Karyn's ad was clever. Then, Gross Man takes advantage of a FAKE SCANDAL and mimics her ad. Karyn raised FIVE MILLION DOLLARS for DANA FARBER CANCER RESEARCH with the Plates! But, the Globe Democrat called it ba "scandal", and Gross Man has repeated it in his ads.

FOR THAT ALONE, I am voting Polito. She is the ONLY Republican I will be voting for!

Steve Grossman has tarnished the reputation of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and for that alone, he should be ashamed. He is jeopardizing the health and well being of cancer patients over materialistic stuff like numbers on license plates. How low can a human being go…..hurting other people (sick people) to further his own political career???

If he was truly concerned about it, then why has he not made a statement about it until now?? This was years ago and a quote from Jim Rapparport’s own words…….(As a board member of Dana Farber, I'm outraged by his campaign's false ads and can attest that the Red Sox license plate program, and the $5 million it has raised for cancer treatment, wouldn't have happened without Karyn Polito)……..

If someone worked hard like Karyn did and raised that type of money for such a good cause……… then they can have my #7 plate, and I will take #400. That materialistic crap means nothing to me.

Mr. Grossman has resorted to down right dirty politics. He won’t speak on issues because all he cares about is himself, not for the betterment of the commonwealth. This whole thing makes me sick and he is GROSS.

We must vote for the best fiscally responsible person for the commonwealth, and that is Karyn Polito. She knows how to get the job done!

I support everything she stands for plus she will do something about the politician's pensions. We all have tighten our belts during this economy. Why not politicians do the same?

License Plate Program Facts

Much has been said about the Jimmy Fund Red Sox license plate program. The facts are that we worked hard to secure the 1,500 minimum commitments required by the Massachusetts law to issue the new plate.

When the program officially began and the registry was ready to issue the plates, we set aside seven primarily Red Sox-related numbers to auction at our RadioTelethon. In retrospect, perhaps we underestimated the value some people place on low number license plates and could have auctioned more numbers, but we chose to auction only those seven.

We are grateful for the widespread support of the Jimmy Fund Red Sox plate program, which, to date, has raised $5.4 million to support cancer care and research.

I am a person voting for Steve Grossman I commend Karyn for raising money for cancer research, but why did they applications say "per K Poltio" and how come they got lower numbers even though they were turned in months after??? Thats what i want answer but no body wants to answer it!!

plates were set aside, that's why. those donors paid a lot of money for cancer research. numbers on a plate mean nothing to me and that should not have been dragged in to a political campaign at all. i have no respect for steve grossman.

THE CLAIM

In a TV ad, the Democratic candidate for treasurer, Steve Grossman asserts that the Globe wrote in a story last week that his opponent, Republican Karyn Polito, "grabbed Red Sox license plates that were supposed to be auctioned off to benefit the Jimmy Fund and handed them out to her pals, her family, her donors, and herself." The ad parodies Polito's own commercial, featuring a Great Dane, in which she promises that if elected she'll be a watchdog on Beacon Hill. "So while Karyn Polito says she's a watchdog, truth is, not so much," says Grossman's ad, replacing the Great Dane with a fluffy lapdog.

THE FACTS

The Globe reported Oct. 26 that Polito, her friends, relatives, and campaign donors received 68 out of the first 100 Red Sox "RS" license plates, a special charity plate that came into existence in 2002. The story said Polito, who had filed the legislation that created the plate, received license plate number 2 and her father, brother, husband, and other relatives all received low-number plates. The plates assigned to Polito and her circle, however, were never intended to be auctioned off for the Jimmy Fund. They were supposed to be given out on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone who applied. The Jimmy Fund held back only a handful of the plates to be auctioned off in August 2003.

THE ANALYSIS

Grossman, in trying to gain an edge over Polito in what polls suggest is a very tight race, wrongly asserts that she secured plates reserved for a charity auction. Polito, however, could have run afoul of state ethics laws, which prohibit public officials from using their position to get anything of substantial value.
