LAKE, W.Va.(WSAZ)-- A woman is in the hospital with what's believed to be severe injuries after becoming a target for a pack of wild dogs Monday night.

It happened at about 9 p.m. on Millcreek Mountain near Lake in Logan County.

The dogs are no stranger to the area, but this is the first time they've been known to bother anybody.

George Underwood is the chief at the Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Monday night, a man showed up at his door saying there was an emergency at the top of the mountain.

“It was unbelievable,” Underwood said.“I've never seen anything like that before.”

He arrived to find a woman in a ditch beside the road. The skin had been ripped off much of her face.

“She was just telling me not to leave her, because she was real scared,” Underwood said.“She was in a lot of pain.”

Still able to speak, she also told Underwood how more than a dozen dogs attacked her and ran back into the woods.

Owen Peyton, who lives at the foot of the mountain, says he heard the dogs hours after the attack.

“I've been told that they have come around here before, but now last night's the first time I’ve heard them in this neighborhood,” Peyton said.

According to Underwood, the mountain has been home to the dogs for many years, but they may not be welcome there much longer.

“They usually stay in the same spot up there all the time, but I never did dream that they'd do something like that,” he said.

Underwood also says he's planning to make some calls to different animal agencies to see what can be done about the pack of dogs.

In the meantime, he says people should avoid walking in that area after dark.

There's still no word on the woman's name or condition.

Logan EMS officials say she was taken to CAMC General Hospital in Charleston.

Underwood says her injuries seemed severe but not life threatening.

What was Emma Jude doing walking alone along the road at 9pm? Does she live near there? Something doesn't sound right. Somethings missing in this story.

They are wild dogs... I live real close to where this happened..Emma is from Logan, but she dates a man named James that lives over toward hewett. She was walking home and the dogs atacked her. She had 9 hours of surgery Tuesday. He face will never be the same. Draper boy you don't have a clue to what you're talking about. They're not coyotes, they're wild dogs. Wild dogs are vermin. There can be no PETA cure for them. They must be destroyed as humanly as possible. That generally done with a shot through the ear. I have done so in the past and still feel justified in doing so.
