Los Angeles Eyes Sewage as a Source of Water

Faced with a persistent drought and the threat of tighter water supplies, Los Angeles plans to begin using heavily cleansed sewage to increase drinking water supplies, joining a growing number of cities ...

In foreign countries, they take sewage and squeeze the water out of it. Then burn it for heating.

Take a tour of a sewage plant sometime in a big city. You will find that they already treat the raw sewage. That's why they call it a "Sewage Treatment Plant." DUH!

Desalinization plants have been an option since the 50's.

Who is to blame for the general public drinking piss and bath water?

If the water is correctly produced by reverse osmosis, it's way better than anything pumped out of an aquafer.

The City of L.A. sends its' sewage basically untreated into the ocean. They have been paying fines rather than investing in proper treatment plants. The area around the sewer outlet pipe is the most toxic slime on the planet. The fish are served to tourists.

Recycling gray water for consumption is an excellent way to mitigate the effects of drought and provide municipalities the resources necessary to serve their growing population. While I agree that the "toilet to tap" concept is unappealing when purposely framed as such, it makes environmental sense. When properly implemented, gray water recycling is safe. Orange County is an excellent example of a community overcoming the gray water stigma.

If you have ever been on a cruise ship you have drand treated sewage. Lance and I don't agree on much in thses forums but he is right on the money. All ships have a reverse osmosis/desalinization plant right on board. The last ship I was on made 118 tons of water/day.

The reverse osmosis desalination plant is to make fresh water from sea water. They still dump raw sewage overboard.

Check your "facts."

Note the slash between reverse osmosis/desalinization plant. Grammatically that means and or. The two systems are not mutually exclusive on a ship. Check YOUR facts. I know mine.

A great portion of water used in Los Angeles,(and other Southern CA rgions) is for watering and keping alive plants in what is, in reality, a desert.

It would be super-fine if this grey water could be piped directly to municipal and private irrigation systems, and water of better pedigree reserved for washing, cooking, and consumption.

This would involve trenching in the sand.

I did check the facts. While many cruise ship do treat their waste water, there is no references at all to recycling it. Once treated it is dumped overboard at sea and off loaded in port along with all the rest of the wastes.

Point me to your facts. I'd be most interested in reading them.
