I have a 21 year old son who is now in The Great Onyx Job Corp program. He is almost done with his welding class, and is planning to go for advanced training when he is done. He had always worked but when the economy went south he was not able to find a job, so he decided to give the Job Corp a go. It has been a blessing, he has grown-up so much, now he will have a trade, or trades to help him with his future. He is a Bay Leader and Tops in everything there. They do not tolerate with to much crap, they can't, when they have 150 guys 16-24 in age. They also give them counsiling and AA counsiling if needed. They are kind of like the military they try to teach them to be men, and men that we can be proud of.

I went to G.O. from 2006 to 2007. It was somewhat good at first, but then the staff got real strict because of how bad some of the students were behaving.

I am very informed with the Job Corps program and have worked at several (not Great Onyx). The reason that the center is accepting students at a high rate at this time is due to a transition from a Park Service center to a Forest Service center and a restructuring of operational procedures.
I completely agree that staff need to be out and involved with the students in the residential area in order to make the most out of social skills. Make no mistake about it, there are some students who are on their last chance for whatever reason, but these are the exception and most students are just lacking some direction and a little discipline to help get them focused so please don't think that this a boot camp for delinquents as it is far from it. 80% or closure? This simply is not the case. Centers are granted budgets based on percentage of students on center, but this does not affect staff interaction with students. The focus is on learning a trade, getting your education, and improving social skills. You will generally find that "contract" centers are better maintained as they are run by private contractors, but also usually hold an enormous amount of students on center. "Government" centers are smaller and more productive in terms on personal interaction and services provided. Please feel free to address any questions or concerns in this forum and I will do my best to answer them. |
