Insider gossip from Allina is that they will put the scabs on for 5 days and force the nurses to take vacation or go without pay while the scabs work. Can that be done?

They don't care! Don't let them or the teacher union fool you for a minute. OK, they might care ... but it's about how little work they wish to do, that standards don't exist in their positions, their salaries are higher than anyone else, that they have through the roof pension / retirement plans ...

Many people care what a FILIPINO has to say. They are the few nurses that actually work in this country so the natural born citizens can be lazy!

Just because private sector workers refuse, or are unable to unionize, does not mean that public sector workers like nurses and teachers should be forced to lose thier rights at the bargaining table. Nurses need and deserve all the support they can get in this struggle against the hospital cadre of owners and investors who want more of the pie, and fewer rights for thier workers! Check out the salary and benefits of hospital administrators if you really want an eye full!

The facility I work at just expanded, and spent billions of dollars to put in flat-screen TVs in EVERY PRIVATE patient room. We achieved "magnet status," and have the best premature baby outcomes in the midwest. Oh, and our CEO makes a whopping $600+ dollars. AN HOUR. And the main caretakers? Those who cares for the patients 24 hours/day? Yup. nurses.
How many LOAs does your CEO get? My bet us that they put in more than 36 hours a week too. The point is nurses make damn good money ( not saying they don't deserve it) get a great health care plan and a good pension. Most people don't get this and in a time where workers in the private sector are losing their jobs there isn't much sympathy to go around. Everybody is taking a hit right now why should nurses be any different?

In a round about way, they're saying we care so much about our patients we're willing to walk off the job.

Really? Seriously? Do they expect us to fall for this?

More union greed. So much for Clara Barton. Funny, only the union a s s e s will be able to get proper medical care because of their cadillac health benefits! But the worst is still the public unions and worst of the worst is the teachers union. The public unions WILL be broken because of the simple fact that there literally is not enough money. The union dopes will have to be hit over a head with a 2X4 as usual because they're greedy and not real bright. Sad, but that's always the way. Just like the airline and automotive industries.

yes it can be done. It is called a lock out. If the lock out occurs, the nurses may be eligable for unemployment.(I think for a lock out of greater to or equal to 5 days)

Bravo for the courageous nurses. Keep standing tall.
The nurses are correct and caring about patient care as well as their very tough jobs.
Float and pool nurses cannot do the same job well enough to give good health care.
For the important critical and demanding work that they do the regular staff nurses deserve our thanks and support.
Hospitals are to care for the sick and not to make money for some administrator's glory.
What a great way to show that you are very concerned about understaffing than to remove all the nurses for a strike.

No, more will be coming in, Philippino nurses in particular are excellent, qualified AND friendly. Not to mention cute and much more likely to be weight/height proportionate. FYI to nurses union, get the big fat angry broads off the front lines, doesn't do anything for your cause.

Hahaha...did you know there will continually be a nursing shortage for an estimated 45+ years? Lay-offs? False. If we had enough nurses, they wouldn't be having us take on more patients.
I know about the "shortage", but I also know that real people have to deal with real numbers - if the money isn't there in the future, the shortage will only get larger. Believe me, if the unions keep pushing for more and more, the gap between how many nurses are employed and how many we apparently need will grow larger. It is simple economics - the hospitals are nonprofits, but they are not the government - they can't just print more money when they need it.

This isn't insider gossip - this is discussed on many of the articles related to these contract negotiations. The travelling nurses sign temporary contracts by the week - why would the hospitals pay the replacements a week's pay for one day, and then pay the returning nurses for four days... nah, let the striking nurses take an unpaid week to really think this over.

Unions are nearly obsolete in this country - there was a time that they were needed, but in their current form they have outlived their usefulness.

Once this is settled..and the nurses actually agree to a contract that give them raises, but table the staffing issue (thats what they really want)..how do you people go back and work for establishments and managment that you clearly hate so much??? How do you work with the non nursing and non union coworkers that you screwed and had to take pay cuts and lay offs so your bully union could "stick it to the employer". Theres no peacefull end to this..there will be hard feelings for years ..and the patients will be affected..but you'll settle when you get your raise, wont ya!! By the way..not everyone here who has an opinion that the nurses are selfish and the union is using bully tactics is a hosp. insider or manager..The arrogant nurses seem to think they are the only ones smart enough to express an opinion.. Im a nurse..non contract..I do make very good money and I love my job!! I work with great people..YES..my CEO makes more than me!! It doesnt affect the way I treat my patients on a day to day basis. Get over yourselves or go back to school and become the CEO!

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
