Been living in Pa for about 12 years now..and for the life of me,,,i have no idea why school taxes are so expensive. What does this money go towards..and how is it decided how much each family pays. Perhaps IF PA lowered the school tax.. there wouldnt be as many foreclosures. I think most people can afford a house, until you add in the crazy amont of taxes. If anyone can help me undertand why they are high,,and where the money goes...i would appreciate it.

School Taxes are most definately a Ripp Off in Pa. If they were'nt wasted and really used for things the schools actually need they would not be near as rediculous!

perhaps to get the correct answer go to the school district and ask to see their budget. It is public information. I don't think its right to have to pay school taxes after you have no children in school or evern better when you retire. I will admit that Southwestern School taxes are lower than many districts. Please do not say taxes are cheaper in Maryland because the are not or so many people would not move up to Pennsylvania.

Where do you think they get the money to operate the school systems in MD?

I don't think anyone will argue with your point that taxes are higher in PA than they are in some other places. Unfortunately, if you want to live in PA right now, these are the taxes you will have to pay. Are the school, and other taxes, spent wisely? You can make good arguments on both sides of this topic so obviously, the correct answer is somewhere in the middle between yes and no. Our elected representatives are the only people that can make any changes to the system, good, bad, or otherwise. It's up to them, the only thing we can do is go to the polls and vote for whomever we think will do the best job at changing the system to a way that is more to our liking.
Until then, the only choices we have are to pay the taxes or move.

Again go to the School Board meetings and voice your opinion. If you can't take the time to go and be placed on record as speaking out don't complain.

Taxes may not seemm higher in MD but they are. In addition to your state income tax, add 50% to 60% of your state income tax for a "piggyback tax" for the counties.

MD takes all the tax money, and then redistributes it from the rich counties to the poor counties and the city.

Maryland is also rich in user fees for everything, and impact fees on new construction that adds literally thousands of dollars to new homes.

PA used to be cheaper, but in the 1990's there was a large influx of Marylanders and the local governments saw the deep pockets of the new residents.

Just wait until it costs $16 to cross the Bay Bridge.

The Obamaphiles referenced above are the generational welfare families that would rather collect their money off the backs of the working families than go out and get a job on their own.

Why is everyone comparing PA and MD. MD is a pointless shithole of the universe. No one cares about MD and everyone BUT Illegal invaders are trying like hell to get the hell out. PA taxes are high, work to change that put effort into it or stop bitching. I pay roughly $8500 a year in property taxes. I can stand it but I'd pay double that just not to live in MD.
