Point of Sale is a great idea & all money should go into a general fund for repair PLUS part of the RE transaction should include sidewalks be in good repair or else (like low flush toliets are now). We cannot allow the sidewalks to be the property owners responsibility as they are a part of the cities infrastructure.

You mean that since the city hasnt repaired my sidewalk in the past 5 years that now I have to pay to have it fixed? what have I been paying taxes for? I think a better solution is to eliminate some of the bloated bureaucracy and hire more people to do cement work. They work much cheaper and we need them more than we need more paper pushed.

You still can use your own contractor or handyman to do the repair as long as you pull a permit to work on the public right of way. The permit is free anyway, if it is damaged by street tree.

Wait just a darn minute! The sidewalks belong to the City, as do the parkway trees that more often than not the cause of sidewalk cracks and lifting. Why should a homeowner have to pay for a landscaping mistake often made by the City years ago when they planted parkway trees that were going to grow too large?! No, no, no!

the city's tree cracked the cement and the city claimed they would come out and fix it. I would have fixed it myself if I knew they would eventually give up like this.I asked about ripping the tree out and they claimed since it was a city tree I couldnt do it and they wouldnt do it unless it was unsafe. If I have to fix the cement we will see how well that tree keeps growing with no roots on one side!

Does this mean I can remove the sidewalk in front of my house? If I am going to be responsible for it, then I would rather give it back to the city.

I will just rip it up. And then will be sure to return it to them. Just need to give me an address. Speaking of that. Can I do the same with the ugly as tree up near the street?

The problem is the way the building code is written. If the homeowner is responsible then they should be able to hire whoever they want as long as they have a contractors license and insurance etc. Can't do that now. Tree root damage is a function of improper planting. Planting in a sleeve to guide the roots down will eliminate this.

I'm begining to wonder why anyone would buy a home, pay property taxes and then have to fix the cities sidewalks. When 99% of the problem is the cities trees. Next thing you know the home owner is going to be responsible for the potholes in the street in front of their home. Sure hope I'm not giving the city any new ideas.

In the city of the illegal miscreants, the property owner is technically responsible for his property to mid-street -- you heard right! responsible for the maintenance of the streets in front of the residence!!!
