Full story: Daily Breeze

Windmills off the East Coast could generate enough electricity to replace most, if not all, the coal-fired power plants in the United States, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Monday.

Just don't put any of them in the desert in California though. Gotta save the turtles, rabbits and bugs anyway.

Nuclear power will also replace many coal fired plants. The only difference is that the lights won't go out when the wind isn't blowing.

ALSO the lights do not go out when they shut down a Nuclear power plant for service. they all go into the same grid and when any one thing is down the others take up the slack...

Sounds good, let's pay 50% more for energy that's only 40% reliable. Makes sense to me.

If the wind stops blowing, we can always make Congress hold their sessions there. That should provide enough wind to last for centuries.

AC already has an On Shore Wind farm supplying enough power for 2000 homes has been running NON-STOP 100% reliable for 3 years now.. It always has enough wind.

Better check your math on that. According to their website, they have 7.5MW and produce 19M kWh per year. That's about 29% capacity factor.

Ah, don't get me wrong. I think wind power is a great idea. I just believe that we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket. We need a multi-pronged approach to our power needs. A little wind, a little solar, a little nuclear, a little hydroelectric and whatever works.

As a gesture of goodwill, Ted Kennedy should be the first to put a windmill on the Kennedy compound. Or maybe Streisand would put one on her Malibu estate. Think it will happen? Nah, they are both part of the liberal not in my neighborhood crowd. They want them planted in YOUR neighborhood. Salazar is a joke. Bet all those coal miners are going to love being out or work. Thanks Ken!

What stops the goverment from building the wind plants in the ocean and administer the power generation as part of the Homeland Security Department? This department can lower the cost and maintain the electric rate for the nation. As is we are held hostage to the power companies board of directors, making profit for the few staff members and share holders.

The flow of water works great too...Why not use that source more effectively...Its such a waste to see it all run out to the sea.

I'm here in coal country,,West Virginia. My dad and brothers were coal miners,,By the time I graduated the coal mines were down and I had to go to NC for work, but am now back in West Virginia. My question is this,,Why does Appalachian Power want to raise their rates 43%? Because the greedy coal operators are soaking THEM for unheard of coal prices,,It was going for almost $400.00 a ton,,AMAZING!! And since Appalachian Power is NOT going to cut into THEIR profits,, they are going to pass it on to their customers. So,, I don't know if coal power is going to continue to be the "cheap" power.

Check this link out for a perspective on what this wind power actually entails.
The figures are unbelievable, but true.

Human Farts are by far better then anything to run our country! With an endless supply of farts coming from all ages and demographics, the Methane gas produced if harnessed properly, could engine our country back into the greatness it once held!
Please encourage everyone not to fart until we have the technology to harness it!

Salazar is a bozo. It would take 20 years and about a trillion bucks to make all the windmills he forsees, not to mention an incredible amount of steel and aluminum. And offshore is a great place to put all this steel and aluminum so you cant keep track of how it rusts and oxidizes or repair it easily when they start crumbling. And no one worries about atlantic storms with high seas and even higher winds. Generally he might be right, but practically, when you get to the details, he has as much idea of what he is talking about as Big O.

There is NO way that coal can be replaced by an intermittant, variable, blows-when-it-wants, non-dispatchable power resources like WIND.

That's not even credible.

And the power losses and costs of the transmission lines are STAGGERING.

Don't forget a $1T of transmission lines .. although they'd just PRINT the money.

Europe has been using windmills with GREAT success for years in some of the worst seas on earth. guess they do not know what they are doing??
