I'm not sure which "Richmond business owner" is the cause of the delay to the Lowe's home improvement store, but I can tell you that their refusal to sign the needed document has more to do with self interest than those of customers or tenants. I'm willing to bet that each of the two guys in question voted Republican. How can you profess the wonders of the free market system and then resist it the moment your interests are threatened? I wish they would just get out of the way of progress.

Hey - How about a petition to force the issue. Lowe's is desparately needed in this area since any employment is desparately needed. The community doesn't realize that the lack of employment lowers the real estate value and people move away. It may be that there are those who want the towns in this area to be strictly old age homes and hospitals - but who will be "taking care" of those people when all the doctors and nurses move away.

From what i'm seeing in the papers here the "Richmond business owner" is Gary Butters who coincidentally owns Arnot Building supply. I'm willing to bet he doesn't want the competition. We need Lowe's here, both for jobs and for the choice of a decent place to shop for what we need. Mr. Butter's has gotten rich enough off the community.

As I understand, Lowe's pulled back due to the economic crisis and cut in home building and renovation going on. So it's not going to happen for a while anyways.

Has anyone heard when they might bring lowes in?
I agree with everyone, Mansfield needs the company, with out it we will become a ghost town.
As it is if not for the University we would be already.
God help us if we loose Ward manufacturing, there will be nothing here, for anyone.

When Arnot Building Supply (owned by Gary Butters ) wanted to close a public street between there buildings, He Gary was all for it. of course that was a benefit to him and not to us as a community. Now we are haggling over a traffic light that will allow Lowes to come in and bring new jobs to the area. What do you think? Perhaps Greed?

Mr. Butters is the one holding up the approval on the light to be placed on Business 15 as he won't sign off on it, and it seems to be a personal issue with that descision from what I have seen and heard. its sad.

Well I think regardless of who is holding what up, as I understand Lowe's isn't coming anyways and if it did it would be a bust. There isn't the business around here to support the size of that store. Tioga county is only 40000 people.

You might need it for the jobs but I don't think sales wise this local area can support a big box store like that, especially with similar stores on tap in Williamsport and Corning. I think it would be a bust, especially in this economy.

Gary Butters yes made money from the community, but didn't his businesses hire local residents when there wasn't the big box stores? Bought from Mr. Butters when he owned Butters Homes and bought from the Arnot store he owns. Always found him fare, helpful and always held up his word on anything purchased from him.

You cant have Gary Butter involved... Anytime some who is in the same business you must recuse yourself.. This is clearly a conflict of interest
he wants to keep lowes out and should be called out on this issue.. We need the jobs and by the way Gary has laid off people... He had less than 15 people working for him lowes offers almost 150 jobs for the area gary hire. it will bring some money into the area lets not let someone who is interested in his own wallet control this town!

In this time of economic slow downs, Home Depot and Lowe's are laying off. I am not saying the area doesn't need jobs but I doubt if Lowe's or any other store of this type will build in the near future, If a store like Arnot has to lay off workers how would you expect a large box store to survive? As far as Mr. Butters (I am neither a relative or friend) is concerned getting rich, he served the community when others didn't, hired local residents, so to say he got rich enough off the community, thats his fault?
What the answer is I don't know, shopping in Corning, I still found Arnot competive in pricing and as I said the store always backed up what they sold. Who doesn't try to protect their own?

The bottom line is, Mr. Butters is the one holding up the building of Lowe's because of a traffic light issue. Kind of unfair of him, don't you think? I do believe this area could "carry" a Lowe's store. I know I certainly would shop there. Most people in this area look forward to new commerce and it certainly would be a welcome addition, both job-wise and as an alternate place to shop. It's nice to have decent choices without having to travel.

well all i know is we need jobs everywhere. and certainly in this area. competition is good for everyone. thats what helps to keep cost down and promote sales. most of the people around here travel to ny. to go to lowes. so pa money is being spent in ny. wouldnt it be better to help your own? and with the price of gas going up an down all the time, closer is always better. who knows mabie people who didnt come to this area befor will check out other stores in the area also!

Lowe's has already said they are not building a store in Mansfield, traffic light or not.

That's entirely untrue! I spoke to someone today who is very knowledgeable about this issue and the traffic light issue is/has finally been settled. There is another Penndot permit needed and then Lowe's will start building, in approximately three months if everything gets done in a timely fashion.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Gemini

It's a busy day and you've got quite enough to do without having to cope with people clamoring for your attention and likely to go into a huff if they don't get it. Is this person feeling neglected because you're busily occupied elsewhere or are there other reasons for their demanding mood? Simply giving them a big hug could make all the difference to their behavior.
