The police in Paterson are corrupt as the criminals. If you ever get in trouble in Paterson don’t call the police.

To Jersey Boy it seems to me that you are a bit racist and it's scary because you were a Paterson police officer. How could you have worked around people that you evidently don't care for. As an African American woman living in Paterson I will be the 1st person to admit that many of us make things harder for ourselves but their are alot of hard working people that deserve to be treated with respect and get help when we need it. The reality is alot of Paterson police think like you and it causes more tension within our community.

Jersey Boy you are a bitter man. Why are you so mad. This is only a discussion, damn! If you hated working in Paterson so much why did you serve on the force for so long. I am sure you will only respond back with more bitter and hateful remarks but go ahead because I don't care, this is a free country and you are entitled to your opinion. I will just not give you the benefit of fueling your hate off of what I say. I would hope noone else would give you the pleasure of responding either.

NJ has three types of people. Cops, Criminals and victims, which one are you? Out here in Tucson we have the right to carry (guns). That stops most of the scumbags cold! People, get some of your rights back. Some advice from an old Paterson boy, good luck. |

I moved to Tucson from Paterson 32 years ago.The laws in N.J. back then made three classes of people. The Police, the criminal and the victim. Here in Tucson
I have a conceled carry permit which takes me out of the victim class.I sure hope for all of you that you can get some laws changed to get you out of the victim catagory also. Good luck! sorry for the bad spelling, its late. |

It really hurts to hear about the place that I was born and raised in, how it has become to rough and hard to live there. I have no regrets of relocating to the south in 1988, I can remember, when we were able to leave our doors unlock at night, and the police were friendly, my uncle was the first police seargent of Paterson(Bobby Ward) I never thought that I would say that I was afraid to come home and visit. I am glad that I took my three sons out of Paterson, Lord knows what type of individuals they might have become. I grew up there on Matlock Street in the CCP projects(which no longer exist) Thank God, I am a nurse, one of my sons is a First Class Seargent who did 2 tours in Irag, my middle son is a computor specialist, and my youngest son does General Labor, I am also an inspiring writer, I definitely have alot to say about my hometown(Paterson) I pray for all Patersonians, and there safety. Home is definitely not home there anymore, the things that I read about Paterson are disheartening, when people ask me where I am from, I hold my head down and say Paterson, NJ. There was a time when I shouted, "I am from Paterson, New Jersey, the silk city"

Lived near Belmont Avenue and West Broadway going back into the 50s. Left in 1964 and have returned only for brief family visits. Paterson never changes. I have been in all 50 states and lived in 4 besides New Jersey. Nothing I have visited approaches Paterson for sheer misery, lack of pride and self respect, utter filth, political corruption, and dead end existence than Paterson. I attend a funeral there back in March and rode from the funeral home to the cemetery in Totowa thru areas that reflected all those things I have mentioned. I have been in some of the poorest parts of the United States and much of Mexico. Paterson wins as the place I would regard as the worst example of American civilization. |

Years of liberalism and corrupt politicians = PATERSON. There are other towns on the same path.
When you over-populate a town and creat the "inner city", prepare for high crime, high unemployment, drugs, street gangs, car jacking, mugging, murder, poor public education, welfare families, junkies and worse. Albert Einstein said it best "You cannot solve a problem with the same mindset that created it." New Jersey is run by liberal Democrats. The Republicans have not been such angels either. Both parties have used their positions to make their lives better and made some really bad choice for the people they were elected to serve. This state has become a political joke and a cesspit for piss poor politicians. |

The buyers of our parents' house just outside Paterson are a black family that have lived near the Passaic River around West Broadway. Their aim is simple. Get out of Paterson with their kids, get away from living in fear and filth, and actually see their kids get a decent education. It used to be called "white flight," but in truth it is just "flight." Anyone with an opportunity to be elsewhere finds their way out. And it will be that way until someone has the guts ... knowing there will be a price on their head ... to bring the hammer down on all the political corruption and citywide crime. Is there anyone in Paterson with that kind of courage? |

Christina, not all of Paterson is a hell hole. There are still good neighborhoods. Downtown is another story. Much of Main Street has been changed by the influx of Middle Eastern markets and store fronts that actually have improved the area in appearence. However, after the 911 events seeing the Arabic signage on many of these businesses give the appearence that you are in the Middle East rather than Paterson. The drugs, prostitution, crime and street gangs are there. I'd proceed with caution for safety sake. There are sites such as The Great Falls and The Paterson Museum, Thomas Rodgers Building on Market Street. The Paterson Market on Railroad Avenue if you like to shop for fruit & vegetables and other things. It has it's problems but it has it's charm as well. Used to be a great industrail city, but much of the business has left. High unemployment and inner city blight don't make it too attractive for most people, but if you have family there you still need to visit. My best advice is to stay where it's busy and avoid driving or walking around at night. Be aware of your surroundings and enjoy the visit.

I have moved to the south, I often spend time in paterson visiting my family. It is very easy to see that the police force is corrupt and the mayor of paterson is a joke. There are three existing laws, One against the people, One for the Political arena, and one that supports the Hispanic store and buisness owners. Paterson has become nasty and dirty, there are still good people their but the mayor and his troops are dirty.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE PATERSON, I WAS BORN AND RAISED THERE ON ALBION AVE IN THE 50'S AND 60'S MOVED OUT OF PATERSON IN THE LATE 80'S. I LIVE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, BUT GO HOME EVERY YEAR, THE CITY IS FALLING APART, IF THEY HAD ANOTHER MAYOR LIKE FRANK X GRAVES, IT MIGHT DO SOME GOOD. THE HISTORIC CITY IS AND EYESORE, AND IT SHOULD BE RETURNED TO ITS GLORY, MANY OTHER CITIES HAVE. BUT POOR POLITICS AND CORRUPTION HAVE RUINED IT. GOD BLESS PATERSON, AND I HOPE I WILL ONE DAY IT WILL TURN BACK TO THE GREATEST CITY IT ONCE WAS.

anyone ever hear of a sodomist/rapist that cruised Belleville in 1997 in a yellow jeep CJ ? He targeted hookers/drug users. He had blonde hair and Jersey plates.

i am deeply saddened and inspired by the many nasty comments as well as the good memories shared here.First i would like to say if you look into any inner city with has such a diversity, no political structure, and crime and we can say its just like Paterson. The police are corrupt the politicians are pursuaded and lawlessness is inspired by these such issues.I was born in Hack,nj and have watched that town go down also,Bergen county just has a unique way of persuading the eye with very small or next to none news coverage.Teaneck is also the same as well as Saddlebrook and dont forget(racist)Garfield. One thing i can say about paterson there isnt enough outlets for working class citizens.I have lived in this town for over 30yrs i have a career, education outlook and inspiration all driven by me not the demigraphics of a town.Paterson should not be blamed for the garbage that has settled here but for the character of its citizens and there are some good one's left.As for the out-of-towners i also have rental property in Warrington,Va and suffolk Va as well as a pottery business in Warrington.I graduated in 1986 from Eastside High under Joe clark and Lean on me was a hollywood depiction of a great educator slash activist. And it was a total over exaggeration.Last but not least the drug epidemic has been fueled with the middle and upper class kids, parents, politicians and police that infiltrate Paterson everyday looking to get a fix then seclude back to the suburbs. Before you judge a town look at the blotter of how many people that dont live in Paterson get caught in Paterson up to no good.
