I applaud these initiatives to do good with the monies that are being made available, whether they're faith-based initiatives or other good works. Churches and charities are seeing contributions diminish as more donors are pressed by the deflated economy. Honestly, our family feels very fortunate that we're able to divert our 'windfall' to savings, at least at present.

there is alot of "liberation theology" going on right now.

Perhaps you people need to sit back and decide if your "faith" actually requires or warrants socialism.

Most faiths originally did require quite a bit of socialism, until about 30 years ago, a right wing political movement began to promote selfish plutocracy as a component of traditional religious values.

This cynical ploy succeeded in an alliance of big business, churchgoers, and anti-rights activists. The first group got the voting power to control government, and the two latter groups got mostly empty promises.

A better question would be: "Is this plea from my church just another cynical and greedy bid for a piece of the pie?"

Jesus must have been a socialist, robert. In the Christian Bible, Jesus mentions the poor repeatedly, and the responsibility his followers have toward them. Sometimes I wonder if today's government leaders who claim to be Christians ever noticed those parts of scripture.

Socialism is a form of government. It is not a religious faith. People of faith live under all sorts of governments. No faith that I know of advocates NOT helping the poor and less fortunate, though many governments sure have.
