Hi Mr Becker,
Actually I am Roy Chace's wife writing as if I were he. Pay no attention to my 'grammer.' I am sorry we weren't able to see any of the plays you produced or directed. Was pregnant when we arrived in April. Baby born in Nov. Another the following Nov. In the Paris American or American Hospital on Vic Hugo Ave in Paris. Audrey Hepburn was quite the lady. How fortunate for you to know her. We had housing in Petit Beaugard by Bel Manoir. Not on base. I do not remember any of the architecture at Camp Des Loges. You mentioned the all African-American producvtion. That brought back memories of an African-American dance we went to although we didn't know it was all A-Am. We were the only caucasion couple. Usually it is the A-Am who gets surrounded by the crowd clapping and cheering them because many are such good dancers. We were the one's being surrounded and cheered on with the twist. Really was a fun evening. Good luck in your endevors Jen Chace Still looking for anyone who knows of Betty and Bill Morgan - Army. Ray and Sue Ducette - Navy. |

Mr Becker,
Is the book finished and published? What is the name? Jen Chace |

Thanks for helping out! I actually live in the Montreal area; that Toronto address cannot be changed by me since the customer server must be there.
I just went to Google Maps where a lot of these places now exist from street level and that is an absolute mind-bender! |

My Dad worked at HQUSEUCOM at Camp de Loges from 1959 - 1961. We lived in St. Germain-en-Laye and I attended the Paris-American School of Paris in Garches. I have fond and vivid memories of: going to La Plage and the Jardin D'Acclimation in Paris, 32 Rue Marbeuf (sort of a PX annex in Paris), hanging out with friends in Petit Beauregard and walking over to the PX at Bel Manoir, exploring the German bunkers in the woods by Petit Beauregard, watching the SHAPE football team with a quarterback named Eddie West (a quarterback at NC State), playing little league and attending SHAPE Day Camp.
One summer, we were all set to go camping in Spain and my Dad's leave was cancelled because of the activities of the OAS (Organization d'Armee Secret) during the Algerian crisis. Other trips were to Garmisch every Christmas...stopped in Stuttgart and stayed in the Patch Barracks and then stayed at the Ibsee Hotel in Garmisch. I could go on and on. The Paris-American School (a DOD school) is now the American School of Paris (not affiliated with the DOD). I have visited St. Germain and all the surrounding areas many times since which only rekindled memories from a very exciting childhood |

My name is Samuel McGaugh and I was born in Chinon December 1963. My family lived in Poitiers, off base, but my sisters went to French schools. We left France when I was 18 months old, therefore, I have no memories of my life in France.
My sisters' names are Billie, Nora (Sissie), and Peggy Sue. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who also lived in Poitier from 1961-1965. I have been back to Poitiers, Chinon, and Paris a couple of times since becoming an adult. That area of France is so beautiful! |

I was stationed in Orleans France from June 1960 to September 1962. My post of duty was Harbord Barracks, 269 Signal Co.(Svc). It was a gret experience and I found the people in the city of Orleans very pleasant. I also lived on Rue Bannier off post. Great city!

In 1958 I played in the COMZ basketball tournament in Orleans. Our team was a small post in Braconne (BASEC). We went into the championship undefeated in a double elimination tournament. We lost to Orleans twice. They went on to the USAREUR (US Army in Europe) championship in Germany somewhere. Love to hear from anybody, anytime.

Hi: I played on the Rochefort Post baseball team in 58. We won the ComZ championship and got beat by Nancy to go to Germany. I won the pitching title with a record of 11 and 2. I lost the two games at the end of the season in Chinone, in two days. It was a pretty good brand of baseball and I was thankful for the opportunity to play with such good players. I'm not sure where Braconne is. Seems like I was there though. After baseball I went to the 279th Army Band in Poitiers and finished out my tour. Richard Applegate |

Hi Richard.
For one season we didn t have a field. All our games were away. Then in 59, we build one across the road from our base..Braconne is about 10ks from Angouleme, through a village of LaRochfaucauld(sp?). I may have had a disaster pithing agains your team in 58 I think. I was a wild lefty (with a sore arm that only I knew about). Coach brought me in with the bases loaded 0 outs, I walked in 4 runs, trying to throw soft stuff. Myteam was screaming at me to throw the smoke. lol. I did. Genterfielder i think, hit a g slam off me, and my career was over. I d love to correspond. JimFinn |

Bonjour Roy Chace of Fall River, MA.
(Is Fall River where Lizzie Borden chopped up her momma and poppa? There was a song about that in the musical "New Faces of 1952", the Broadway show that brought us Eartha Kitt and Ronnie Graham). Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Bad case of the flu thst's finally ending. No, the book is still being writen. I probably have another couple of years on it. It's fiction (a novel) but the places are real and the research consumes much time. Also the house and yard demand a lot of atttention as well. Some of the story takes place in a few military bases in France, and some of it in many parts of the U.S. My short stories have been publlished, also a play and finally my memoirs when I was working as a film dialogue coach in France, "And the Stars Spoke Back". There's a chapter about Audrey Hepburn, another about Rex Harrison, and two about Peter O'Toole, among many actors that I coached. The book was published by Scarecrow Press almost 5 years ago now. Thanks for your interest. Frawley Becker frilobus@sbcglobal.net |

Salut, Jorge!
I'd love to find out more about your Harbord Barracks and the base at Orléans. Don't know if you've picked my name up before because I've been corresponding with a couple of other ex-military guys, one from SHAPE, another from Landes de Bussac, and a few others. If you have, then I'll be repeating myself, but here goes: I'm a published book author, published short story writer and published and produced playwright. My last book, "And the Stars Spoke Back", came out almost 5 years ago, memoirs of my post-EUCOM years when I was no longer with the State Department and became a movie dialogue coach for all the big international stars of the Sixties. My present work-in-progress is a novel, and while the story is fictional, it is based on real places, mostly 1959-1961. Camp des Loges figures most prominently, but there are scenes at SHAPE, Orléans, and Landes de Bussac, a small post in southwest France, near Bordeaux. The one I have the least information on is Orléans. I'm sure I could come up with a list of questions and it sounds like you would be an excellent source for me. The questions would include the Motor Pool, the PX, military housing for a married sergeant, and generally what the base looked like. Would you be good enough to answer questions for me? If so, may I suggest we correspond by e-mail? I don't always check this site, and the e-mail would be easier and faster. You can check me out on line as being authentic just by name. Usually my book and a play produced in New York come up. I was at Camp des Loges, Hqs EUCOM from 1958-1961 as a civilian with the State Department as an Entertainment Director. Here's my address: frilobus@sbcglobal.net Hope to hear from you! Mille mercis! Frawley Becker |

Great memories; we used to shop at the Petit Beauregard; there was a cafeteria there with wrought iron decorations of the eiffel tower, leaning tower of Pisa, Big Ben, inside; there was a small newsshop down the covered walkway with comic books. We wern't allowed to shop in the Commisary but maybe that was a good thing (being Canadians); we vacationed in Spain at La Bella Allegre south of the Toro Brava beach south of Barcelona. Gee, was your dad in Mil. Intel if he was preoccupied with the O.A.S.? We had some grafitti near the SHAPE school never knew what it meant at the time.

Hello Elie. A`int this something. My first question is how is your Mom & Dad ? Regretably my brother Doug & my Father have passed away over the past 3 years , my mom & sister are fine. I`m just fine as well. As for ex pats I have a vague memory of spending a day with ken Usher & one of the Wright brothers in about 73.The only other was our direct neighbor in shape village who is the newsman on CBC Newsworld Harry Forestall.
So how do you plant 40 years in a box this size. I think we need to have a wee chat on the phone. If so give me a time & number & I will ring ya. Have a good day Rick |

Thanks for all that! My father passed away in 2004 and my mother lives with my wife and I. Sorry about your dad and brother, Rick.
I heard that one of the Ushers had died of cancer? We kept in touch with the Westhalls and the Skirrows until they passed away or got ill. I can't believe that is the broadcaster Forstall!! I still have film with you on it in your baseball uniform, at the Jones,s birthday party with a gun. Can you give me your number and I will call you first? Has to be spelled out here; wont' take numbers, thanks, ELIE |
