Closing of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion

I read an article in The Sun News, "So Long, Old Friend: Pavilion Will Close After This Season", at myrtlebeachonline.com .

I also saw news videos about this story at the WBTW television website.

I am among the group of sad people to read about the closing of this historic entertainment landmark.

I have performed with bands at Atlantic Beach (NC), St. Petersburg Beach (FL), and also at The Pavilion.

I have written and recorded three songs that mention Myrtle Beach within the lyrics.

I have been going to the Pavillion at MB for most of my 43 years on this earth. It is a part of my past and I was hoping it was going to be a part of my children's future. My oldest son is 17 and has never missed a year. Each of my other two children (9 and 8) also cut their teeth on Pavillion rides. I saddens me to the point of tears to think that my next child (to be born in August) will only be their by virtue of my wife. Their is enough high rises, condos, and resorts in MB. A part of history is going by the wayside. I understand that in this day and age of money at all costs the all mighty dollar rules. Just look at the oil companies today. But there needs to be someone somewhere who is willing to do something because it is the right thing to do and not because it is more financially sound. Just like the oil companies, when is enough money enough? I close with tears on my keyboard and hope in my heart.

I am 14 years old and i have been vacationing in MB ever since i was little and everytime we would go to the pavilion and i went last year and im going this year next month in July.this year will be diffrent this is the last time i will see the pavilion i dont think this is right by letting them destroy it it is history it is what makes myrtle beach 'myrtle beach'
i am heart broken me and my friends were planning on goin to MB when we graduate in the future and we were gonna ride everything at the pavilion but our dream is squashed now i will always remmeber it but MB will never be the same with out the pavilion.

I am sad, angry and absolutely in disbelief that those that could stop this are allowing The Myrtle Beach Pavilion to be destroyed. THE MYRTLE BEACH PAVILION IS MYRTLE BEACH. Those people that own the property have more money already than God and the more money they have the more money they want. They have no consideration for the people that can enjoy the everyday things of life like the pavilion. There is nothing they can build that will replace it. Maybe the money they get will fit in to their caskets and then they can take the money with them. I live here, raised my family here and have my grandchildren and greatchildren visit and the place to go is the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. The decision to destroy the Myrtle Beach Pavilion is like trying to replace the Twin Towers with another common building. Stupid, money hungry people.

I have been vacationing Myrtle Beach for the last 20 years. Starting when I was 10 years old I thought there was nothing in the world like the Pavilion. Visiting every year since there has always been a since of urgency to get there. Once I saw the lights from the Pavilion I KNEW I WAS THERE. These developers are only seeing revenue, revenue, revenue. If there is such a demand for these year-around-shops why not build them somewhere else. If these developers wanted to demonstrate there actual sentiment toward Myrtle Beach's historic downtown they would "just leave it alone". DEVELOPERS, I challenge you to just read some of these on-line petitions, listing thousands and thousands of postings of people pouring out their hearts, begging you not to close the Pavilion!!!!!!!!!!

There are various petitions to save the Pavilion going around that you can sign. One is online, a google search will turn it up.

Not that I am for or against the closing of the pavilion. I have pictures my father took of us kids standing on the beach in front of the pavilion in 1964, and the BATH HOUSE was still prominent. The BATH HOUSE part of the pavillion closed many years ago.

As such, Myrtle Beach is matruing as a travel destination, nationally and internationally, it has to compete with places like Miami Beach and Datoyna Beach, so change is inevitable. Many Tourist Destinations become stagnate over the years and becasue of the crys of the people who don't want to see a change, their economy and tourism industry suffer, then it's too late and they " the tourist " are all gone except for the few that didn't want change.

Nothing has really been said about what will replace the Pavilion, but if the trend continues, it will be something so grand that when that changes in 30 years, a new group of people will complain about the changes

Not Suprised-I am glad someone is speaking up about what would happen if the Pavilion did not close down. As I am reading all the comments here, I too am saddened. However, you make a great point that I think people should at least listen to nonjudgementally.
The Pavilion will remain in the hearts of locals and tourists alike. I sincerely hope that they honor this historical structure of Myrtle Beach by creating a museum-ideally in the same place it stands today, even if it is inside or outside the hotel. It is probably too late to imagine saving it now unless a miraculous boycott lead by a celebrity were to interject. So let's just try to come to terms with the situation and go on that ride one last time.

How much does the ticket cost to go to the pavillion this month? Someone told us it is 10 dollars per person. Is that correct?

well well they took are money all these years and now they subtrack all the millions of family's who come miles and miles and those who live here and grew up with the pavillion greed comes thru once again. that's the main reason if they can see more money makeing all the other's don't have a chance we AMERICANS are saleing are roots, those same roots are great ,great fathers would get up and work untill sun up untill after sun down. yes we have all the common things of life we have it easy but oneday when we realize's hey there's no trees left and that's when there will be no air to have then what??
money has and always will be are trouble of are times.

When the teens and childern are gone, then too the parents will softly retreat...then the blue hairs move in for the kill. Wa-la Miami Baech of the 70's is born....Gosh darn it, I forgot MB, you don't have a tropical climate, I'm not quite sure what you will be left with....it may not be pretty.

I realize that no-one has posted in this thred for a while, but thought I'd give it a go... We are currently in the process of filming a documentary about the closure of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and the impact that this is having on the local area and community. myrtle beach sucks now!!! its never going to be the same without the pavillion. actually depressing. well guess its time to change beaches. maybe ill start going to daytona. those who know this beach know that the volume of people has gone down. so im with yall on this issue its retarded they took away the pavillion.

I,like so many others,went to Myrtle Beach every summer for many years. I always hated coming home and all I could think about going back next year.I always headed straight for the Pavillion.
Does anyone remember a band called The Villagers ?
I was just curious as to what ever happened to them.
