Stop talking about culture, we dont have this issue with Asians and Indians.
Somehow, Blacks and Mexican have "victim" attitude and "education" never been number 1.
I'm glad im asian, and my culture force a great value on education.
Poor + Uneducated people are recipe for trouble.

Stop spreading ignorance. There are considerably less asians immigrating than mexicans and blacks. They also have considerably higher IQ's (105-110) so their road to assimilation isn't nearly as much of an arduous challenge While it's true they bring their clan/gang culture with them, they are much more likely to not make it a lifestyle into middle-age. Think about it. How many middle-aged asian gang members do you ever run across? Not many. Middle-aged blacks and mexican gang members are a force to be reckoned with. The common Asian trait of subjugating women is a private concern that police don't have to deal with. Find below an example of a cultural habit that police are forced to deal with here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/740757... Black Africans come from a completely different culture than those of established western europe, of which American culture is based. This is why they have yet to fully assimilate, even after a hundred years. And that is why they fail. Importing people from with almost hard-wired cultural traits antithetical to western european traits is a recipe for cultural and economic disaster. What this means is, we are still paying for cheap cotton produced in 1850. |

I'd fire sgt. Coy in a heartbeat. That idiot has no idea what he's doing. He's flirting with young girls and telling kids to erase tagging done by others? Does he want to escalate the violence there or what?

Mathias D., do you live in Los Angeles or Long Beach? Everyone is affected by crime; the amount is a matter of degree the community is willing to tolerate and accepts culturally. As any Long Beach resident knows, Mathias’ hypothesis is flawed because on a typical East Long Beach high school campus (i.e., Lakewood, Millikan, Wilson), only approximately 1/5 of the 5,000 student population is comprised of students residing within its attendance area. The cultures and values of the majority of imported students is completely different from those of the area residents of schools they attend (of course there are exceptions). Beats with high gang related crime export their "influence" to low crime areas. Also, the scatter of gang related crime on the beat map statistics and location of schools clearly shows that gang related crime, where East Long Beach schools are located, suddenly spikes from very low numbers in the surrounding beat areas. The majority of students transported are coming from the Poly attendance area – the highest crime beat areas (remember those cracker box apartments turned Section 8). Poor West Long Beach gang infested neighborhoods produce gang children that are transported into schools located on the safer side of East Long Beach (good for them) but bad for area residents. Consequently, crime infestation in one area of Long Beach affects all areas of the city. Eradicate gangs and then crime will all but disappear. Illegal immigration is the main catalyst for gang crime when school demographics are examined. Gang Related Crimes: Beat 1 - 80 Beat 2 - 170 (Cabrillo High School) Beat 3 - 80 Beat 4 - 396 Beat 5 - 274 (Poly High School) Beat 6 - 199 Beat 7 - 215 Beat 8 - 103 Beat 9 - 8 Beat 10 - 4 Beat 11 - 76 Beat 12 - 50 (Wilson High School) Beat 13 - 4 Beat 14 - 1 Beat 15 - 32 (Millikan High School) Beat 16 - 8 Beat 17 - 7 (Lakewood High School) Beat 18 - 8 Beat 19 - 28 Beat 20 - 31 Beat 21 - 136 Beat 22 - 124 (Jordan High School) Beat 23 - 107 Beat 24 - 106 http://lang.presstelegram.com/flash/beatmap/b... http://www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/District/pdf/LBUSD... |

Excellent series, and maybe, just maybe, it might light a fire under the city's politicos. But I don't have any real hope. I've lived in Beat 4, 2 blocks from Poly High, for 7 years now, trapped there by the spiraling rents in nicer cities. I'm one of only a small handful of native English-speaking people in the neighborhood, a minority in my own country, a stranger in a strange land. I jones to get away from the crime, the hate, the tagging, the illegal immigrants next door who throw wall-rattling all-night parties, sell drugs and give liquor to minors and the police refuse to shut them down because the old man is allegedly the street's gang grandfather/godfather and I guess they are either afraid of or in cahoots with him. The city's policies on parking (refusing to mark parking spaces, whole neighborhoods with blocks of 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. street-sweeping, and encouraging unrestrained development without mandating adequate off-street parking)mean we take our lives in our hands any time we come home after 7 p.m. and have to park blocks and blocks away and trek through Beat 4's criminals to get home. Sadly, I've given up on finding solutions to Long Beach's descent into gangs and crime except to pray to win the lottery so I can move before I end up an anonymous chalk outline on a sidewalk.

This is an outstanding article. Inerestingly as an income property owner in the Beat 4 area I contacted Council L's office a few months ago. I was seeking her support to promote building of quality housing and garages on my property. I suggested her support for a waiver of building permit fees as many other so cal cities have done to promote quality energy efficent units in blighted areas. I got a cold reception, and e mails for art debuts and funraisers.......

Long Beach Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal is anti-resident and anti-business. She is running for the 54 Assembly District. Constituents are merely fodder for her real agenda --the proliferation of poverty to gain political power. 54th Assembly District Race "LBJJ: Why are you running for the 54th District Assembly seat? Lowenthal: I'm running to continue my lifelong service to the community, to advance a progressive agenda that leads to social and economic justice and to improve the quality of life for my communities and for my state." Long Beach Councilmembers Vie For 54th District Assembly Seat Long Beach Business Journal, April 29 - May 12, 2008 P.S. Lowenthal's opponent, Tonia Reyes Uranga is no better. |

Mexicans don't have victim attitudes, Blacks do. Even though they instigate the problems as to where they become the victims. |

Indeed, which is why decent, law-abiding citizens are fleeing Long Beach at every turn, leaving it to the illegals and the gang-bangers. City officials are only interested in developing Pine Ave. and the so-called over-priced, no-parking spaces Arts District. My landlord would put in a driveway, but the house is pre-1943 and requires permits from the state. I, too, have written for help and received a flurry of invites from the Neighborhood Resources to "meet my neighbors". In order to converse with my neighbors, I'd have to learn Tagalog, Cambodian, Vietnamese, gangsta and Spanish. And these are people who've been in this country for over 20 years and don't speak a word of English, nor do their children. So don't hold your breath if you really want to do some good in our Beat 4 neighborhood. You'll get no help from the City. |

I agree. I was walking home one day and some kids ask me where I was from. I had no answer and they followed me home.(19th & Cedar). Lucky for them and me, things did not escalate, because I would of took it there.(Murder in self-defense).

Lighten up Adam, everybody plays the victim, not just one group.

It scares me that someone as angry as you appear to be has a daughter. I agree that hanging out with gang bangers is STUPID and DANGEROUS however to say you'd rather shoot her is RIDICULOUS. Please learn the power words have and if need be, refrain from speaking again. Thanks! |

THAT WAS A GOOD WAY TO HANDLE THE SITUATION . WE NEED MORE HEART IN OUR POLICE DEPT. OFFICERS THAT ARE GOING TO ENCOUNTER YOUNG KIDS TRING TO BE COOL,AND NOT EVEN KNOWING WHAT COOL IS. WE CAN ALL FIND OTHER WAYS AROUND THIS ANGER THAT IS TAKING THE WORLD IN THE WRONG DIRECTION . NONE OF US ARE EVEN SEEING WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR FAMILIES AND LIVES ,WHERE IS THE LOVE OF FAMILY-TOGETHERNESS-AND TEAM WORK- THAT AMERICA HAS ALWAY BEEN SO GOOD AT?

CORRECTION: Mexican women generally do have victim attitudes. It's just that it's not pro-active. It's the only way they have to cope with Mexican men. Mexican men do not generally have a victim attitude, and they take care of business, and manage their responsibilities. They often have more than one job, in order to send money back to relatives in Mexico, as well as to make sure his wife, children, second wife, children, third wife, children, and girlfriends and their children are all taken care of. |

We did have a very distinct team-oriented approach, but when Ted Kennedy opened the floodgates of unbridled immigration, everybody became a free agent. I think it's a wonderful irony that he's just been diagnosed with cancer. Now he'll get to finally experience illegal aliens in a way he might finally understand. |

It's funny how anonimity can give people the courage to make unfounded quick judgements and then comment on them without thought. It saddens me that you put more faith in the judgment of a 14 year old girl who is clearly walking down the wrong path, then in the man who is trying to help her--a man who has spent most of his adult life CHOOSING to help the people of Long Beach, and risking that life day in and day out. His comment meant, "He would punish her, or be angry" that you would even assume otherwise is ridiculous. This man is not a disgrace to his family, and he is a very fine example of a father, a citizen, and mostly a police officer because he cares! I am not making quick judgment based on this one article--I know this man, and he is as good as they come. |

What is the obsession with tagging in the Latino community? It is such a eye sore not to mention it looks like it says blah, blah, blah. It's like a dog pissing on a tree or someone giving a hickey to another. Who cares if you mark your territory? It means NOTHING. They want to be somebody and be known but for all the wrong reasons. There might some real talented artists out there. Maybe they could be a real artist or even tattooing. There is just a real lack of direction and family guidance. Not to mention it really does not do the Latino race any justice. There are so many great Latinos that are being prejudiced against because of acts of a few misguided individuals. I hope they find some great community leader. SOON.
