Usually, when the cliche, "honest, hardworking folk who've fallen on hard times" need "temporary" help, they can't get it.

Honest, hardworking people tend to have assets that set them out of range for qualification: a house worth X, a vehicle worth Y, so on and so forth.

It doesn't matter if the poor schmuck got laid off from his job by no fault of his own, and is practically knocking on doors to find work. It doesn't matter if he's at the unemployment office every day willing to do anything at all to support himself. It doesn't matter if he needs help for one month just to pay the bills!

It doesn't matter because he has assets and no program out there is designed to help people KEEP their cars, houses, credit scores intact, etc.

These programs are not designed to assist people temporarily, though the ones responsible for them like to pretend they are.

You quite literally have to have nothing to get something. And its as if the Great and Powerful Oz waved a magic wand...all is provided.

I lived in another state before my daughter was born, and people used to ask me all the time WHEN I was going to apply for WIC - not IF, but WHEN.

As if applying for WIC were just something you "do," like making a baby registry!

I knew I didn't qualify, and I didn't need the help anyway because my baby was planned to the financial T! But I looked at my state's qualifications anyway to see what it took to get the aid...

...and honestly, anyone living under those circumstances has absolutely no right having children at the moment. I'll give some leeway to accidents, layoffs, etc., but if you're not currently pregnant and living like that - don't have a baby. End of story. I don't care how badly you WANT one.

See, the thing is when we're paying the bills, we have the right to voice our concerns when these programs are abused.

Unfortunately, the programs are literally designed for abuse. Nobody tells you that you can't have more children. Nobody tells you you can't buy steak, crab legs, brand name, cookies, chips, soda pop, ice cream, etc., on food stamps. Nobody says you can't get cash back on your EBT to spend as you please.

One thing they will say, though, is that you must work less than X-number of hours a week to maintain benefits, or make a certain amount of money - and that's not motivating anyone to really pick themselves up.

It only motivates them to stay where they are. And there are lots of people out there content to work only 20 hours a week, or not at all, because its easier to have the government provide everything that takes a genuine hardworker to provide.

Maybe you can help me out with this. See, I'm one of these "financially responsible" people...and mobile phones are the last thing I spend money on.

How much does an iPhone really cost? I know they are hundreds of dollars off the bat, but let's assume those on the government dole get the one that costs a penny with the upgrade....

Ok, so the cheapest cellular service, regardless of phone, is what?$30, give or take?

But its an iPhone - you have to have a data plan for that. What's that, an extra $25?

Probably has texting too...$10 for unlimited?

Every now and again, you gotta buy an app for $2.99!

And ringtones!

So what are we talking here?$60?$70 a month just to have an iPhone? Everybody has a cell phone for "emergencies" you know...but you don't exactly see many people going for the freebie with the upgrade. You know, the phone that just takes and receives calls? No data and no texting. The whole reason you got a phone in the first place?

But when you consider no one, with the exception of perhaps doctors, lawyers, pilots, etc., need to be on-call 24/7, there really isn't any reason anyone *needs* a phone. Those who absolutely do *need* it, usually will have one provided by their company. If not, they're likely making enough money they don't need assistance anyway.

But $70 a month can buy a lot of groceries. It can pay several gas bills in the summer. Electric in the winter. Car insurance. Probably water too!

$70 can go a long way! You can't pay them all, but you can at least get one bill out of that!

Thanks! But let me get one thing out of the way before all the excuses start:

But...but...I NEED a cell phone because:

1) My kids need to reach me if there is an emergency!
- Well, during the day, you're supposed to be AT WORK! Why can't the kids/school/daycare/babysitter call your work in the event of an emergency? So maybe you work third shift? Okay, well then you're butt is supposed to be AT HOME! Landlines are cheaper than cells.

2) What if I'm broken down on the side of the road?!
- HA! Where in the heck are you going? Hopefully, to WORK. If you're on the government dole and not working, I think its safe to say you have no business taking road trips in the first place.

3) I need to use the snazzy browser to look for jobs!
- Computer use at the library is free! Yippee!

4) I need to have something in my pocket to be able to tell the time!
- Use a watch!(I swear, I have heard this before!)

5) My mother/father/spouse/SO/PO/emp loyer/cat/dog WANTS me to have a phone!
- Make them pay the bill! Voila!

It's wonderful that your one of those moms who does work, but you sound a little silly saying you get food stamps but wouldn't bother with WIC. Plus you have an expensive phone, my question is why are you getting food stamps then? I mean if your well enough off to make fun of someone in an apartment or trailer, you wouldn't bother with haggling to get WIC, and you have a cell phone, then your far too good for food stamps right? Furthermore, I have a family of four in my house, 2 of those my children, and only my husband works, which is the way it should be, and we don't get assistance in any kind of shape or form. Yet, there's people out there having kids left and right, just to get more assistance, sittin on their bum a**, sellin half or more of their stamps to score drugs, and they deserve to get money from my husband's hard labor check. Hell naw that sh** isn't right, and by the way I spent 6 years of my childhood living in a trailer, and I'm damn proud of my hard working father who started at the bottom and worked his way up. In no way shape or form are we trash, damn proud to come from a trailer park as a matter of fact, cause my dad worked damn hard to get the best for his family, and we never got a damn dime of government money. The sweat off my daddy's back raised me with no government assistance, and still doin it today at 56 years of age. But the government sure takes his fu**in money every year, I've seen this man pay 4 and 5 thousand dollars in on government taxes each year, so people who's able to work just as he has all his life can sit on their dead lazy ass and get his money for doin nothing at all. Trailer Trash indeed, check your mouth and your mind, cause you sound ignorant with both!

Why should I be grateful for what I have when I provided it myself? Not to be argumentative, but the reason I have a house with a white picket fence is because I made something of myself. It all didn't just fall out of the sky! I didn't just get "lucky." I have myself to thank!

2009 was *bad.* I don't know anyone who wasn't affected at the time, myself included! And it was HARD! But gosh darn it, it was three years ago! How long can you use "times are hard" as an excuse?

When EVER has anyone ever said, "Gosh, we have a great economy right now!" haha! Never! People like to reminisce about the 90s and pretend they were pretty good - but remember, at the time, everyone was complaining and moaning about the state of the economy back then, too!

Of course, that doesn't mean that there haven't ever been tough economic times! But seriously, look at the state of us as a whole...

People line up to get the newest Apple product. Black Friday doorbusters - people buying things they don't *need*, televisions, DVD players, Playstation 3s.

I already mentioned how expensive it is to have an iPhone monthly. It doesn't have to be an iPhone - MOST cell phones nowadays require extra data plans! That's $25 extra dollars that the average American just had lying around! Nobody *needs* a cell phone!

Nearly everyone has a Netflix account! Is that needful?

JC Penny can't do well in the mall...virtually no store can last in the mall. But a NAIL SALON?!?! Something as "needful" as that...appointments needed! LOL

When was the last time you heard that a tanning salon went out of business here? Looks to me like there's one on every corner!

When you really sit and think about it, we poor "impoverished" Americans sure do spend a lot of money on needless crap.

I do as well as I do because I simply DON'T waste money on such garbage - except Netflix. I gotta love the instant streaming! haha!

It's extremely wrong that most people getting assistance are nothing but lazy a** drugies who have 5 or 6 children that they don't give two sh**s about. Let's be smart here and blame the right people, uh the government that's who. I mean those bast**ds make money hand over fist, but minimum wage is 7 something an hour. A family of 4 with only one working in the household can't get food stamps, but a lazy a** drugie with 2 kids can get 600 in stamps, a house paid for, a phone paid for, medical paid for, and all they do is sit on their tail and do nothing. I would think the government would want to help those who are trying to help themselves, not the ones who do nothing to better their situation. F**k the government and everything they stand for. Our economy is screwed up right now, I can't imagine why, how about we cut their pay down to 7 dollars an hour. How about we don't pay a president until the day he dies for doing nothing. Or how about the working man getting millons for doing hard labor, and these rock stars and movie stars making 7 an hour for doing what they claim they love. Eat the Rich and slap a government bi**h. F**k the government!
Very interesting and truthful post.

Well first off times are bad however when they where good there was still lazy people using the system. Always will be if we continue to let.them.

Supposely now to get ktap you have to work or volunteer 20 hours to receive it and I think this is great but they shld work 40 nobody will ever be able to live on 20 hours. My thought if they only work part+time your other 20 hrs will be spent cleaning up our city/county/state bet they will realize they wld.rather work and get paid.

Now I know what abt their kids well that's a tough one, but what shld happen are families need to pick up the damn slack. If God forbid a child of mine got knocked up I sure the hell wldnt let the government take care of them.

Now the deadbeat first if you hadn't laid with a dead beat u wldnt have had this problem, however if they ain't gonna work then they can watch the kids, make them pay, easier said then.done I know but jail don't work we need other options. I know.this sounds bad but I think women needs forced BC if they are on assistance and maybe if we tell the men either pay or snip snip that might get their attention.

Now I am gonna crawl off my soap box after I long day of.work I have laundry to do.

If you keep.reading it said I then made him pay. I was married for 10 yrs and yes he turned into deadbeat however before I got support the government didn't help my family did because I took responsibility for my children and I had great family support. When I had my kids I was able to support them a divorce was not part of my plan. However if your single and unemployed and sleeping with an unemployed person you shld be responsible enough not to have a child let alone 3 or 4

We're not here talking about people who lost their jobs from no fault of their own, and yet at least ATTEMPT to put their big boy and girl panties on and do what needs to be done.

For instance, if you lost your job yesterday, I don't expect you to have another yet. If it were last month, I expect you to be going to interviews at least, but I won't fault you if you haven't found something yet.

But six months, eight months, twelve months...the excuses have got to stop. If all else fails, mow lawns, flip burgers, be a cashier. Its not the greatest money and the benefits suck! But its *something* and those places ARE hiring now.

You've seen Vacation, I'm sure. Remember how Cousin Eddie wouldn't get a job because he's "holding out for a management position?"

I think of him every time I hear someone say, "Well, I don't want to work anywhere where I don't get paid the same or higher than my last job!"

Beggars can't be choosers. I mean, sure! We'd all love to make the same or more as our last job...but when you're hurtin', you take what you can get!
