The nation's top public high school is in Kentucky, according to rankings released Sunday by Newsweek magazine.
The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science, a residential high school on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, topped Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools.
The school, which opened in 2007 and is funded by the state, ranked fifth in Newsweek's 2011 list.
"Being recognized as the top high school in the country by Newsweek at the conclusion of The Gatton Academy's fifth year is a dream come true," Julia Roberts, executive director of the academy, said in a news release.
Schools were ranked based on a variety of measurements, including: graduation rates, college matriculation, Advanced Placement tests per student, average SAT and ACT scores, and average Advanced Placement test scores.
The school's average ACT score was 31.2 out of a possible 36. The average SAT score was 2,010 out of a possible 2,400.
The magazine noted that "nearly all courses are university-level" at The Gatton Academy.
More than half of the school's students engaged in study programs abroad during the previous academic year, and 91 percent of recent graduates participated in a research project sponsored by a university faculty mentor, according to the school.
Students from 107 Kentucky counties have attended the academy since its inception. Enrollment this year is 126.

Funded by the State? I thought you were against that? Are u fer it and against it? Was this "Academy" compared to likeness schools, or....the real world? First you state it's the nation's top, then you state it was ranked #5. Which was it? A school with 126 students? Wow! Most public city schools have more than that in first grade.

I'm sure you'll later make mention of all the "other measurements" used in the comparison won't you? It certainly isn't comparing an Academy with only 126 kids to a general public high school with thousands. But, sounds good!

"Rounding out the top five schools were The School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet (Dallas, Texas), BASIS Scottsdale (Arizona), School of Science and Engineering Magnet (Dallas, Texas), and BASIS Tucson (Arizona).

Newsweek’s methodology for their rankings sought to highlight schools that focus on providing solutions to the challenges of 21st century education and prepare students for both college and life.

Each school’s score is comprised of six components: four-year, on-time graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP or IB scores (10 percent), and AP courses offered (5 percent). Dr. Julia Roberts, executive director of the Gatton Academy, explained that the components of the methodology reflect the high-level learning necessary for successful students in a globally competitive society."

At least Newsweek did state rankings too. Even in Illinois the top ranked school didn't even place in the national rankings.

Hope this helps.

You are still in desperate need of a reading comprehension class, aren't you?
They ranked 5th in the 2011 list and number 1 in 2012 list.

Why do you feel the need to continually put Kentuckians down? Sometimes I think the comprehension problem is not your only problem.
