I thought this would be a great topic for this forum. Especially with the accusations flying around about posters on this board.

This is a very interesting story. I wonder with the sexting, videos of violence and forums being totally removed, how long will it take for the gov't to start regulating the internet!

Me too! That could be a landmark case to make all people register onto any forum. But she should go after the forum itself NOT the actual poster. As you can see, I'm not a GOP supporter but goverment getting involed in chat rooms spats because someone is thin skinned is ridiculous.

I know it involves a minor, but you would be shocked about facebook. The kids are really wild on that thing. Just another way for the gov't to slip in for regulation and tax on internet shopping.(Thumbs down)

I know a young girl that got fired from her job working with the elderly for what she said on her Facebook. She said she was getting tired of the patients hitting her and that some of the RN's were lazy. They actually told her she was being fired for what she said on Facebook.

That's crazy!! How did her employer find out? That's like someone getting fired for writing in their diary. Okay, okay....I'm dating myself.

I've been hearing on the "cable chatter" that now job recruiters are using google and facebook in background checks. That's why they are advising to be extra careful what you post on Facebook or blogs, and your own websites.

It's common knowledge that most employers now check you out on the net before hiring, or even check you out after hire.

They will and do check your myspace and facebook accounts to see what kind of friends you have on your buddies list. What kind of comments you leave or have posted. They check out your pictures and everything you make public.

I say, don't be stupid, think about what you post. And that really goes for any site. Between new employers, you have dept of homeland security and fbi fusion centers that check people out. They have a Lone Wolf department that makes dossiers on outspoken patriotic types, or real terrorists. And you better start planning for the end of the First Ammendment now, meaning, if this hate crimes legislation passes, it will be retro-active up to 7 years. Meaning, if this bill passes, anything you said or did up to 7 years ago, they will hold you to the fire for it. Think about it, this is screwed up, but true none the less.

Last note, make fake facebook and myspace accounts that paint you as a saint. Make all of your intrests and hobbies volunteer work for underprivilidged or the elderly. All your pics will be fully clothed and nothing sexual, rowdy or extremist. Don't have multiple fourms full of anti government sentiment with a picture of you and your guns, you get it? I say, create a profile just to give them all something nice to look at. Beat em at their own game!!!!

She was so shocked she didn't think to ask how they got into her Facebook. Plus her normal hours that day was 7A to 4PM so, of course, they didn't inform her that she was being fired until 2PM and then they made her leave the premises. Her firing had nothing to do with her job performance. I think she knows now that she will have to watch what she says on her Facebook.

I can see employers doing a credit check but I guess even at that what does it tell them? A person that is out of a job and looking for work would probably have credit problems.

I would like to know HOW her employer to into her Facebook in the first place. Don't you have to be "invited" before you can access someones Facebook? She said she had "friends" at work and I think that might have been the problem. I say NEVER make a co-worker a friend. Be civil and cordial at work, but don't EVER discuss or include a co-worker in your personal life. If there's ever a disagreement between you they are the first that will stab you in the back at work!

Yeah....I agree BUT why give 'em anything? Can't you just say you don't have an account? A relative of mine only uses her middle name for her Facebook account. Of course she doesn't give out her middle name.

But I agree on the pictures. You might not have an account but someone else whom you took a picture with might. Thanks to the internet, the 6 degrees of separation has been shortened.

A motivated HR person would have a login name and password for facebook. Perhaps no profile, but at least the ability to login and see others.

Additionally, many people use their real names when creating a profile. I've never used my real name or address on any web page, web mail or web anything, ever. Not much on vanity pages either. Kinda feel it's for teenage girls, but it seems to have taken off and older folks use it too now. So it's easy for anyone to Google anyones name now and you'd be surprised what popps up.
Anyone here ever google yourself?

I wanted to make a point to my girlfriend, I googled her name, every group, discussion forum, activism site and everything she's ever done, can be found by google. I showed her how everything she's done on the net since 1998 shows up. Sorta….quite a bit anyway.
Even shows comments she's left on other peoples social sites. She said she doesn’t care and not doing anything anyway. So we googled my name. Thank goodness very little comes up for me, I always use nicknames, but I type my full name and there a lot of people out there with my full name. Kinda cool actually, hard to tell who is who. I like being lost in the crowd.

I've always been big on my privacy, you should be too. Identity theft or jerkwad employers that feel like they need to "check you out".

Hey boss, I work for you from 8 to 5. You pay me to do a service during these hours. And when I leave your office, MY TIME IS MY OWN AND I'LL DO AS I PLEASE. I DO NOT WORK FOR YOU AFTER 5, I DO NOT REPRESENT YOUR COMPANY EITHER. I'M ON MY TIME NOW. MINE!!!! You wan't to pay me over a 24 hour period, then I'll consider your BS. I have a real problem with companies that think they own you and can tell you what you can and cannot do on Your Own Time!!!!

I googled the girls name and got her profile on Facebook, but I couldn't find anyway to get in and see what she was saying. I did however find out her mother is also on Facebook. I'm sure she's learned her lesson, it's just too bad she had to learn it the hard way. I totally agree with your last paragraph!

I agree! What you do on your own time that you're not getting paid for is personal business. You know how "suit happy" we can be. Someone is just waiting to take an employer to court for something like that, and it will be a landmark case. An employer has to be careful not to go to far. Actually, I think the young lady FL was referring to has a solid case to me.

I told her when she applied for unemployment to tell them the reason she was given for being fired was due to what she said on her Facebook. I also told her to make it clear that they "hacked" into her Facebook the she neither invited them nor gave them permission to access her Facebook. However, what would the case be if they gained access thru a co-worker that she had invited as a "friend" I think they call it?

Was she able to get unemployment? I feel like the young lady was a scapegoat. I could understand if she was on the Facebook during business hrs, and it prevented her from doing her job. They might have not liked what she said but it was her PERSONAL Facebook page which shouldn't be used against her professionaly.

Like they say...that sucks!!!!!

She hasn't gotten a determination yet from unemployment. However, they have her going to meetings regarding job hunt etc., etc. I told her to call them and find out why they're requiring her to do all this when they haven't said yet whether she is eligible for benefits or not. She's never gotten any warnings about unsatisfactoy work performance, but they did talk to her once about an unexcused absence. However, none of that was mentioned when she was fired. I told her if she's denied benefits she should appeal the decision. What's she got to lose? You're right, it does suck!!

She has gotten a couple of checks but now has been notified that her employer is appealing. She has several co-workers who have agreed to stand up for her, if necessary, and vouch that she was the best worker they had and the best trainer. She was always picked to train new employees. She's never been repimanded for poor performance. I think the employer is just spinning their wheels. Of course, she will have to pay back any money she's received if her employer should win their appeal though I really don't think they have a leg to stand on.

Just taking care of a little business. LOL No, I haven't heard from STANFORD. Maybe he's just waiting for things to start happening with DP again. Everyone is fine as far as I know. There just hasn't been much going on here lately. Lots of local stuff, but since I'm not local I don't have a clue what everybody's talking about. How have you been? I see you changed your name again. LOL Hope you had a fun Halloween!

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Aries

Don't get embroiled in a bad-tempered skirmish today, for it might turn into more than that if you aren't careful. Everyone seems to be ratty and argumentative, but once you let the first spat take place it's effectively declaring open season. Even though things seem out-of-joint, keep your lines of communication open.
