This was passed on to me by someone campaigning for Glidewell so I took it. I didn't really get a chance to read it till I got home later that night. I was truly impressed and believe everyone that is voting in the upcoming election should hear this so pass it on.

I have been a member of the Republican Party most of my adult life. But I do belong to the party nor do I owe it blind allegiance. I am troubled by the direction of the party and frankly appalled by the actions that some in Washington, Tallahassee, and even locally have taken in its name.

I firmly believe in the ideals of limited government espoused by Reagan and Goldwater and fervently defend the notion of fairness and freedom for all advocated by Lincoln. Personal liberty as enacted by our Founding Fathers should remain as our enduring goal. The rule of law and the constitution should be our guiding lights.

But I look around and see a Governor and legislature that claim the mantle of Republican pass a law that allows bureaucrats in Tallahassee to have more say over how our teachers are paid and even how they are evaluated then our elected local school board. How can you say you are for limited government and government closest to the people and vote for this? How can you vote for a law that allows Tallahassee bureaucrats more say in whether our children are promoted from one grade to the next than our local teachers, administrators, and superintendent? Is this what passes for government by the people?

How can you say you are for fundamental fairness for all and then vote to enact a de facto 3% income tax on every state and local worker? Can you say that you are for government closest to those governed when you vote for Tallahassee to dictate to the local governments how muck their employee's retirement contribution must be contributed by those employees? Is spending so out of control and our political will to make hard choices so weak we must balance our budget by taking money from our loyal employees who have not had a meaningful raise in years? Ans how can we look those long-term employees in the face when we turn around and give high ranking bureaucrats and political cronies large pay increases at the same time?

How can you say you are for the rule of law when you govern through back room meetings and subvert transparency in government that is codified in the Florida Sunshine Law? How can you favor expediting the goals and projects of those who donate thousands to you campaigns and allow honest everyday citizens to be neglected and their trampled? How can you vote to pass a law to drug test every state employee, EXCEPT yourself and governor and cabinet?

These are but some of the myriad ways that we Republicans have lost our way. That we have traveled this path is a disaster for our country, our state, and our county. The democrat party was swallowed long ago by special interest and is unable to even identify a path back to their former principles. Third party efforts are doomed by tradition and legal barriers. The Republican party remains the last best hope of restoring our country to its founding principles and goals.

But we must act now to correct our party. As others have said, the time for sitting back and saying nothing is over. We must elect officials who will vote their conscience and vote based on principle rather than have their votes dictated by power brokers and party fat cats. we must commit to act and encourage our party to return to its principles before er lose our countries, our state, and counties.

Thank you for sharing this!!! Because of this Danny Glidewell will be getting my vote. As a teacher myself I have witnessed how off course education has gotten due to government mandates. I want a stop to it. Return the schools back to the locals! Allow us to have input with our local elected officials because we know what works and what doesnt not Tallahassee. Glidewell win this seat and do justice for education!

I am against using any test to determine a teacher's pay or their job performance evaluation. I also think the constant emphasis on FCAT harms our children and hampers the education process. Finally the money that is spent on preparing and grading these tests is obscene when many of our schools are falling apart and most are still in the 20th century as far as technology goes.

Achievement tests are one thing but we have gone too far.

Will YOU measure progress without these tests? How will teachers be treated fairly if they're not in the good ol boy system? Please share your thoughts with us.

No system is perfect, but the current system is hard for anyone to understand. The current formula for evaluating teachers is:
L Q
yti=XiB+{ yt-r,iYt-r+[ ZqiOq+ei
r=1 q=1

Some of the symbols are not exactly right because my computer does not have the correct symbols, but you get the picture. Can any parent reasonably calculate how their child's teacher is evaluated? Can the teacher? I am open to suggestions about what is the best way, but I know the current process is not the way to go.

I would like to invite you to start coming to Marianna on Thursday evenings. Every week during the summer, we have concerts in the park.

This would be a great way to get your name and face out there for the public to see. There are MANY people who still don't know you are running against Coley.

You have got to get your name out there!!!!!

Principals will have to get off their asses and start getting into classrooms. You cannot fairly evaluate a teacher on test scores.

Let me give you a couple of reasons why you can't fairly evaluate a teacher based on scores:

1. Just this year, on the morning of FCAT, I had to delay testing so I could call DCF on a child with bruises of handprints all over her and who was in pain. This child was still required to test that day. Do you think this kid's performance on that day truly reflected her ability? Do you think this child's mind was on the FCAT that day?

2. It doesn't matter how hard you teach; some kids just dont give a rip and will half-ass read the questions and not try to do their best. How can you say a teacher did or did not teach the material based on that kid's results?

3. Not all teachers teach FCAT subjects. How is it fair to say you are equally evaluating teachers using test results when it's not a level playing field to begin with? You have people like Culinary, ag, Spanish, etc. being evaluated based on their kids growth, and 9th grade teachers being evaluated on FCAT results. I can promise you ag or culinary students perform better because a) they enjoy those elective courses and b) it's way easier to read a recipe or make a tractor crank up than it is to do an algebra test!

Thank you, I plan to be at the concerts beginning this week. I agree that meeting people is the most important thing a candidate can do. I have already learned so much about issues that concern citizens, particularly in the other counties besides Walton. Every day is I learn something new and some way that people in the district can be helped.
