand the boundaries. Colton should be commended for its successful transition to k-8. The reduced administrative costs in combining these two schools should be taken into consideration as well. (fyi: I do not have children at any MPUSD school)

It does make sense if you have an understanding of the need to run a fiscally-sound business, which the district is required to do by the State.

Expanding the boundaries has a ripple effect which eventually hurts some school or even a different district's boundaries.

Yes, it is commendable what Colton has done. But times change, kids grow up, people move, budgets are slashed. The only constant is that ALL kids in the district still need a good education.

I believe these town hall meetings show just how thoughtful the district is in these tough times. They could just change the school configurations and not bother with public input. That's what you're seeing in Salinas, no?

You are right...all kids need a good education. But don't be so PC. Parents in all socio-economic brackets will move to another district or neighborhood to get their child in to a better school if that is their priority. We have allowed people who use the schools a daycare to bring down the entire district, and state for that matter. Children who do not speak English or cannot keep up with average students should be removed from the classroom and taught the language or brought up to grade level. Don't punish average and above students. This is one reason people are leaving the public school system. Don't punish a functioning school. It isn't broken. Don't try to fix it.

I understand the school districts challenge.

I am disappointed in the elimination of the Gate program from Monte Vista school a few years ago and would be very disappointed if they close the neighborhood school.

The district receives quite a bit of property tax money from the Monte Regio / Skyline areas. Eliminating the neighborhood school would be taking money from the area with little return.

I wonder if there are alternatives such as eliminating the adult school and allowing the community colleges to fill that void.
