Anthony Wayne Collins is still in the Snohomish County Jail, thank heavens, 3 weeks and one day as of today. His charge has gone from 2nd degree domestic violence assault with a weapon to 3rd degree assault, according to a newspaper article yesterday. The Mom (KLA) has obtained a permanent protection order from Anthony Wayne Collins. I'm glad to hear that. The Mom was also involved in a domestic violence case in 2002 with a different man, so it looks like things haven't been easy for this teen. His parents divorced when he was 5. All of this information is in Washington Courts records. Anthony Wayne Collins doesn't have any right to be beating someone else's son, he has 26 records on the Washington Courts website, dating back to the early 90's. I just hope the Mom and son can find a place to live and she can get her son some help with school. From reading yesterdays article it doesn't sound like this was the first time the boyfriend (which is now being called the stepfather) has beat and/or spanked the teen. The teen said "I knew what was coming" when he called me out to the garage. It sounds horrible, I don't blame the teen for not wanting to go home on July 19th his last day of school, with his report card. With any luck maybe the teen's Dad will give Anthony Wayne Collins a taste of his own medicine.

The latest article is in the Herald Net, Thursday, July 10, 2008. Sadly, the teen was first "spanked" by his Mother, then when the boyfriend/step-father came home from work he was called to the garage and beaten. If the Mom can't help this teen with school work, then maybe he needs to go live with his Dad, unless life would be worse there. The Mom didn't get charged because the spanking she gave her son was considered "reasonable" - didn't draw blood the way the beating did from Anthony Wayne Collins. I would really like to thank the neighbor that called the police (Snohomish County Sheriff's office) on June 19th, when the teen ran from the garage/yard to a neighbor's house for help, you are a hero. He had to be taken to a hospital by ambulance because his blood pressure began falling rapidly. The teen had also been strangled, and felt his arm was broken.

I believe this is very unfortunate, indeed.
And not to disagree, as I may be wrong, but it seems like you're placing >80% of the blame on the male in this incident. Seemingly because it was a male, and again, I may be wrong. But I would like to add my opinion, and I would have to say that the mother is just as guilty as he. Unless you're in the situation, domestic violence will never be what is it to the victim in the sense of fear and understanding, but if you think about it, she apparently hit the child, a 14 YEAR OLD child, initially, and when the boyfriend came home, that's apparently when he assaulted the child as well.
As an active member of Snohomish County Search and Rescue, an employee of Everett Parks and Recreation at a summer camp, having been around, and in, many domestic violence situations, and having been in Child Protective Services and even trained to coordinate with CPS in situations that may arise due to my field of work, I would have to say that you would be mistaken in so easily making the assumption that the blame is all the boyfriend, and perhaps it wouldn't be better that the child goes with his father as you have no idea who the father really is. It would be so nice to just narrow down and place blame on one character in every situation, but sadly that's not correct and I believe, more commonly than not, substance abuse is the most common reason for child abuse. Or perhaps just pure ignorance when giving birth to children, and not knowing how, and having the means, to raise a human being to be a productive member of society. We wonder why the world is so cold, and yet we don't give enough to try and change it.

I bet "Mom" told him to do it. Now the poor b**tard is the fall guy.

Serves him right though. He should think for himself.

The child is dyslexic (see official docs), so this should Not have been a "surprise" to mom. There is also a female child in the house a little younger. There is NO excuse for either the mother or her "man friend", not step-dad.

These days school districts work very closely with parents when children have learning issues. Snohomish SD has a very good reputation for working with the families to help children learn.

Whether she told him to do it or not, I don't know, but obviously she allowed someone besides herself to discipline her child. A sad situation all around. Someone that apparently knows them said the teen is dyslexic. I wasn't dyslexic when I was growing up but I wasn't smart either, no matter how many hours I studied I was a poor student. I wish I had got into the habit of reading, instead of watching TV, that would have benefitted me a lot. Some math I just couldn't get and I can remember my Mother saying to me many times "Well, are you just plain dumb?" It hurt my feelings that she said that to me, instead of helping me to "get it"/understand and comprehend what was such a stumbling block for me.

As an aside, in Seattle there's a case of a woman complaining to a guy about something that happened to her, so he went to the scene of the disturbance and punched this man, the guy died the next day, so now the male is sitting in jail on charges of 2nd degree Murder, and the woman that told him about the situation is free, and probably won't ever be charged with anything because they need her to testify against him, he's a bigger fish to fry than her. It makes me sick, if she hadn't told him, he would have never went to that street, but he made the terrible mistake of going. I don't know how she can live with herself. Even worse, one of her sister's was dating the guy now charged with Murder. Home-life must be very tense for that family now that all of this has happened.

I'm so sorry to hear the child is dyslexic. I hope the Mom has the stamina and fortitude to get some help for him, herself, and his little sister. I know life is going to be hard for her by herself with two children. Hopefully, the groups that work with the prosecutor's office can help them get on their feet and make a new and better start. I read today on the Washington Courts website that he (Anthony Wayne Collins) had pleaded guilty, and will be sentenced on September 8, 2008 at 1:00 pm. I may not be able to go to the sentencing but I'm going to send a letter to the Prosecutor's Office and/or Judge to thank them for charging him, putting his initial bail at $100,000, for taking cases like this seriously and sending a message to the community that we are tired of the Eli Creekmore's, Sirita Sotelo's, and the thousands of other abuse cases. Again, I thank the neighbor that called the Sheriff's Office. Often people don't want to get involved, and I'm soooooooo thankful they did. Kids and teens need us to help protect them. I'm fully prepared for Collins to just get sentenced to "time-served" or 3, 6, or 9 months, but that's okay at least he's lost his job and got taught a lesson by the court that "beatings will not be tolerated".
