Wal-Mart files for store in The Dalles

Certainly hope Wal-Mart makes it through the red tape, this area needs a super Store!

The Dalles does not need a Super Wal-Mart to compete with its already existing businesses. Albertson could not survive and had to close because of competition from Fred Meyer & Safeway. Competition from Wal-Mart will affect the existing supermarkets, pharmacies (Rite Aid & Walgreens), and other businesses (Sears, Kmart, BiMart). Sure, this would bring in jobs, but it will all balance out as many others lose theirs and other businesses see a decline in profit and sales. There is nothing to gain. Has The Dalles not learned from the aluminum plant and putting all their eggs in one basket? The Dalles needs to bring something in that won't compete with local businesses. I saw one report that said that Hood River was not affected by WalMart. Well....the WalMart there is not a super WalMart because Hood River was smart to keep them out. There is no direct competition with the high end downtown boutiques. Think, people, think! Why do other communities protest a super WalMart?

All I have to say is this area is already depressed financially speaking. Building a superstore here will benefit countless members of the community. Per Capita our local demographic is clearly lower-middle income. If local business are so much about "community" then they can just reduce their prices to make their items affordable for the largest portion of the community. If they don't want to do that then I seriously hope wal-mart does end up closing them down. I'm not trying to come across as rude but the ONLY thing I care about at the moment is making it from pay check to paycheck to support my family and give them a life full of laughter and security, wal-mart makes that possible for so many families like mine, local businesses DO NOT!

Thought I would add I do in fact live in The Dalles not sure why it's showing Medford as my location....

Also, Albertson's was in fact making a profit, their corporate office chose to close that location because in comparison to other stores their profit margin wasn't high enough in comparison to stores in larger populus areas (which is the companies error & choice) and quite frankly that store was NASTY. I chose not to shop there because it was filthy and over the last year the quality of their produce and meat went into the crapper.

My wife & I have lived in the in the Hood River (HR)area for the past 20 years. We can remember when Bi-Mart came to The Dalles....we were thrilled!!!

We experienced a similar feeling when we heard
about a Super Wal-Mart coming to Hood River several years ago. That warm-fuzzy feeling was replaced by frustration when the local tide turned against Wal-Mart.

Please try to understand, at times I really hate the HR Wal-Mart (too small and cramped) BUT, in HR it's the only dance in town for buying everyday items. We see ads in the HR newspaper to "shop locally".....OK, I'll try that. With very few exceptions there are relatively few stores that carry what we regularly shop for.

In my work life I've had an opportunity to visit nearly every community in Oregon and Washington. What we have in the Gorge is very unique and special. We also are "special" in that we are pathetically lacking opportunities for shopping and the resulting economic benefits.

I sense an "elitist" flavor lurking about the Gorge that would deny ANY growth. Please be careful what you wish for, you may just get it.

Growth can and must be managed, but we must never the less grow or perish.

the hr walmart is rarely fully staffed and makes me wonder if "they" can appropriately staff a supercenter AND the hr walmart simultaneously. my thoughts, nope.

This town needs a walmart in the worst way. There is no good reason to block WalMart from building here. All it will do is improve this town. If the "city planners" of the past and present are so concerned about this city, then it shouldn't be in the shape that it is now. The prices in the two large grocery stores are so ridiculous that I get angry every time I shop there. Grocery Outlet is the only saving grace in this town. If the elitist are successful in blocking this store it will be a shame and The Dalles will continue to spiral downward.

Albertsons did not close because of the competion, Valumart their new owner decided it was not a profitable store because of the age. Valuemart closed all Albertsons Stores in Oklahoma last year. Walmart will be great addition to my town.

This town is a backwater unable and umwilling we deserve walmart as walmart deserves us

Hood River blocked the super walmart so it will be The Dalles' gain to get it. Fred Meyer and Safeway both overcharge. Walmart will set that right. I live in Lyle, and the only reason we shop in HOod River is because of WalMart. If they put in a WalMart, we will go back to shopping in The Dalles as we used to do. I wish WalMart was already in and open.

I cant wait until walmart comes to town, I love safeway, the workers are great so I will continue to do my grocery shopping there, however i hate fred meyers, they are the most over priced store and have the worst customer service ever, If i got to have bad customer service i would rather have the low prices that go with walmart!!

Have you ever asked yourself WHY Wal-Mart prices are less? Have you researched their reputation and practices?
