Full story: Long Beach Press-Telegram

Deputy Police Chief Robert Luna told a crowd of worried parents Monday night that witnesses who saw the alleged gunman with a weapon before the shooting of Melody Ross failed to report him, but said if they had, her death might have been preventable.

Let me get this straight... there were folks who saw "the alleged gunman" with the gun prior to the shooting and failed to report him? Can we charge them with FELONY STUPID? Good grief! A 16 year old would be alive today if these people had only spoken up. May their conscience haunt them forever.

This was NOT an isolated incident. Long Beach is gangsta turf where Crips like Snoop Dogg are idolized.
We sold and left the Wilson neighborhood and Long Beach for good in 1974 as the area filled up with people who had no respect for their neighbors or the law. Its just gotten worse.

Let me add that I saw loaded 0.45 caliber guns at Wilson way back in 1963. I didn't say anything for fear of retaliation. In Long Beach schools, you quickly learn to watch out for Numero Uno.

OK it is safe. Thats why gang members are at the game and why 3 people got shot that night. Why believe those that were not even there when the game let out. I believe Wilson Grad who left in 74 as it was not safe even then. Don't complain, it is safe just does not cut it. And as the prior chief thought Snoop Dogg, a known gang, idiolized tells you the city is going to the hoods. I would not live there as who knows if you are safe. The city needs a Chief Bratten to clean it up.
Someone saw the gun prior to the shooting. Who would they have told, as the police were not there. Why because the school did not pay. Any public event where gang members are known to be there needs police. This is their job and why taxes are being paid. Anytime a gang member is anywhere there is a good chance they have a gun. So don't blame the shooting on a citizen that did not report the gun. When did they see it...right before he shot. If the gand detail was there maybe they could have stopped a known gang member and questioned him.

Of course people saw the shooter with a gun and failed to report it. Doesn't that happen almost every time some scumbag walks out of his house with a gun in his belt? These people, these urban terrorsts exist only because the rest of us allow them to. No one picked up their cell phone to call 911. As long as the rest of us cower in fear, these punks will continue to terrorize our city, including our schools, and murder people in the streets.

It wasn't Beverly O'Neil that said it. It Was Laura Richardson Batts that said it. Typical crap of hers coming out of her mouth.

No, that was Congressional rep (then council member) Laura Richardson who made that statement.

So I'm strongly suggesting that Davion also gets convicted of murder. They both took part in it. One pulled the trigger and the other didn't stop him, therefore suggesting if Tom didn't do it, he definitely would've. Partners in crime so you both need to do the time. This system is so pathetic though I highly doubt either one of them will serve a full murder or attempted murder sentence. They'll be out in about 5-10 on good behavior. So who's going to die next? Let's keep the PT writers employed for an extra week until the hype dies down on another long beach shooting. Does a family member of a police officer have to die to finally have affirmative, impacting action demolishing gangs from long beach? Let's do what HG did to their problem. Tighten up your gang unit and smash these crip gangsters that roam around in groups terrorizing residents since they're scared to do so alone. Why do police officers get away with not doing their job? You get paid to help people and I haven't seen too many LB cops do so.

Yes, if it's really true that someone SAW this bonehead WITH A GUN and didn't do anything about it - it's an almost unbelievable level of stupidity! Even my wimpy, mind-my-own-business butt woulda spoke up once I saw a gun.

Pretty wild wasn't it - when city officials were wrapping the arms around Snoop - the same Snoop that would toss up 'Westside' faster than he would spout out LBC. Hmmmmm, what did that "C" stand for? Speaking of signs, it was just a huge sign how clueless are so-called leaders were about gang issues. Snoop should hang his head low for his promotion of gangsterism. He'll get his pay though, ultimately he won't escape.

And Jon Meyer. Oh brother. Are you kidding me? I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one that decided REAL police presence was not needed at a sold out event with tons of teenagers out on a Friday night. When Jon Meyer was a principal, he was notorious for coddling gang members. Sure that soft touch works with some hard heads but most of the times they just laughed at him after he tried to give them the 'turn your life around speech.' He should have never been allowed to be a high school principal, he's way too soft for the big leagues.

Let's ask again - why was there not ONE LBPD car, lights a flashing, a preventable presence, at the spot where hundreds of people flooded out the school gates into almost complete darkness ????????

I know I sound like a Monday morning quarterback but seriously, somebody fumbled big time on that sad night in Long Beach history.

No kidding...the odd thing is Park Avenue has lights every 25 feet on both sides, but they don't use that side of the school and should. They need to spend the money on camera's.

I thought Chief Batts was the one that got on stage with Snoop Dog the gang member and gave him praise. He would not show up to other good events but jumped to praise the gang member. Is this wrong? I thought his wife Laura was just the one being investigated for all the ethics issues. What a team.

So are we blaming the shooting and Long Beach's gang problem on Snoop Dogg?? You gotta be kidding me. Gang shootings in Long Beach were taking place when Snoop was still in diapers! Get real!

Are you people so out of touch with reality that you really think that Snoop Dogg and his influence has something to do with gang violence in Long Beach?? NOT!!!! Gangs violence in Long Beach has been around loooong before Snoop Dogg! If you're gonna blame his music, then you must blame Rap music in general, and believe me when I say that ALL ethnicities listen to and support Rap artists - and that includes Snoop Dogg! It's a Hip-Hop and Rap culture that our young people live in. It's influence is broad and can be very negative, but it's up to the PARENTS to "parent", not rap artists! Violence and disrespect with our youth - from ALL racial groups - is at a peak, and we are resolved to writing comments to press telegram articles. Sounds like effective and active preventative measures to me...not.

Why is everyone blaming this on Snoop dogg?? Just because he's from Long Beach and a celebrity??Let's be rationale here gangs were here for a very long time. I cant believe in this century today this crap still exists. The unfortunate part is gangs go out recruiting the younger kids so it becomes a cycle and new members are created while the older ones either "retire" because their too old to bang

you big dummies, no one is blaming this shooting on Snoop.

we are just goofing on certain city officials that shook hands with a dude that promoted and benefited from gangster blood music-money.

actually, i like the sound of Snoop - i just think the pro-gangster lyrics he used to make money was wrong, no matter how you cut it.

I agree with StayAtHomeMom - whenever we allow criminals and suspicious persons to wander our streets without reporting it WE are at fault. No matter who/what you see that looks suspicious REPORT IT and let the police figure it out. If you see someone with a gun call the cops! Let the police ask the questions. You can call and leave anonymous tips for crying out loud so there is no reason to fear "retaliation" or this "look out for NumeroUno" attitude. These types of attitudes are B.S. and a just good excuse for being lazy and passing the buck to someone else. Then guess what those same people are the first to BLAME others for everything that happens. Take some accountability people! People expect police to have some sort of psychic ability about everything that happens at every second in this city, but there are way more citizens than police, and if we take responsibility for our neighbhorhoods we can root out crime. I've seen it happen! Yes there should have been a better security/police presence at the game that night, and perhaps that MIGHT have deterred these gang members from getting in a fight, honestly, I doubt it. People who are determined to be up to no good will always try to find a way. So keep your eyes open and the police number stored in your cell phone and MAKE THE CALLS that need to be made to stop crime. If you don't then you only have yourself to blame.
