I hope he sues for a wrongful conviction and wins the judge was way out of line in this case.

Why not purse the case against the cop? Most of those cops from Chicago are just thugs with badges. Just like the Abbate cover-up, lets get them all.

I would still like to hear the full story on the Tribune. All of the pieces I have seen have suppressed many of the details, like the officer walking into a party and refusing to pay for the beer he drank, then he took a stole a cell phone to prevent a person from the party from calling the police. I also find interesting that with "one punch" he broke the guys lower jaw, his nose and cracked the back of his skull.
Of course none of these details were ever relevant to the tribune who told the one sided story of how the innocent officer was randomly jumped by a guy for no reason at all and he was just trying to defend himself and get away. I am not saying this guy deservers 5 years in prison, he definitly does not, but the tribunes intentionally suppressing most of the incident doesn't give readers a full story. Anyone who is interested in this case should try to find other sources to get the full story... |

This just shows the ignorance of the Iowa Atty General, trying to make a name for himself. People have done horrible things and walked out of jail the next day. This officer was unfairley treated by the justice system he has sworn to protect....Its a shame for him to be treated like this.

This story is concerning. I too think there is more then we are reading. And why did Mayor daley write a letter for this guy along with Dick Devine and others? I know the dad works for Dick Devine, so that might explain it.
I think this cop did do something. I agree 5 years seem stiff, but time served seems fair. The real concern comes in with J-Fed saying this guy can have his job back. I see a lawsuit by some citizen in the future clkaiming Officer Mette viloated his rights.... |

Like John, I too would like to see the full story played out in a single location, preferably in the Tribune. The story would address such issues as the conduct and, if documented, the inebriation of Mette, whether any money actually changed hands at the home, whether any beer was actually consumed at the home, what really happened to the cell phone (it was never found), the inebriation of the victim (his BAC was measured at greater than .2 at the hospital), the actual extent of his injuries (he shot his best round of golf ever less than five days after the incident), and what contact his family, a state-contracted trucking firm, might or might not have had with investigators and prosecutors. There also is the question, in my mind, of how the judge could write in her ruling that Mette was not the aggressor and in fact was leaving the scene and had been pushed multiple times before the punch was thrown, and still manage to find him guilty of a felony.
Mette was no angel, I'm reasonably sure of that, but his alleged victim was no innocent bystander either. Truth be told, almost none of the news value of this story can be found in the fight itself. The questions that need to be answered surround why Mette, with the facts of the case muddled and murky, was charged with a felony, found guilty of a felony and sent to prison for five years for throwing one punch after being pushed several times. I would add that similar attention should likely be given to any such case with such a disparity between the facts and the punishment, whether a police officer is involved or not. |

Well let's hope the CPD has the good sense not to reinstate someone who lied to the Iowa police. This hothead would be nothing but a liability for the people of Chicago.

For those looking for some documents. Here is a court document I was able to find regarding the decision by the Iowa Appeals Court.

To the Dubuque police, prosecutor, and judge:
Thank you for treating Michael Mette like an ordinary citizen and not a cop who is above the law. To understand how Chicago protects its own, another off-duty Chicago cop killed two young men with his SUV while speeding home in the wrong lane from a bar. A local judge dropped DUI charges until a video showed the off-duty officer taking numerous drinks at a bar moments before the accident. Without video, there is little hope the police are held accountable here. If we had a video of the Michael Mette incident, perhaps it would explain how one miraculous punch could do so much damage to a young kid trying to retrieve his cell phone. Of course, that was Mette's third alibi after initially blaming the victim for his own injuries. If these clowns try to sue for unlawful imprisonment, I hope you fight it and fight it hard to bring out the full facts of this case. http://www.chicagopublicradio.org/Content.asp... |

I was really on the cop's side here until I started reading some of the other comments of questions. But what turns me off about him is Daley supporting him. Anything Daley is for, I'm against. I don't like this anti- 2nd amendment mayor and where do we stand with him and not being able to own a gun in Chicago. Is he going to abide by the supreme court or use your tax money to fight a losing cause.

Mette wil get his job back and be welcomed by the other officers as a conquering hero. Any financial difficulties will be offset by fundraisers where police officers and prosecutors drink to excess and drive home getting stopped, "flipping their button" and being sent on their merry way. Mette will be given a spot in the new unit replacing SOS(sons of supervisers) called MSF(Mette's Safe Finally) and all will be back to normal on the god ol' CPD.

It's a shame that the police aren't held to the same laws as us common folk. If this were one of us - we'd still be in jail.
I can't wait for my next jury duty summons - I'm going to answer all their questions the way they'd like to hear them - but all along I am going to vote against any cop or arrest he made - guilty or not - let'm go free. |
||||
|
As some of you think, all cops aren't bad, some are. Most of the time, I am on the cop's side until something changes my mind. I would not be on a jury with predetermined ideas that the cop is in the wrong.
|
||||
Technically - you shouldn't be on anyone's side. |

He looks like a scumbag to me, He should not be a police officer!!
|

And why do you say that, don't let the address fool you. You might just not know as much about me as you think.
