How is it that when I went to vote for the education bond, there were no ballots in English? I was handed a Spanish ballot with a seperate paper supposingly translating the ballot. How do I really know what I was voting for if I cannot read the ballot? Sounds very "third world" to me. What are we doing?!

What this city needs are the "red light" cameras at major intersections. I have lived in cities where these cameras are used and it really helps with the problem of running red lights. In fact, people stop when the light turns yellow as opposed to flooring the gas pedal. I think it is an overall plus for the community. The city will make a ton of money off violators and we as a community will be a little safer. BTH

To the person that stated schools are built for teachers not students. Let's get this straight schools do not fail students. Students fail the schools. Students get exactly what they put into their education. todays society is full of lazy deadbeats. It starts when they are young because our schools give kids everything. Free breakfast, lunch, counseling, soc ial workers, psychologists, medical etc. Now kids want grades handed to them. Stop blaming the schools and teachers start looking in the mirror as a parent and a student.

To Tony M. AMEN!! As a teacher in a New Mexico Middle School I am seeing so much apathy on the part of the parent that it is scary! Kids are not held accountable for anything and when reprimanded for blatant insubordination in class,,the teacher is the one to blame. It gets harder and harder every year!

No official peperwork should be printed in Mexican. If you cannot read English, you cannot vote. It really is that easy.

To the person who wants to nationalize oil.
Exxon profits 2007 40.9 billion, income taxes paid 30 billion. This is income taxes, not to include property taxes, state and local taxes. this doesn't include any of the production taxes that also are paid.
If we nationalized oil, presumably to decrease its costs, where would the money that pays for so much of our government overspending come from?
We import about 65% of our oil, Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venzuela and Nigeria are our top suppliers.

Our schools have a 30% drop out rate. They are incapable of making their annual yearly progress.
As long as we allow them to continue to blame everyone else for their failures, they will never change.

Well I drive a beautiful Geo, runs well for being 12 years old, I can still fill up for 20 bucks and better yet it is paid for. Have never had any major problems with it, I maintain the car as it should be, oild changes, tune up, you know Preventive Maintenance. So who ever thinks they are ugly junkers are probably sorry they bought the HUGE SUV and have to justify their idiocy somehow. You would never catch me in an SUV or a truck even if gas was not over 3 bucks a gallon. What a waste of gas!!

Yah, driving a geo metro (i.e. rollerskate of death) around El Paso is a real smart move there sparky. I would much rather drive around that place in an SUV or large truck, even a large car, than some gas saving death-trap. The survival rate is much better if you have more mass. You will never see me purchasing such a small vehicle, I don't care how high gas prices go.

As long as we allow them to continue to blame everyone else for their failures, they will never change. You obviously have no idea of the goals that need to be met in order to meet AYP. You also have not been inside a classroom since your schooldays, from the sound of things. Do you have children in school? If so, do they receive any type of services that the general population does not receive? Here is what the real deal is. In order to make AYP, the school has to have a certain number of the students proficient in English and Math. The student body is broken down into gender, ethnic, socio-economic, SpEd, and ELL categories. Each group has to make AYP in order for the school to make it. There are 8th graders who read at a 2nd grade level and receive SpEd services to help them become proficient. Until then, they bring down the scores. Same with the ELL students and at times the low socio-economic students. Each year, the percentage of proficiency increases over the last years' expected proficiency. So, let's say the this year, 20% of students need to be reading at grade level and 30% need to be at grade level in math. However, for school X, the SpEd students are only 15% proficient in math and the ELL students are only 18% proficient in reading. Then, school X fails. The entire school. But, next year, that same school is expected to have 40% proficiency in reading and 65% proficiency in math. So, school X has to make up for lost ground this year and increase beyond that next year. By the year 2014, each and every student is expected to be at 100% proficiency in reading and math. Keep in mind, that includes all students receiving special education services, all english language learners, all low income, all illegal immigrant, all rich kids, all gangsters, all the students who are doing drugs, pregnant, homeless, each and every student. So, before you blame the schools, take at look at what the schools get sent to work with. Then take a look at how much teachers get paid, how much they have to spend out of their own pockets to provide classroom supplies, and how much they are expected to do in only 7 hours a day. Plus, they are expected to not only teach kids to read and write and do math, they also have to teach morals, work ethic, responsibility, manners, etc. to the students. Then ask yourself, where are the parents of the kids who are failing? Are they active in the school? Do they volunteer at school? Do they actually check their kids planners and backpacks? Or are they just telling the schools, "Here is the fruit of my loins; you raise him. Give him back when he is finished so I can show him off like I did when he was my cute little baby. Oh, yeah. Make sure he is ready for the world before you give him back, too." When you have done all of that, and seen it with your own eyes, then you can decide who is at fault.

my prayers go out officer Saenz and his family, I saw an accident at alemeda and amador,I saw three fire trucks, one ambulance, and three police cars, way before officer Saenz was injured,or was anywhere close, I am no expert but It seemed It was under control. What I don't understand is why officer Saenz was with his emergency lights blaring and proceeding rather fast to this accident that was under control Am I missing something here?

Getreal, you say you are a substitute teacher. In what district? Where do you sub the most? The middle school I work at has a hard time finding good subs. But, since you are a district employee, then you should have some idea of the workings of that district. For example, if you sub in the LCPS district, you know how messed up our support is. I am talking tech support, funding, ancillary staff, supplies, subs, training, etc. You also should have some idea of the type of students that our district services. Knowing that we get little to no support from the big money makers downtown should anger you. It should anger everyone. Add to that the fact that we are supposed to take children whose parents don't care, or who may not have a place to live or food to eat, or who may not speak any english, and provide them with a quality education with results that prove they have learned. We also have to turn them into responsible hardworking citizens, ready for college or the work force. Knowing all we are expected to do, and knowing how little support we get from the district, the parents, and the students, you still think it is the schools fault? If so, maybe you should stop subbing and become a teacher. There is a big difference between subbing every now and then and working in the trenches nine months out of the year.
