I'm a former teacher of the South Redford School District. Thurston HS is a tough place, and the teachers ARE afraid of the students. The few teachers who are not afraid and who desire to make a difference, are told to turn a blind eye toward the problems or else they will get the boot. The behavior of the students and the problems in general make it a borderline inner-city type of a school. Any parent in the South Redford District would be very wise to take advantage of the "school of choice" program and to send his/her child to a Livonia school.

I went to CC, which used to be located right across 96. This is about 15 years ago. We ran track there and it seemed fine then. I heard that Redford has changed a lot though. CC moved farther west. Too bad for old Redford.

Public schools are ridiculous. Put the Priests in charge! If they caught you looking the wrong way they'd throw you out on your ass. The result? A nice school with almost zero disciplinary problems.

The violence will always follow a certain color. Some try to escape it by moving further away, but they just keep coming. It's like a plague that you cant escape. The only way to destroy it is to ban together as they do. But that will never happen because you all too yellow.

Blacks always bring a school or city down. It is their nature to destroy their surroundings and the good people around them.

I started seeing evidence of this when I was in school. It is much worse now.

You're in high school and your grammar is that bad? I suggest you pick some more English classes.

Of course you don't think it's true, because it's natural behavior to you. What comes natural doesnt seem wrong. But those who do act in a more civilized manner can spot the problems and disruptions easily.

It's like taking the family to church and then afterwards to the zoo. Once the zoo closes for the night, most people go home, whereas, other certain groups could easily never leave, just fitting right in.

Based on your grammar, education is no longer Thurston's #1 priority. It's crowd control.

I know that things are getting out of control in Redford and especially Thurston. We moved out to avoid our daughters having to go to Thurston. Pierce was good when Mr White was there but when he left and they brought the other guy in (Riggs? cant remember) he couldnt keep control anymore. It starts there and continues into Thurston. Its a real shame as it wasnt like this when my kids started kindergarten at Fisher years ago.

Good comments, but does anyone (other than me) see that nearly every single comment contains incorrect spellings (often multiple instances in a posting)?

From the "educated" Black woman with the educated husband, to many others.

I'll leave it to you to researchers to construct the white/black error tally. It might be a useful statistic.

MEAP score reductions? How about just getting basic English usage right!

Thurston may not be the safest school it was 30yrs, but neither is any Livonia highschool, Farmington school, or even West Bloomfield. I am an African American male that graduated in 2008 and can honestly say Thurston probably saved my life. If it wasn't for me going to Thurston I would have never got such a great education and probably would not be in college now. I'm just one of many young men that excaped the Detroit Public School system and got a higher education at Thurston. Due to Thurston's great mentors I have a greater drive to be successful in life. Where as race is concerned, it has nothing to do with the violence or low test scores. I've seen more white students drop out while I was there than blacks honestly. The problem lies with the way youth, in general, are being raised today, not race.

Hell, any other school would have sufficed other than a Detroit Public School.

You may have seen more whites drop out most likely due to the higher ratio of whites to black. Keeping the ration in perspective, the percentage could still be equal, if not greater.

I mostly agree with the parental guidance in today's society. Many parents should have never had children. Children are being raised as weak victims. Parents do not want others (teachers, relatives, etc.)to partake in parenting their children, yet they fail to properly cultivate them. The increased divorce rate allows children to play each parent against one another and neither parent wants to be the bad guy, resulting in constant leniency and spoiling brats. They fight the system to allow their child an easy access throughout their young life then wonder why they crack when encountering the real world as an adult. Technology doesn't help when these lazy brats sit all day on computers, play video games, talk on cell phones, etc. and parent's do nothing about it. As this trend continues, the young adults who breed will inject the same seed in their children resulting in a downward spiral. It's a pathetic sight with a pathetic outcome. I don't envy society's future.

And shame on you for making it sound like the problem is completely to be blamed on the white children and their parents for supposedly bringing them up to be racist. Also, the pity me attitude of how the black children are supposedly being treated so badly and the white kids are really the ones to be blamed. As a lifelong resident, I find this whole racist thing to be unacceptable. Remember the saying "it takes two"? Let me just say that the presence of black kids in the schools is quite intimidating. Let's face it, when white people must drive into Detroit, how many do not feel safe? Do the black people feel that way in Redford? We have gone from 0 black families years ago, to quite a large presence to date. On my street alone, many black families have moved in, including right here on my block. One family I can speak of seems quite friendly and appear to be "quite at home", which is good. Yet another black family also just a few doors down installed bars on their windows and doors shortly after moving in. Another black family close to my home just moved in a few months ago and yet they don't ever seem to come out of their home. People should be free to live where they want, yet if you know that a community is predominately white and you know you will not be comfortable why move their? Children of all races are being raised to have little respect for others, but since there has been an increase in black families why has the crime rate gone up? This is a fact that cannot be ignored.
