I have been visitor to Manistee since 1965. I love it there. I know economic time are hard, as they are here in Indiana. I warn you now that Wal-Mart will be not friend to your communitee. My home town is small like yours and at one time had a busy main street. It was a prosperous town. After Wal-Mart is has many empty store fronts and tough time funding public services. The tax incentive they gave Wal Mart did not expire for several years. When they did, Wal Mart moved to new Super Store out side the city limits. Because of Wal Mart the small family owned business could not compete and are now gone. Wal Mart is like a locus. You do not want it in your town. Low wages and low benefits. Just another benefit of Wal Mart. I know I have am a witness to what they can do to a small town and the neighboring towns too.

Don't sugar coat Sam. I met the man and knew some of his us suppliers in Alabama. The man was unscrupulous. he loved to run small businesses in the ground. No one I ever heard of was glad to do work for walmart.

I work with the poorest of the poor in Manistee and I can tell you that grocery prices alone in this city cause children and adults to go to bed hungry. I am not exagerating. After exhausting the only 2 resources for emergancy food what do they do then. One mom said she doesn't eat so her kids can. Walmart's lower food prices would help these families food dollars stretch. For myself I make a decent wage for this town but in the 15 years I've lived here I have either traveled to Traverse City or Ludington to make large purchases and groceries because I can't afford to shop here either.

You're right - there are many identical grocery items for sale in Glen's/Oleson's and Wal-Mart/Meijer that differ in price by 100%! I'm talking $1.10 at Spartan and 2 for $1 at the big-box store!

I know, it is HARD to compete with the big corporate conglomerates. But it is HARD to make ends meet for many families, and that is the reality we face today. Many families don't care about the buying power that the "evil WalMart" has - they just want to buy food at a low price to feed their children.

Look at the history of a town that allows this giant to move in. Complete distruction of the entire flow of money in these towns. These types of businesses suck the cash out of your pocket, and further yet putting this money into countries with communist governments. Making you beleive that you are getting a great deal deal on a $5.00 shirt, that they still had over a 300% mark up on. This is classic history for the WAL-MART chain! Do the reserch on these trends before you allow your city or county officials to make a mistake like WAL-MART!!!

So when you figure in the cost of gas driving 40 miles round trip, at say $2.25 a gallon, how much are you really saving by doing that?
Come shop in Manistee once and you'll see how much we really save by driving to Ludington. Manistee grocery stores are 30-60% more for anything. Two grocery stores in town and they share the same weekly sales advertisement. Hmmm.

Bob I have and will several times, and I understand that saving money is nice, and WAL-MART will give you that, and soon after there will be just one store left.....WAL MART. Meaning that your entire town puts every hard earned dollar into this store. That means that your entire town might as well become part of the WAL MART family, buy the same cloths, foods, electronics, and all the other same as your neighbors stuff you would be trapped into buying because WAL MART drove your other 2 or 3 choices out of town.
And if you are real lucky when they shut down your store you can work for them, and you can give a large portion of your check right back to them.
Bob I understand where you are coming from, but hold on to the choice you do have, or take the drive to another WAL MART. But in the case with this company better in their backyard not yours.

All this hype and gripe about mom and pop stores closing as a result of Wal-Mart moving in is ridiculous. The stores downtown are unique in their merchandise and would not be affected by this addition to Manistee. When you say we shouldn't be thinking with our wallets well, my response is I can't help thinking of my wallet. I don't work at PCA, Martin-Marietta, Morton Salt, or any other place that pays a decent wage. Like so many others in this town I earn minimum wage without the benefit of health coverage. Having a Wal-Mart would be a definite help to people like me. I go to Ludington when I can in order to shop at Wal-Mart because the bargains cannot be beat. As far as K-Mart goes, I can never find ANYTHING when I go in there. Either they don't have it or it's on order. K-Mart should leave town. It has little to offer whether you're talking jobs or merchandise. K-Mart screwed their people over when they took away full-time jobs in order to avoid health coverage, but still demanded most work 39 hours. Slick! Many of the people who work at K-Mart will most likely get jobs at Wal-Mart and so your friends and neighbors would still be employed, plus a few more. And maybe, just maybe, if this town gets a little more with this century it would spur Manistee to get rid of all the empty buildings around town so the desperation of a bad economy would not be so apparent. I just love it when people who HAVE money can be so arrogant as to forget this town has little to offer young people. Jobs are far and few between and offer no incentives nor do they offer a future worth considering. Wal-Mart is at least fair in their practices with jobs and definitely fair with prices and merchandise availability. People, get over your self-righteousness and help out those of us who could use a little boost up for our very thin wallets.
You are an idiot to think that a Walmart will not effect the downtown markets...

We drive to Ludington once or twice a month to "marathon shop" at Wal-Mart. We will continue to do so until a Wal-Mart builds in Manistee. Even given the gas prices, we save quite a bit of money. We have seen price variations up to a whole dollar less per an item at Wal-Mart versus K-Mart or other local shops. As for it harming K-Mart, I only go there when I absolutely HAVE to. Their stock is very limited, the store is less than clean in my opinion, although, to be fair, it may just be that the building is so old that it may only seem dirty. It also is not a very well organized store. Now that Sears is there, it is crowded, too. I have had employees be extremely rude to me time and again, although management has been very responsive when I have complained. K-Mart will not lose much of my business, as I will pay more somewhere else to avoid K-Mart. I get the impression that K-Mart upper management (not local management) knows they have us over a barrel, with only K-Mart as a large retailer in town. With some competition, maybe their stock would improve, their customer service would improve, and their prices would improve. It really irritates me to see clearance prices "discounted" only 50 cents on an item. What kind of clearance pricing is that?! At Wal-Mart, I love the selection of clothing. I love the grocery selections available, especially the fresh produce. The deli department is great, too. The deli pizzas are a fantastic bargain and are delicious. Please, Wal-Mart, please come to Manistee - and soon!!!
