Diana, you seemed a lot more intellegent when you were a citizen fighting government corruption.

"We, the state of New Mexico, have become so dependent upon the oil and gas industry that approximately one-third of our revenue comes from them."
"We" didn't become dependent on oil & gas, the government continued to take the industry & it's money for granted like any wefare recipient does.
Government in NM has had plenty of years to make changes but as long as the cash cow was there government kept taking the milk & doing nothing.
Now that the cow is drying up you want to blame the cow??

What is wrong with natural gas it is clean and efficient it has contributed tons of money to the state. Plus it is available now no new technology is needed and Oboma wont have to give my tax dollars to Mexico and Korea to build windturbins.

One thing that people in New Mexico (not just SJC) need to realize it was Bill Richardson and his staff that personally and intentionally attacked and brought down the States O&G industry with the environmental meaningless 'New Pit Rules'.
The second thing that people in New Mexico need to realize is that this was done because O&G is 1/2 of the States private economy not because it is 1/3 of the States revenue.
The third thing that people in New Mexico need to realize is that Bill Richardson is not from New Mexico and he has no intentions nor aspirations of staying in New Mexico, he is from California and is part of the Socialist Democrat Party of Obama which is purposely controlling the US economy - the worse it is the more power they can take away from the people; they call this the redistribution of income, but the intention is to destroy the value of the US dollar and what we know as the USA.
The fourth thing that the people of New Mexico need to realize is that there are people out there that set up this whole Global Warming/Climate Change/Fossil Fuel scheme to gain support of the voters - to put the Socialist Democrats in charge.

'Either people are in denial or people have their head in the sand'. Relates to:

'How fortunate for governments that the people they govern don't think'.

Diana, your writing is good however I believe there is one issue you need to understand: The San Juan Basin Gas Area with annual production exceeding 1320.7 billion cubic feet is ranked No.1, both by production and gas reserves, out of the top 100 gas fields in the United States.
Being this significant is what led the Socialist Democrats, headed by Obama, to use Bill Richardson as a spear head to attack this production by instigating the "New Pit Rules". It is not just by circumstance that this attack has led to a downturn in San Juan Counties economy, but the States and US economy as well. In other words the US economy was the target.
As you say 'some of the most brilliant minds in this nation are employed by oil and gas' and they thoroughly understand what is happening and that is why they are resisting and trying to educated we the people as to what is really taking place - Global Warming which is now being broadcast as Climate Change, since the Globe has in fact been cooling for the past 11 years, is not part of scientific reality, only another weapon (figment put into your imagination) being used to destroy the US Economy. Yes, you are right 'trouble with a capital-T looms in our faces' until people like Bob Gallagher are able to educate the rest of us who need to stand up and resist the Social Democrats who are attempting to bring us all to our knees.

Corruption is a very serious charge. What evidence do you have that any of our elected officials have engaged in illegal activity?

Diana is right to call attention to the state's over-reliance on a commodity for revenue. Why does this state not diversify its economic base? Single-minded reliance on gas and oil is unwise, and contributes to our current fiscal crisis.

Not to answer for CHS but you might want to google "NM political corruption, Manny Aragon, Bill Richadson scandal," or just check the NM prison.

I agree NM should diversify but Diana jumps right out & blames the oil & gas people instead of the low lifes in NM government.
Oil & gas is a business that wants to sell a product at a profit. When alternative energy becomes profiable,(not paid for by taxing me & you,) it will be done.

Strange, but I seem to remember the "New Pit Rules" proposal being debated in the NM legislature in 2007. Long before Obama had even announced he was running for the pres.
Could it be that you and your conspiracy ideas are full of dodo?
You're also beating a dead horse with this no global warming crap. There's only a few of you left. Kind of amusing to listen to you guys howling in the wind.
As far Social Democrats go, I doubt you know what the term means, let alone who they are. I'll give you some hints though. As a group, they have recently petitioned the President to support the renegotiation of NAFTA to keep American workers from losing more jobs. Also, one of its members ain't President Obama. He's just a plain ole slightly left of center Democrat.

Dianna will NEVER blame the corruption in this state on the elected official, as they are the people her HER vote.

Instead she'll take any chance she can get to blame the oil/gas/coal industry for problems, never looking at the solutions.

You wnat a kick of a conversation? Let's talk with Mesch about her opinions and beliefs on local development, tourism and the social climate of the area. You'll find it's right inline with the rest of the "pull up the gang plank" bunch in Aztec, is, Crowley, Scott, McNall, Anderson, Blancett and Co.

Once again, what is the point of blaming the pit rules for a decline in prices that was world wide?

Honest, Gov Bill just doesn't have that much influence, he just makes a handy scrape goat for the oil field worker who doesn't quite grasp the entire big picture.

Ms. Mesch is correct in pointing out that all our eggs are in one basket. It seems to me that, while yes we do have potential for producing other forms of energy, both fossil and renewal we should look at other venues as well....

Have we ever even considered bringing light industrial to San Juan county? Have we done much with using the resources of the Film Commission to bring movie shoots here? Come on, there are other ideas out there, and San Juan County needs to explore and encourage them.

SJC Liberal needs a Conservative education - The New Pit Rules add 50% to the cost of drilling in New Mexico. Oil and Gas revenues account for 1/3 of the States Government Revenue. This decreases the States reliance on the personal tax payer.
The State of New Mexico tax payer pays 25% of the cost to make a film. This increase the States reliance on the personal tax payer - no tax payer, no film industry.
Now do you understand the difference ?

Why don't you educate us all? I would like to know the source for your 50% increase in drilling costs number.
Also, I don't think SJC was saying do away with oil and gas in NM, she was saying "diversify" a little. Bring in different revenue and job sources and stop this yoyo economy NM has lived with for the past 60 years.
Now what's wrong with that?

'There are a lot of people who are saying, Preserve this area. You have the governor coming out for it, BLM said. They have to look at that as an option — a no-lease, no-drill option.'
Governor really supports San Juan County, talk about 'their collective heads in the sand', Diana C. Mesch !
Build the Green Animal Shelter, Let Echo feed the homeless citizens; this is what Liberals call 'Bridging the Gap'.
Let China take over (they own our National Debt) and you will see some burning of fossil fuels, elimination of trees, and extraction of minerals.

I don't know, stories from newspapers regarding corruption in NM government, several NM public servants in jail or indicted. If you have evidence of innocence you should contact the DOJ, innocent people don't belong in jail.
