What in the hell is going on? Yesterday on CNN they were talking about how Patriot was going to shut down every mines and try to turn them non union and when CNN asked them for comment they issued a release saying that no they weren't and the rumors were "unfounded". BULLSHiT!! My hubby works at Lick Branch (part of big mountain #16) and as soon as he goes to work this morning guess what?, Yep, they "idled" his mines and the rest of their mines will be "idled" by tomorrow!! Then after the 60 day "idle" they will "officially" close every single mine they own. What the fuck is going on?

This has nothing to do with union versus non union The price of coal is below the price to mine it. The only conspiracy going on here is in the white house. Time for an election asap !!! Wake up ppl this will last for years !!! Read the paper instead of FB and you might learn something. In fact read the NEWS articles on Topix not the gossip posts. Tomorrow you will also hear the same news coming from non union mines as well so the union thing is false. Its strictly based on the economic state we are in. This country is financially and morally bankrupt.

This country is financially and morally bankrupt. The president has no bearing on the current price of coal. If you want to look at someone to blame, look towards the mine owners. The price if coal has dropped (partly because like every other time the coal industry booms, it is destined to bust). We mined more coal then we could use at once. So the supply out stretched the demand, thus the price naturally fell to match. So all the mine owners shut down their mines and basically refuse to sell any of their coal till people are willing to pay more for it. The owners won't open the mines back up till the price is right for them. Because to them, the coal they already have stock piled isn't going any where. It is like owning stock in a company that you know will make a recovery no matter what. When the price drops you hold onto it until you can make money on it. The only difference is this puts workers out of work and families in troubled times.

Do you realize how much money is stolen from the working man by the EPA and MSHA ? You need to take your blinders off. We are being robbed that's what happened to the price of coal. There is not more than can be used , it is just being produced much cheaper overseas where the thieves don't get their cut first.

You do realize that the president doesn't have any part in either msha or the EPA. These authorities set standards for the safety of both industry workers and the environment that the industry has an impact on. Human life is worth more than any amount of money. And these standards help save human life. If you want to see someone get robbed, then remove the standards set by the EPA and msha. Then you will see miners and their families robbed of life due to the complete disregard of life that would soon follow.

Have any of you looked out your trailer park windows lately? See the ground? There's no snow on the ground, and hasn't been all winter for most of the Continental US. That's the reason for all the layoff's and all the idle mines. There's too much coal in the stockyards and it's not needed at the moment anywhere. When there isn't a demand, miners get cut. That's how it goes.

The demand decrease so the price decreased! Stupid!

Obama has no say in the EPA, he just gets to appoint who's in charge of it! You are all ignorant like Helen Keller!

This is why a COLLEGE EDUCATION is so important in today's society!!! For all those younger coal miners who have girlfriends/wives and got layed off, better be waiting for divorce papers or for that text saying "I don't want to be with you anymore"...
