California beaches become smoke-free

I AM A REDONDO BEACH RESIDENT AND AM APPALLED THAT OUR CITY SHOULD ALLOW DISGUSTING LITTER SUCH AS CIGARETTES ON TO OUR BEAUTIFUL ALREADY DISAPPEARING BEACHS. OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE A LONGER HEALTHY LIFE THAN OFFERED BY A CIGARETTE SMOKER'S HABIT.

Mike, I agree with you.....smokers can do with their bodies what they want, they have that right, but they do not have the right to force their smoke on us or leave the disgusting butts behind. I spead as an ex-smoker of 35 years before I got enough sense to quit; it's amazing how my health is so much better now, should have done this years ago.

So because you feel it is a necessity to drive because you choose to live so far from your job, that makes it alright to spew your carcinogens into the same air everyone, children included, HAVE to breathe? Yeah, THAT makes sooooo much more sense and is of course soooooo much more healthier for all of us. Thank you for poisoning my air. |

Lynda, Not everyone can live close to work in California due to the housing being so expensive plus the area I work in has no public transportation that is running on the schedule I work so therefore I must drive to work in my car. I just don't like someone lighting up a cigarette and blowing smoke in my face.....I have the right not to smell that foul smell nor breath it. It is nice to eat at a restaurant and not have to put up with cigarette or cigar smoke while we eat. No one is passing a law against smoking, we just don't want anyone to smoke around us.....take the disgusting habit off away from people

Okie, hellooooooooo, the dumb smokers can smoke in many places that no one will bother them....home and cars for starters. So, no one is banning smoking per se, just in some public areas where smoking doesn't belong.
And our point is that you CAN have your smoke-free restaurants and bars..........but do you realy need ALL of them? Why can't a few allow smoking so smokers can also socialize AND smoke at the same time? I'd like to walk down the street and not have to smell all that car exhaust but that's not likely to happen. Therefore I have NO choice about breathing in all the carcinogens for your car. But I notice that doesn't really bother you too much. A few bars and restaurants allowing smoking, with the majority of them being smoke free ALLOWS ALL to have a choice. Unlike no one having a choice about car exhaust. THAT is MY point. |

i would rather smell smoke on the beach, then step in some dog crap, or have the flies that breed from that crap land in my food. or be hounded by dogs while trying to relax on the beach. but i guess the dogs got more rights then the smokers.
I also get upset with smokers for their total disregard for others. This is probably why these bans, have become law. I'm sure you know, it was fine when non-smokers had to put up with the smoking. Please smokers when you smoke, don't hold your cigarette down, you might be burning somebody clothes, or maybe a child's face. Smokers are not the only people on this planet. |

Sandcrab......you make a very good point....work on that next to be banned. I agree with you 100%. I get tired of going places and putting up with people's stupid animals; I don't know why they have to drag them along.
Yes it is reasonable, and yet..........the one think under attack (at the moment) is the least damaging to the air we breathe, AND the easiest to avoid if you really want to. I have never once seen a smoker, myself included, deliberately blow smoke into the face of anyone. I HAVE had people walk right up to me, seeing me smoking, and stand as close as they can just so they can complain about it. So tell me, what will be next? Once there are no cigarettes on your precious beach..........will the litter laws FINALLY be enforced? Will they FINALLY forbid drinking on beaches so those of us who can't stand drunks won't have to put up with them? Will they ban boom boxes so those who don't want to listen to your music won't be forced to? Do YOU see where I'm going here? There will always be something that someone does that another doesn't like or finds offensive or unhealthy..........do we pass laws against everything? I don't understand a dislike or hatred so bad that you cannot see the bigger picture, that you actually think it will stop with this one thing that you are in favor of. Open your eyes and look around......it is not a pretty picture that is shaping up out there. |

Mike....can't say I blame you; Lynda is a smoker and they have to come up with feeble excuses as to why smoking shouldn't be banned in certain places, used to do the same thing before I wised up and quit.
Okie....as usual, you are off target again but doesn't surprise me in the least. |
Seriously, I have never once had any of my clothing burned by a smoker, and I'm talking about the very crowded streets of New York City no less. And no, these bans would NOT be necessary IF all you non-smokers exercised your rights as citizens and confronted the bar and restaurant owners in your neighborhood to have some smoke free places to go. But you chose NOT to do that, and instead waited for some fanatics to come along, and start using totally inaccurate numbers to brainwash everyone into fearing cigarette smoke (only I might add) and openly attacking smokers, and then using government to force something that could have been prevented by the citizens in their areas for fair play. You all chose to say nothing and now sit here talking about how selfish and rude and inconsiderate smokers were/are, while giving ground for the government to start controlling all areas of our lives and you're feeling proud. Yes, that makes so much sense. At least we smokers ARE being considerate in that we know there is a perfectly workable solution, a solution that would actually allow for the majority of bars and restaurants to be smoke free. We ARE exercising OUR constitutional right to speak freely and to try to show you the perfectly acceptable options. You however have allowed the fanatics to tell you what to think and are no longer capable of seeing that. THAT is the real inconsideration and selfishness, not to mention a real shame. And you do it all the time while you yourselves continue to pollute and poison the air we all have to breathe without blinking an eye. Seems rather hypocritical to me. |
Feeble excuses? Have you SEEN the air you breathe every day? It is so full of car/diesel exhaust it's not funny. It's NOT a feeble excuse. The whole supposed premise is that this was about health. It obviously isn't and that fact that you can't see that is amazing. I mean really, look at the majority of the posts.......they are all about "I hate the smell" "I hate the butts". This IS about controlling people's choices, and trust me, something YOU like IS next on someone's list. Will you expect us to stand up and fight with you for your pleasure? Smokers have nothing against REASONABLE restrictions. But the restrictions are no longer reasonable and are getting more and more restrictive. They are also already starting on foods and beverages. There's a school that banned the game of tag from the schoolyard at recess because the principal thought it too violent a game (bet they still allow football though). Another town somewhere else is discussing the removal of swings in a playground as being too dangerous. And I'm talking about places right here in the good old FREE United States. |
Interesting because I was NOT arguing. I'm just trying to get you to see the whole picture. Take the blinders off and look around. Trying to show you that there are solutions that work to everyone's satisfaction. How sad you choose not to see that. Have a nice life..........hope they don't come after you next, for you will surely be blindsided when they do for you are refusing to see them coming. |

Live in your dream world smoker!!!! That is the exact lame excuse I used when I was slowly killing myself and trying to justify it. What do you consider reasonable restrictions?
Oh I forgot, watch out for the bogey man; he might be under your bed |
AOL |
Maybe the schools or towns are having to take away tag and swings as the school or town is liable if a child is hurt and I'm sure you don't want your tax dollars being spent that way.
We are only controlling your foolish desire to slowly kill yourselves when you are in our public areas....you can smoke to your little hearts content in your air polluting cars, homes, desert, woods....just not in crowds of people. |
Reasonable restrictions would be 2 out every 10 bars and restaurants allowing smoking. Reasonable restrictions would be places on the beach where smokers can go. Reasonable restrictions would be not trying to equate the smell of smoke as more dangerous than the poisons in the outdoors. You can't possibly be so blinded that you can't see these things. Can you? The bogey man? You actually believe in that crap? I don't. But this might explain your inability to not see all sides of a coin too. |
Have you even seen parks these days? They are all padded and plastic. WE had metal everything growing up and survived without incidence. Be serious, please. And I'll state it again..........when they ban all the pollutants poisoning all the air we all have to breathe, then come complain about my smoke. I have no problem not smoking in the office, THAT makes sense to me, or the movie theater. But there are enough bars and restaurants around that a small handful should be allowed to allow smoking. WHY do you choose to NOT see this as reasonable? |
When I spoke about burning holes in clothes, I meant people behind you. I certainly have had clothes ruined by smokers burning holes in them. I was also burned on my leg; which got infected. I don't know why smokers hold their cigarette down, hold it up in your own face. I don't care if you burn holes in your own clothes, or yourself this is your choice. Again, you can smoke your little heart out, just not near me. |
Do you drive a car??? How do you get to the store to buy your cigarettes??? |
