I am still devastated by this fire. I can remember, as a younger child, walking to the G-Store everyday after school and buying something. As I grew older-in the PCS middle school-I would make it a pregame ritual to buy sunflower seeds and gatorade from the G-Store. In 2008, when the first fire happened, I was so upset. But I was also angry, I knew it was arson but they could not find anything to point towards it. When I woke up Monday morning and heard the news I didn't want to believe it. When I drove by it, however, there was nothing I could do BUT believe it. I will admit I cried for sometime and struggled to finish out the day. The G-Store was such a pillar of our town, and I miss it incredibly. To whomever did this.... Why?
Why now?
Why this place?
Why did you do this to our town?
and finally
Why?
To make myself better I can only think that the arsonist-there I have said it-has a deep pathological disorder that made them do this. Because the other possibilities are harder for me to face. Pyromaniacs have been awful in other parts of this country (most older people should remember the arsonists who video-taped their pleasure in setting fires) but it hasn't really been an issue in Vermont-or Putney to be more specific. I don't understand what attracts this person to the corner of Kimball Hill, but from 3-5 years ago when Offerings burned-to last year when the G-Store lost its roof-to this past Sunday when we lost the foundation of our town there is a history of "suspicious" fires.

sounds like you should see your doctor for some nice day pills and move on. all the memories and tears won't get Jack to plant a bean stock there. Nothing is for ever so enjoy your stay while your fortunately alive and make the best of it and stop worrying about your legacy. the VSP FI will get it done and do this kind of overview of the remains that to the average citizen is nonsense. To each their own opinion but get away from the danger and hole before you dreams fall in. Yes that is why the yellow tape is here. No it's not decorations to attract people and stupid questions.

only fools would long for the days of shopping at the corner store and pay high prices at a c-store.

Saving money at the large efficent grocery store means a higher standard of living because people have money for other things. People had little back in the 1950's beyond what they needed to survive and today so called poor people have a higher standard of living than middle class people did in the 1950's.

I paid $5.00 a pound for something at Lisia's Market that sells for $3.00 a pound at BJ's warehouse club and got a better brand also.
People in urban ghetto's complain about not having access to large grocery stores and getting priced gouged by small neighborhood stores and morons in vermont force the rural poor to pay top dollar for basics by blocking big box retailers from opening stores in their counties.

People with some money are still shopping at big box retailers, just driving all sorts of miles to get to them and creating traffic in somebody elses town and all sorts of traffic on the roads as they travel from their home counties to places that have big box retailers.

The rural poor either don't have the transportaion to make long distance trips for supplies or don't have the money to make a trip to stock up worthwhile because they live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to stock up on stuff.

People with money buy a chest freezer and take a trip to a real shopping district and drop hundreds of dollars on supplies every few weeks and poor people get nailed at the glorified warm & fuzzy family run c-store/ general store.

liberals suck

WOW you sure got it right JOE !! Just take a trip up the street to the Saxtons River Village Market and get a first hand look at price gouging, unfortunately JOE vermonters are surely not interested in a higher standard of living , they like to just keep shooting themselves in the foot, thats why I think there's going to be a thriving business for artificial limbs in the future, invest now !!

Well it depends, I do not shop at general stores but also would never shop at BJ's. I would pay top dollar for, say, quality beef not pumped with antibiotics and hormones rather than seaking out whatever beef may put the smallest dent in my wallet. We are a country that prides in spending the smallest % of our income on food however we have the hardest time paying the healthcare bills when the country has a overweight rate of 70% and food related health problems are more common than tabacco related illness.
New England is known for having some of the best food available in the country and Vermont is also one of the top 4 healthiest states in the country along with many other northeastern states at the top of the list.
Many of the educated people I know who have plenty of money would not spend less for low quality food so they have extra for things that are less important. Box food will just cost you more for healthcare in the long run. Shop fresh, buy local.

unhealthy people walk right past the produce department so it's irrelavent whether they shop at a small high priced store or a big box store. There will always be a nitch market for a butcher shop catering to people who want quality.

Most of what people buy is the samething in small stores and big stores, just costs more in the small store, sugar is sugar, Dawn & Tide the same product no matter where it's bought.

Grocery stores have organic products so your only point is the need for a local butcher shop to cater to a nitch market. Those type of places exsist within blocks of major super markets in metropolitian area's. There would always be somebody in a rural county willing to run a butcher shop to cater to the people who want a product like that.

you come across as a upper middle snob that could care less about people just getting by in life. It's all about you and your social group. Food is basicly food all across the country.

The government should double food stamps and raise your taxes to pay for it.

We need places like the Guilford, Vernon, Hinsdale, Putney and other town stores if for no other reason than to deep a sense of community. The community should consist of more than sporting events at the local school and town meeting day. Community general stores bring locals together everyday to meet their neighbors and find out about what is going on in town. Can we really afford to lose personal, face to face connections in our lives? It sure will be a long winter with everyone behind their respective closed doors typing into a computer.

I shop with foodstamps and am rather poor living in my trailer, I still only buy the best food nothing from a box, ever. Do a little research all food is not created equal.
I could suggest a number of books that outline research that has been done on the topic

Except, the town stores employees are one of the worst paid, benefited and disrespected employees' in the whole region.

Many of the owners and managers, hate to say it, but they are foreigners.

Like how many sick days you think these small stores employees get...pension don’t make me laugh. Walmart jobs are better than what these employees got.

Seriously? You are trying to justify burning down the Putney store because welfare is better than being an entrepreneur. Hard work isn't the problem Mike, it's the solution.

"Better" is debatable. Compensation isn't everything.

No, I am just reminding people they are extremely high priced stores with extremely poor working conditions for the employees. It is not a nirvana of altruism and good will for all the town’s people.

I find your assessment highly subjective. I'm sure you were comfortable with your "high-paying" Wal*Mart career, but I doubt you'll find that everybody shares your opinion.

I don't think general stores are some kind of an altruistic mecca, but I would personally work at a general store for minimum wage and no benefits before I even considered working for a chain superstore.

You make the world better by embracing your so called enemies in your loving arms more than by making them outcast and fearing them.
