No one seriously doubts the incredible value of teaching Shakespeare.
Yet, there is a valuable lesson students like Ms. Hoffman can and should take from the inept and irresponsible manner in which Shakespeare & Co.'s board of trustees and corporate officers managed to mismanage the organization's finances these past few years. In 'Hamlet', Shakespeare warned: "Neither a borrower nor a lender be; for loan doth oft lose both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry." Students at S & Co. should undertake to understand just exactly how the profligate organization ended up in such a dismal financial mess. What better way for those students to discover for the future how to avoid repeating similar scenarios in their own lives. |
