I don't like this idea for I live in Harper and don't want Wichita's trash around my home. Harper is a small town and we don't want all of Wichita's trash to destroy it. Wichita is nasty! Look at the streets...all trash. Maybe you should try to recycle shit!

As I see it, Harper sold the land to Waste Connections knowing what was going to become of it... If Wichita is too nasty for you, stop coming here. We don't mind if you stay in your little town. Nobody will notice you're not here. If Harper had the capacity to harness the population of Wichita, it would also have trash in the streets. To help our clutter in the streets. Next time you pass through Wichita try not to throw your cigarette wrappers and Old Milwaukee box out. Thanks...

Well, I guess Krissa, you should complain to whomever sold the land to Waste Connections. For those of you who do not live around Wichita, we do not have city trash service. Independent trash haulers are contracted by the cusotomers to arrange for trash pick-up. I've lived in many different places, and Wichita is the only place I've ever lived where the City does not operate the trash service.

Krissa,

I think that you have a skewed viewpoint of what a modern landfill is today. Most people, when they think landfill, think of huge piles of stinking garbage just dumped out of trucks and left rotting in the sun...and the smell carries for miles. A modern landfill for a city the size of Wichita will be nothing like this.

Landfills routinely truck in large amounts of dirt to layer over the garbage. This helps keep pests out, as well as block any smell. Years down the road, after the landfill has been filled to capacity, many landfills are turned into parks or golf courses.

I highly doubt the landfill is in downtown Harper. The landfill provides jobs for Harper's citizens, as well as brings in revenue for the city/county that could help pay for better city services/wages in Harper.

There are always two sides to things. Don't knee jerk so fast that you miss them.

Krissa, maybe you should take a look around your home again. please tell us how to "recycle s____"! Bring yourself and do a clean up of Wichita. Do you mind bringing your trash to Wichita? Where does yours go now. Maybe the people with other landfields did not want it either. Maybe some of in Wichita do not smelling the "S____" all the time either. But it is life. Grow up and get a real life.

Harper county comissioners took a vote and decided to sell the land knowing that it would become a landfill site. It has brought Harper county large amounts of money and residents should be grateful. How it is spent is up to its residents. I feel sorry for the MBI truck drivers because people shoot them the bird and even try to run them off the road for hauling Wichita's trash into the new landfill (which is located several miles northeast of the actual town of Harper). All the drivers are doing is earning a living to support their families. The old landfill was located near Chaparral High School between the towns of Anthony and Harper. The new location is much better and remember, Harper counties trash goes there too. Even though the article says no more trash is being hauled to Oklahoma I believe they are still hauling what they call "fluff" which is basically car interior parts to a place near Meno, OK. By the way Krissa, I think I know your family and saw Mark this weekend.

The landfill is north of the city of Harper 7 or 8 miles give or take a mile. It is also north of a local river way that goes to Oklahoma. I think most of the people of the area are concerned with what may happen in the future when it comes to WC's landfill. Should a leak begin (and it certainly could happen)it could contaminate the water in that area.
As for the commissioners vote... they didn't consult the citizens of Harper county before they voted. Here in lies the problem. You elect someone expecting them to do the best for you and then they shaft you. This causes hard feelings but most of the people of Harper County are survivers and have gotten on with their lives.
As for all that money???? The commissioners are so busy racking up bills for surveys on how to spend it we may never see any of it.

As a WC customer and Wichita resident, I understand the concern. If the city or independent trash haulers gave incentive to recycle it would be easier. Right now I pay about $75.00 every 3 months and I'm a single person... I don't need to pay that much to dump a small kitchen trash can and barely fill a WC container ever 2 weeks. I hope the "Pay as you Throw" law gets passed and Harper County will lose money as Wichita residents save money. How do you like those apples?!
