Joliet, Crest Hill mayors to meet with bishop on diocese move
#1 Jul 5, 2012
Dear Mayor Soliman,
Please stop wasting your time with the Diocese. You are embarrassing yourself and our city.
You can better serve Crest Hill with renewed vigor developing the Menard’s property. Or the Crest Hill Business Park. Or Broadway Street. Or Route 30. Or…well, you get my point.
The simple fact is that you have been an economic disaster for Crest Hill, Ray.
How many jobs will the Diocese bring? A lot more (and better paying) than a nail salon, liquor store, or taco stand would have had the property gone to auction as planned.
You profess being a Catholic. Start acting like one.
You are Mayor. Start being one.

Several council members had expressed their concerns during a May meeting regarding the diocese relocating to the strip mall on Weber Road. This sale will cause the city to lose out on sales tax and property tax for that location.
Last week, Ward 2 Alderwoman Claudia Gazal stressed the importance of looking at the available land in Crest Hill to ensure that something like this would not happen again.
Ward 3 Alderman Neal Sternisha called it an “epic failure.”
Mayor Ray Soliman, in collaboration with Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante, brought a resolution before council stating that Joliet and the city of Crest Hill would work with the Diocese of Joliet to find a different site in Joliet.
After reading the resolution Monday night, Gazal reiterated that her concern was focusing on the available land in Crest Hill.

so whats your point?

They expressed concerns over what? Tax revenue they never received?
Face the fact: no one was going to buy that property. Even if it sold at auction, the Olive Garden isn't opening a store in Crest Hill.
The only epic failure that I can see is the epic failure of the city's well-paid economic development staff.

I agree with 'RaysFriend'. There are a few sites that sit vacant or underused on Weber, aside from this site that languished for 4+ years. Maybe this embarrassment (a brand new, ready-for-move-in strip mall that couldn't attract flies) will spur them to develop the other malls/land that they still have.
The diocese took advantage of a great opportunity - which is well within their rights. Sheesh. You'd think Crazy Rock was trying to relocate there.:) Or maybe that's what the Mayor would prefer....

maybe the could open their own bank on the site also,
to pay out to all the victims of sexual abuse.....
