I'd prefer streets safer from gangs and free of graffiti. Not everything is about you, Tony.

finally someone steps up, i ride with my family every day, i hate being honked at and being pushed to the end of the road. we need to make some sort of law that lets us ride with out fear in the streets as sidewalks are for pedestrians. Thank You Villaraigosa the ball is in your court make something happen NOW!

As someone who has been an avid recreational cyclist for the past 20 years, I would welcome anything the City of Los Angeles could do to make LA a more bike-friendly city.
One thing I would like to see happen is citing non-cyclists who are on designated bike paths. Apparently there are many people who don't understand that signs that say "Bikes Only" means pedestrians should stay off the bike baths.
Also, there needs to be more vigorous enforcement against people (who are mainly Mexicans) who ride their bikes on the sidewalk. This is illegal because it is dangerous.
Cycling is a great sport -- it is good exercise and non-polluting. It is also a good means of transportation.

Why is the Bike Summit held when most commuting cyclist are at WORK??? "Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — who was seriously injured in a bicycling accident last month" What is serious about a broken elbow? At least he did not fall roller blading. If a camera showed up we would be hearing about it.

I agree but it's got to be a "two-way" street. I realize that bicyclists are very vulnerable when they're on the street and following the rules of the road, but still many are not following any rules. Even worse than those who ride along side parking lanes AGAINST traffic, are those who ride the sidewalks full speed against traffic, often coming into traffic lanes at intersections and from a direction and/or at speed that you absolutely don't expect to see them coming. There has to be rules enforced for cars, bicycles AND motorcyclists (beyond the danger of motorcyclists' permission to split lanes seem to be their self-entitlement to swerve across lanes and around cars at their own dangerous discretion.) It can't just be put on the heads of automobile drivers who are already on heightened alert for reckless and thoughtless drivers of other vehicles but for bicyclists and motorcyclists who seem to ride the road in a state of anarchistic freedom.

Mayor V has a bike accident and holds a bike summit.
Perhaps he'll bounce a personal check and then finally hold a budget summit.

I agree with 'Robert'; far too often i see cyclists not following any rules of the road. They run through stop signs, red lights, cut of cars, etc. It is a two-way street; i am all for people cycling, but cars are not the enemy. Cars are the most used transportation we have, and because of how this city is laid out will continue to be. I live in an area where we get a lot of cyclists...i try very, very hard to be aware of them, and pass them at slow speeds etc. But fairly often you get cyclists who hog the road, break road laws and generally act like THEY are the only ones on the road. We all need to be more aware of each other.

And another thing...you can't see cyclists at night when they do not have a light...i can't tell you how often i see this...they are almost invisible. Use some sense, get a light...if a car hits you, it really isn't their fault but that driver will feel terrible and have to go through all the stuff that might happen due to the cyclists' ignorance.
