Richie Farmer's applying for unemployment benefits makes a mockery of the system that so many need to provide for their families while struggling to find work!

Politicians, although technically qualified for benefits are something else, my goodness, do they have no shame.

FRANKFORT, Ky.(AP)- Former Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has asked for unemployment benefits.

The Courier-Journal reports that the state agriculture department confirmed it had records pertaining to Farmer's unemployment application but could not release them. Holly VonLuehrte, the agency's general counsel, says state law requires the records to remain confidential.

The newspaper submitted a request under the state's Open Records Act for his application. Farmer served as commissioner for eight years, making a yearly salary of more than $110,000 when his term ended. He left office Jan. 1.

Elected public officials are not eligible for unemployment benefits under state unemployment compensation law. If the claim were approved, he could have received $415 a week.

State officials say they couldn't remember the last time an elected state official asked for unemployment benefits.

He was a pretty good thing. He showed the world that a boy from clay county can get up out of this hole if they work hard, get an education and put some heart into it. The man has done very well for himself any way you look at it at least to the tune of over 80,000 a year for the last 8 years. Thats somewhere around 700,000 dollars he made in those 8 years. Who else from clay county makes that kind of money. Not many, Some underground miners do, a few others. Richie done well. Now he needs pocket money. His well hath ran dry. for the time being.

Richie got elected to that office because he was a ballplayer, not because he was smart man and knew what he was doing.

Takes 5 players to make a team, not just one! And sports is one thing, being corrupt and embarassing to our community is another. Nobody is perfect, but geesh, the guy had it made, was basketball royalty in KY and wasted his opportunity ruined his reputation.

I agree, nothing sucks like a big orange. But I bleed blue and was black and gold when your were picking up rat turds for lunch. Maybe he is a crook, but 95% of the people in Clay co. would do the same thing he did if they got half a chanse. If he were still shooting a ball for Clay co. no body would give a rats ass what he did. And by the way I THINK YOUR THE IDIOT for staying in that hell hole.

Well, I guess you get used to having a lot of money, it's hard to just give it up so easy. Gee whiz, give the guy a break. He's not done no worse than a lot of other people in CC.

No breaks allowed for corrupt politicians, period! The clique has lost much power in recent years and the people have found their voice in the most recent set of elections and will continue to hold all elected officials accountable whether it be city council, fiscal court, mayor, county exec, board of ed, state rep, state sen.

I encourage everyone to attend their meetings as often as possible and take someone with you!!
