Profit margins are so slim in the food industry right now because of how much the price of food has risen. I think the general rule of thumb is people that use those coupon books Only go there because they are getting something cheaper, and the reality is no matter how good the meal is, they probably wont go back if they have to pay full price. Its the whole Walmart mentality. That is pure nonsense. If you have ever been in business, I'll bet you failed, huh? Here is where you are missing the boat: 1.) When profit margins are slim, like in the restaurant industry, you fix that with increased traffic. There is only one way to increase traffic, and that is ADVERTISING, as in ... coupon books!(In the case of certain restaurants, you can also increase margins by raising sales at the bar, which is pure profit ... but that has drawbacks too). 2.) Those coupon books are sold through two major channels: first to people who like to dine out a lot and who like to travel around the area trying new places, and secondly as a fund-raiser to people who support various causes. In both cases, the coupon books are winding up in the hands of affluent, active people. That is exactly the demographic that supports restaurants, so annoying a person that comes into your establishment with one of those coupons is just plain foolishness. That said, preferred coupon etiquette is to present the coupon when you order, to prevent awkward moments like the one in this thread.

Its the whole Walmart mentality. Wrong wrong wrong wrong and wrong. First of all, the new owner is benefiting from the previous owner's investment in the advertising coupon book. The NEW owner didn't spend a dime -- the OLD guy did, but now the NEW guy benefits from increased traffic. And people certainly DO go back after trying a restaurant because they spotted it in the book. We are an example. We tried the Minar Indian restaurant on French Rd in Utica several years ago because of a coupon in a book; otherwise we probably never would have through to try it -- in fact, we barely knew it existed. SINCE THEN we have been back dozens of times! Minar is a wonderful place, on Tuesday & Wednesday they have a buffet that is just tremendous. Recommended!

Great Customer Lost wrote: I went to dinner here last week with a coupon that was in a discount booklet that is sold in the mohawk valley area. The coupon was for a free meal (up to a $10.00 value). I have not been to this restaurant before, i knew it was under new ownership and i thought i would give it a try. after having dinner there with a family member, i presented the coupon to the waitress prior to receiving the bill. she stated to me that she didnt think they took this coupon but would check. when she came back to my table she stated that the owner said that he does NOT honor this coupon because the restaurant is under new ownership. I thought that this was very wrong of the owner to refuse to accept this coupon.
1st i would like to say that i feel that the owner should have had something posted near the entrance of the restaurant that these coupons will NOT be honored there due to new ownership and there was not. i look on my way out to see if there may have been a sign i missed but there was not.
2nd you would think that since he was just starting out with the new restaurant he would honor the coupon to bring in new business, I guess not. it was a mere $10.00 on a bill that was $84.00! the meal in question for the discount was 24.00. so the coupon only covered less that half the amount of one of the meals!
i would think that if he was any kind of business owner, especially in the food industry, he should have honored the coupon that night and explained that he would no longer accept any future coupons of this kind....that would have been the admirable thing to do. but i guess not on his part. I will NEVER go back. He lost a possible returning customer over $10.00. very greedy and selfish of him.
I dont think this restaurant will last. it was a terrible impression and a sign of a greedy owner. I think maybe he just wants the golfers to patronize his business...good luck with all those golfers..i guess they must be beating down his door to get in....it wont be me for sure. That's the problem with you back ass Country Bumpkins! You think everything should be free and then you wonder why businesses close wvery damn week. Pay your bill and move on!!

Next time ask first if the coupon is accepted, who doesn't do that?
When the owner says "no it's not accepted" then you can get back in your '95 Silverado (yokels are cheap but think nothing of driving gas guzzling monsters) and head over to Applebees where they'll serve bland food and accept your coupon. Yokels expect everything to be free!!

First of all, start up costs for a restaurant are incredible. The BEST run restaurants in the US run a 20% profit margin. I can guarantee this guy would be lucky to hover around 8-10%. customers like you eat at McDonalds anyway if you're gonna let $10 get your panties in a bunch. I do believe in good faith gestures however, especially in a small town where word of mouth is everything! Was the food good?

Actually, I go out toi much. Need to "drop a few." in retrospect, I take back my initial comments especially in a small town. If you tell 10 people and they tell 10 people..... The new owner will wish he had honored your coupon. PS, I also use coupons on occasion. Why not??
