So, the theory in Long Beach is that cars and bikes should share the road more often?

I feel bad for this man who died and my sympathy goes out to his family. Let this be a reminder to all bike riders in Long Beach: You must abide by the same laws as the cars do. Bike riders do not have the privilege of running red lights, or stop signs for that matter. And please, for those bike riders who love to ride in the opposite direction, if you get hit by a car it will only increase the force of the impact and therefore your injuries. Please be safe!

From what I understand, 6th ST is where people are just coming off the freeway. People are usually zipping on that 3 lane race track. Are there any witnesses? Did you check the traffic camera? Is there one there and if there isn't, why isn't it there? None of what you are asking really matters. The driver had a green light and the bike ran a red light. If the driver was released at the scene you can assume he was not drunk or otherwise influenced. Don't be so quick to judge.

I too live in the area and can clearly see the 6th street offramp and almost every vehicle coming off that offramp never slows down or obey's the speed limit and there is an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL right there! On friday night at about 10pm I had my daughter drive me to rite-aid and it looked to me like the accident had just happened, the bicyclist was still laying in the street with no one giving him any type of help, just a look of complete shock. There was no ambulance or any police officer at the scene then. I am saddened to hear that the man did not make it! I too agree that they need to do something about that intersection or even tickiting speeders that don't obey the traffic laws coming off of the freeway during day or night!

And over here, the police and CHP are trained to cover the deseceased with a yellow blanket asap.

They desperately need to do something! I heard this accident and immediately went outside and could tell it was not good for the victim. No movement the whole time from what I could see. It amazed me at how passive the driver was, when coming to check on the person he hit. Maybe it was shock or something, or he could tell he was dead? Driver was dressed in business attire and probably somewhere in his 50's and 300+ pounds, didn't appear to be intoxicated or speeding from where he stopped and the debris, but at 30mph hit it was sure good enough to kill the bicyclist and push him quite a ways. Sorry to see that guy dead in the streets last night, that's for sure. Say I am quite mystified...I drove by the accident. I saw the bicycle, with a milk type crate on its carry back, laying down on 5th Street, close to Magolia, why are they saying it happened on 6th and Magnolia????????? And there is no signal light on 5th and Magnolia, I know there is on 6th and Magnolia.Whos got the right answer. And for the person that wants to know which hospital, go the Mapquest, type in address and accident area, and then check for local hospitals, and bingo St Marys is the closest one, there's your answer, that was not that hard was it?

Also why you want to know which hospital, if the guy passed away already.

Thank you for the info. We contacted St. Mary's, St Mary's gave us the number to the Coroner. We spoke to the Coroner, however we are not for certain this is the uncle based on the desriptions. We will have all of our questions answered tomorrow when the homicide department opens. Please keep the family in your prayers. This is the most difficult time the family is facing not know if it is indeed their family member who was killed on Friday and no one knew..

For your info Mr. Fester, I do live in Long Beach. What the hell is an IP address, not so computer literate mister! And as a matter of fact, I live only a few blocks from where the accident took place and we were driving to rite aid and saw what had happened. Didn't see the actual accident take place but drove by while the man was still laying in the street and there was no yellow blanket over him at that time. Why would I say that I drove by it if I live in Canada like you say???? Get a life!

I feel bad for the cyclists family. But as cyclists we must obey all traffic laws, be a predictable rider, a defensive rider, and observant rider. I see a lot of cyclists with their ipods in their ears running stop signs riding in and out of traffic from street to side walk. Dangerous. I ride and I get pissed off at these people. And then you get these knuckleheads who riding at the beach as if they were training for the Tour De France. If they want to ride that fast they need to ride on the street.

Since the Long Beach makes their money off of trade, tourism, and tickets, it's time for the LBPD to start issuing tickets to these wayward bicyclists. Many cyclists do not follow the rules of the road, such as: they run red lights, ride on the sidewalks, blow through stop signs, and run people over who are walking. Many times I get the "good old American Eagle" from a cyclist who rides in front of my car after blowing through a stop sign when they should have clearly stopped for 3-seconds at an oncoming stop sign.
