Lowell dam owner warns against going into river

Full story: Lowell Sun

About two dozen signs written in three languages warn people to stay out of the Merrimack River south of the Pawtucket Dam, because issues could cause water to flow from the dam at any moment, according to a spokesman for the dam's owner.

This is a good example of a big Corporation gaining control of a natural resource for their own self profit. Just wait until they replace the exisitng wooden dam structure with their new bladder dam. All they will care about is increasing their revenues and profits and will have no concern of the lives they put in danger or the homes they flood. Let them put up a 100 million dollar surety bond to pay for any future flooding they will cause to the homes in pawtucketville and centerville. Automation and advance technology of the dam is a bad idea for the tax payers, keep the wooden structure and the manual staff to control it. we will have less flooding.

Ok, so it's stupid to be out there, and the signs tell you so. But 15 seconds warning? Yeah, and try to figure out what a siren means in this city with all the ambulances along the Boulevard.....
Oh, BTW, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, don't you know that boys should never want to play in a river.

People have been exploring and fishing in that river since before we were a country. Who is Enel to say they can't. These Italians need to be driven back to their own country. Shut down the power plant and tear it down - it does nothing to help the city anyway.

The length of the siren is irrelevant! The boys should have not been down there in the first place!! They should be charged for the rescue! Also, Enel owns the dam and all the rights associated with it. Don't beat them up for looking to make money. What would you do if you owned the dam?

I never understood that additional cost thing. What's the costs? Aren't they fixed? The firefighters are on duty and will be paid whether they're on a call or not, right?

Other than gasoline used to arrive at the scene. What additional costs are there?

Depending on how many officers and firemen were on duty that day they may or may not have had to call people in to cover while they were out taking care of this call.

You bring up a good point about the cost being fixed, if nobody extra needed to be called in then you are correct. However, if there are signs that clearly spell out that they should not have been down there then they should at least be fined. This could have turned out much worse.

They should have signs in Arabic that say "please climb on the rocks, terrorists welcome."

A blind man was seen waiting at a street corner with his guide dog. After a short wait the dog started leading the blind man across the street against the red light.

First a car comes screeching to a halt inches away from him, but still the dog leads on, then a bicyclist almost wipes them out and curses as he goes by. Finally in the last lane a truck swerves and barely misses them.

After they reach the far corner the blind man reaches in his pocket and pulls out a cookie and offers it to the guide dog. At this point another person who has watched the entire episode interrupts asking why he was rewarding the dog after the dog had endangered his life and almost got him run over by a car, bicycle and truck.

The blind man responded: "I'm not rewarding him, I'm just trying to find out which end is his head so I can kick him in the ass."

Nothing like xenophobia to add credibility to your post.
Shut down the power plant and tear it down - it does nothing to help the city anyway.
Except for producing non-polluting power for 20,000 homes and businesses in Lowell, you're right, absolutely nothing.

Those signs can only be read during the day. In a City of 105,000 that is poor security no matter what spin they want to put on it. Poor security for a billion dollar company and who picked those 3 languages? There are more than that in this city.
