Pesky gypsy moth out in record numbers this year, state officia...

Hoards of ravenous caterpillars have invaded Ken Klos' home in rural Wonder Lake, infesting his yard and those of his neighbors, who've grown accustomed to the unnerving sound of hungry bugs.

Also plese note that the oak trees won't be kiled by one, or even two infestations, but the infestations grow larger each year and that if you are not diligent in an early spraying program you will lose your Oak trees. HEre in hawthorn Woods we hoping to havae aerial spraying done next May when the caterpillars are stil small enough. Good luck everyone - we love Oak Trees and do not want to see our neighborhoods deforested.

The spraying is very effective. I'm in Spring Grove - and on my lot the oaks were about a third defoliated about 5 years ago. McHenry county sprayed us the next spring, and I've seen very few since.. although I have seen a couple this year. Nice side effect - it gets rid of mosquitoes for about half the summer as well.

If you throw a handful of gypsy moth catepillers at the person standing next to you, they stick.

Lake Forest (west) is covered. I can hear them eating and there are branches/leaves all over my yard when this little pests eat away at the beautiful trees in my yard. I have a lot of tress and they are mostly overgrown this season, so at least I won't have to pay to get them trimmed. ;)

Those of you in communities that have aerial spraying done - does your village pay or do you? Do you know the cost per resident? Hawthorn Woods is being very difficult to impossible to convince that this is worth doing. They say they have no money. Does that soudns like any governor we know???

My neighborhood too has been infested with these horrible things. I tried last summer to get some help from anyone but to no avail. Even our homeowners association said you are on your own. I've contacted an ariel aprayer. Last year the cost was $43 per acre per spray. Minimum I think was 50 acres in 5 acre lots.

Hopefully by Sept I can get most of the neighbors to give money towards spraying next year. My oaks and other trees were defoliated within two weeks from the caterpillars. Now the moths are coming out and it is something out of a Sci Fi movie when you go outside.

Good luck

Good luck.
