At the risk of overstepping my pay grade let me respond for ME, not the Chief of Police. I too am black, and I am sorry you feel you had a negative experience with our department.

Because of what you, an individual, experienced you can now conclude that the Chief does not care about all black people? You further conclude that he must then care about only the white community? So, for all the white people who have "contacted" him and have not yet been "contacted" back, does that mean he doesn't care about white people now too? Or any and every other entire race or community of people who have individuals he has yet to "contact"?

You are a college grad and this is the logical conclusion you have come to? If you were falsely arrested, then file a complaint! This ain't Mayberry RFD...if you talk to the Chief and you still don't "get some type of understanding", then what? If you were falsely arrested, file a complaint!
If the officers were wrong, the Chief will file the complaint. The process is in place. You don't have to talk to the Chief to report misconduct.

If the officers were within their rights and authority to arrest you, then you probably have no complaint (that is my uneducated guess).

But until you actually talk to the Chief, you have not "contacted" him...you have attempted to, you have tried to, you clearly want to, but you have not yet "contacted" him.

Just curious, what could he tell you that would "give you understanding" about your ordeal?

Chief Batts is the Chief of Police for the City of Long Beach. Not just for the black people, or the white people for that matter. The entire racially, culturally, economically diverse city.

I'm truly sorry you had a bad experience, but you are wrong to just verbally accuse the Chief based on your feelings and not facts. I hope you get your situation resolved to your satisfaction, but unless you have a legitimate complaint, I am doubtful that is going to happen.

Doesn't matter who you are, we ALL get bad service on occasion. McDonalds forgets an order of fries with your order. You call corporate and demand to speak to the President, and they take a message. You don't get a call back, was it because you are black? I mean, this is absolutely ludicrous.

In order to successfully get ANY complaint filed, you need to start at the bottom and work your way up. Your first complaint would be to the franchisee, and then work your way up to corporate.

Batts isn't ignoring you because you're black, he's ignoring you because you didn't go through the proper channels, and because HE IS BUSY! His schedule demands that people below him field most of the inquiries and delegate. Any that require his attention eventually make it to him.

You can walk RIGHT ON IN to the PD and file a written preliminary complaint. You would then most likely be contacted by a Sergeant or other higher up to verify your complaint and begin the review process. If necessary, the Chief would eventually get a copy of the report and his input would come into play.

This is typically of large business entity.

Call up George Bush or Arnold Schwarzenegger and see if you get a call back right away. You probably won't, because you're black I guess...

If you are a college grad, and this is the language and grammar you were taught, It's no wonder that Mr. Batts would be dismissive of a negative black stereotype.

And yet your post looks eerily like the rest. Not a comment (according to you) and somewhat judgmental (according to me). Just because someone doesn't do things the way you do them or think they should do them, doesn't make them wrong.

I have yet to read where someone claimed to be perfect, or that they never make mistakes. How come we have so much trouble learning from others who have been there and done that? Obviously some people have better lives than others. Sometimes it IS because of how they do certain things, or the choices they have made.

And the incidents that get commented on the most are exactly because someone's personal beliefs caused them to break the law, usually hurting or killing someone else.

Your philosophy is that of someone who has never paid property taxes, and has no aspirations to do so in the future.

But that's what's so great about the Press Telegram comments section, because for the first time, people who pay property taxes can have a dialog with people who never will.

Aren't you curious about what we think about you? Normally, we'd never give you the time of day, and now, here we are!

Some of us will say you need more government funded programs to raise your unwanted kids that you can't yet afford, some might say keeping their knees together until they were married worked for them. All kinds of new, and interesting ideas!

Since we do pay property taxes and make a lot more money than you--legally--and most of us have never been shot or stabbed, wouldn't you appreciate some pointers on how we made that happen?

Dear Negative Black Stereotype,

You really need to learn about spell checking. We all make typo's, but you have just enough misspellings to appear as if a lot of tax dollars were wasted on your high school diploma, if you have one.

Well, allow me to congratulate you. Many people tend to waste their time in prison, while tending to an emotional garden of bitterness. But you didn't sit around feeling sorry for yourself. You got your degree, and now you can work in some kind of government clerical job, where it's really tricky to fire you, and for that I commend you.

I hope to meet you one day, shake your hand, and pay you what is owed on my parking violation, or electric bill.

The reason this will never stop is because there are too many 'parent' figures who so willingly raise their children to eventually become gang members. Oh right, I know... no one is REALLY a gang member.: wink wink :

It wasn't intended by gangs, but it has happened anyways. There is a culture that glorifies gang related things. Gansta clothing is considered 'cool'. I've seen many parents strolling their children through the malls in the latest Junior Gangsta wear. Rap and Hip Hop have been adopted by gangsters, and many gangsters have now become rap and hip hop artists. Artists, unfortunately, are looked up to by teenagers and young adults. On any given day, you can see that pimped out SUV with the custom rims thumping out hard core gansta rap with 2 babies in car seats in the back.

Many call this their 'culture', their 'identity'. It's what sets them apart from the mainstream. It became so popular, that it might be argued that it BECAME mainstream. What we end up with is mainstream and commercialized GANGSTERS. These media phenoms have the hottest women, the best cars, the best jewelry and money to burn. All this is doing is teaching your children WHERE YOU START. You start by 'looking' and 'acting' like a gangster. These parents simply think their children are properly identifying with a culture.

Then they are amazed when the police bring home their 15 yr old at 3 am and tell these parents their child was caught hanging around known gang members. Utter shock! These kids are out mimicking the life that they have been TAUGHT since birth, a life that says "here's a shortcut to wealth and excess". A life that says "education not necessary, skill not necessary". At this point, a few parents may realize what's going on and try to correct the problem; but it is FAR too late. These parents just gave their local neighborhood street gang a new generation.

And it goes on...

You will never rid a neighborhood of a street gang until you cut off its supply of recruits. You won't cut off the supply, because what gangs identify with, you also identify with, and you teach your children to identify with.

Your local street gang thanks you for your passive contribution. They await your next generation.

The police cannot make the gangs go away until you stop this yourselves. For every gang banger they throw in prison, you contribute 3 more. It's pretty simple math why they are taking over your neighborhood. The police cannot force you to be better parents. It isn't against the law to dress your children like ganstas, listen to gansta music in their presence, or anything else. The police can only take aggressive action once a crime has been committed, and by then, of course, it's too late for the victim of the crime.

What are the odds that a teenage gangster will rise out of the ghetto or the barrio to become a rap or hip hop superstar and rise above his neighborhood? Whatever the odds are, all of the rest of them WILL LOSE. Many will lose their lives, and parents like Darnell's mom will blame the police.

This whole "we're stuck and can't move out" bit is complete BS. Right there in the story it states, "she has since moved for the safety of her remaining family". I guess that says it all, doesn't it? If only she had moved out when she first became aware there was an extremely active gang presence in her new neighborhood. Darnell might have had a chance. At least she realized that in hindsight, and the rest of the family now has a chance. Darnell did good. He taught his family the most valuable lesson, but it cost him his life.

I had no idea the Bixby case involved someone getting involved. From what I recollect (and it's been a long time since that case), it started with some girls trick or treating a house, and as they walked away, some boys said some things to them, they responded, and a fight ensued.

Were the girls able to do the same? Well, I don't know... I don't remember the case down to those details. Were they perps gangsters, and did the girls know FOR SURE they were responding to a gangster, as Darnell knew? I have no idea.
Were the girls as stupid as Darnell for not just ignoring the situation? ABSOLUTELY.
Did the perps in the Bixby case need to be held accountable? Yep. Did the perp in Darnell's murder need to be held accountable? Yep. Were both victims a party to their own eventual assaults? YEP.

For God's sake, give it a rest! Nobody calls people "Negro" anymore, there was no lynching (a very expensive trial was held and the nine teens were found GUILTY), only two of the victims in the Halloween beating were white (the worst hurt with broken facial bones was HISPANIC). There is a lot more to American history than one incident.
