teri cornelius oregon wrote: try petco. also i feel that to many people put to much stock on shelters. number one the shelters here don't have small animals other then rabbits. and the reason pets are being put in the shelters is because people are loosing their homes and most apartments wont accept dogs or cats anymore and people have no choice but to give up their pets. if you want to lesson the appearance of animals in shelters then start demanding apartments and other for rental properties to accept pets. my daughter has and i have bought all of our small animals from petsmart and petco ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, rats, mice, gerbils ect. and we have had no problems in fact most of our pets end up living months or years past there life span. our stores educate their people very well on the care of their animals. don't pre-judge all pet stores because a few are being irresponsible. the message on top is for everyone in this forum So you think the reason that shelters are overloaded just happened within the last year or 2? Shelters have been overcrowded for decades. People breed dogs for profit, the dogs are less than socialized, the new owners can't handle them so off they go to the shelter. The dog runs away. The owner doesn't care. Bingo! Shelter dog! Pit bulls are confiscated- noone wants the puppies. You got it- shelter story #4124. A puppy mill raided, over 700 dogs are pulled. Where do you think they go? This started because of people's greed, not a housing or economic crisis.

Andrea wrote: Yes. I don't think Petsmart really has the resources to take care of the animals they sell properly. Plus, it encourages people to buy these hamsters, birds and the like as impulse buys. These types of animals need special care and Petsmart staff don't have the know how to give people advice about them. I think they should leave the selling of animals to breeders and specialty stores. i agree

We have several hamsters and fish that my daughter's friends bought and then decided they didn't want after awhile. In part I blame the parents. Don't jump every time the kids say they want something. Get them some books and have them read on how to take care of the animals they want before they get them, and then wait a bit to make sure they are still interested a month or so after they first ask for the pet. Again, a lot of this is the parents fault.

I dont agree about petsmart's closing. My two little sisters each have a guinea pig (caramel and fudge) and they are both perfectly healthy!! I am even thinking about getting a chinchilla!! But this just might be that the petsmart i go to is nice!!! I might actually get my chinchilla (if they sell them) at monster pets. I can trust that store because my friends dad owns it!!!:))

It's a gross generalization to say that Petsmart staff are transient college age students who don't know about caring for animals!!!. It's not even an accurate generalization. Many of the adult workers are there for YEARS and own one or more of their own pets with knowledge from personal experience and from training by coworkers. Usually, there is one or more employees who "specialize" in fish or small pets, or dogs, etc. So find that person or the manager.
I live near Boston and maybe the scarcity of jobs or slightly higher pay is the reason that these petstore jobs near larger cities are not cheesy pocket money jobs for high school or college age people.

I went to PetSmart today to get catfood. I always look at the animals before I leave. I noticed a male Chinchilla in his plastic house lying on his side. I got on the floor to look into the house; as his tail was sticking out and he didn't appear to be moving. I could not tell if he was sleeping or dead. I asked an employee to check on him. She went into the enclosed area...lifted his house a few inches and quickly placed it back down. When she came out of the enclosure, she did not even make eye contact with me. She went about her business waiting on customers. I knew then that he was dead. I wanted to make sure, so I waited in the store for about 20 minutes (looking at the adoption cats) until I saw the same girl go into the enclosure and wrap the Chinchilla up in paper towel.
Hope this answers your question.

Hello people! The shelters are LOADED with animals looking for a home! Check the sites for your local shelters and get a clue about what you'll see. Dozens and dozens of pitt bulls and labs, and "doodles" and retrievers. All FAD dogs who are no longer wanted because dopey people suddenly found out that the big dog they just got needs A LOT of excercise, and food. They need regular vet checks and care. All of a sudden the dopes realize their trophy dog to show off in the hood is a burden. Go to the shelters and adopt! Screw the pet stores. The support the mills!! We rented a beach cottage once and the owners didn't tell us their dopey daughter would be bunking upstairs. She had a huge dog cooped up in her little sun porch while she was gone at least 12 hours a day. That dog howled all day every day and kept tearing down the curtains. Dopey would come home and walk her dog for about ten minutes and that was it for him. Don't get a pet if you can't (won't) take care of them!

As ill run and as low as I find the standards of most places in Miami-dade I have to say the Pet smarts I have been to here are clean and the animals are more than well cared for.
I have no problem at all with Pet smart here . They are very good.

we should only own cats and dogs .they are domestic all others are forced to a life in a cage or to be clipped so they dont fly away. do u want to live in a cage and have your legs cut off. maybe you should be forced to jail inside your house the rest of youre life. and go to a shelter. i adopted 2 cats and a dog.stop making money off these poor animals its immoral . but again who runs these chains, corporate wealthy business asses. they dont care its a business. and others are uneducated jerks. greed a sin ,and shall not kill a sin thats what these greedy jerks are doing .they wiil go to church on sunday after counting their money.
