Trayvon Martin Shooting Shows Perils of Lax U.S. Gun Laws

Perceived lax gun laws will not save the crime-watch guy in he end. When the facts are revealed, he may be charged.

I am all-for castle doctrine and stand your ground. However in this case, it appears the self-styled crimewatch guy was following his suspect (and asking him questions), which does not make a case for 'stand your ground'. In most places, in order to be a self defence shooting, the shooter should NOT be a participant in causing the difficulty. Following somebody could easily be construed by most as participating in the problem.

Town watch/community watch is supposed to be heavy on the WATCH part. I think this guy has got his ass in a sling...and probably deserves it.

It is an emotional event but people need to slow down and let the investigation take it's course.

Stand your ground is an excellent law but these are modern times and all shootings are investigated in Florida.

Ah, yes, they were lining and whining up on Sgt. Schultz's MSNBC show, Reverend Al and the Brady Bunch big-cheese babbler. They ought to show up after they buy Leon Harrison's "Genuine $19.99 Makeshift Shrine". Serious crime decreased after Florida passed its current Concealed Carry Weapon law. People can abuse it and use it, like any other, including criminal and crazy sisters and brothers.

I do sincerely express my empathy and sympathy to Trayvon Martin's family members, friends and kin; but will not try to lie and claim that I feel their pain. Nor will I compete in a compassion contest.

"It should be emphasized to members that they do not possess police powers and they shall not carry weapons or pursue vehicles," the manual states. "Members should never confront suspicious persons who could be armed and dangerous."

Zimmerman is reportedly the self-appointed leader for the group at his complex of town homes. A sign at the gated entrance warns it is surveilled by Neighborhood Watch, and says, "We report all suspicious persons and activities to the Sanford Police Department."

That's a prudent step for any neighborhood. In fact, Neighborhood Watches are popular in Central Florida. In Orlando alone, there are 905 block captains listed with Orlando police.

Some groups are highly organized and walk their neighborhoods in scheduled patrols. More often, though, neighbors just get acquainted with one another, exchange phone numbers and learn to report anything out of the ordinary that they notice as they move through life's predictable moments: taking out the garbage, walking the dog or getting the mail.

Even the basis for Zimmerman's initial phone call is questionable.

Here's why: The sheriffs' association manual lists the type of suspicious activity that should be reported to police. Among the examples: "Someone peering into car windows" and "broken doors or windows."

Nowhere does it list walking while black, which is all Trayvon appeared to be doing as he made his way back to the house of his dad's fiancée after a candy run to 7-Eleven. Trayvon was armed only with a package of Skittles in his pocket.

I would recommend people on a neighborhood watch alone or in a group think of themselves as eyes only.

Your cell phone calling 911 then giving clear and detailed information is your weapon against crime.

If it is not clear by now back off and let your tax dollars do the heavy lifting.

Sometimes it is better to be John Doe then John Wayne.

Crime went down in Florida after CCW laws, with stand your ground provisions, were passed by the people; citizens legally armed to defend and protect themselves and loved ones from harm. One wannabe cop nut with a gun should not change this. Such and similar scenarios are taught and discussed in every CCW class with NRA instructors; emphasizing criminal and civil consquences of using a gun for self-defense and for fun.

Agree 100% and the statistics bear this out. Won't stop the polluticians and frustrated control freaks from clammoring for more gun alws that aren't obeyed by those engaged in illegal activity.
But the nagging on the NRA will continue unabated by the feeble minded.
