In industrialized democracies, unions are there to keep Capitalists in check, otherwise Capitalists would be always thinking short-term how to maximize value for investors. Workers need to live in the long term. If things work out fairly, investors make a profit and workers have a steady job with a living wage.
But many jobs have left industrialized democracies for the third-world, where workers lack the basic sorts of protections that are common in western democracies, such as limits on the length of the work-day and the work-week, plant safety, and the benefits that unions get for their workers, such as health-care packages.
Labor is much much much cheaper in the third world. However, the real enemy of the union worker in the USA is not the non-union worker, or the third-world exploited worker, but the high cost of health-care here in the US. If we didn't have companies making exorbitant profits on health care INSURANCE, health care costs would be much lower here, and it wouldn't be so expensive for companies to hire union workers. In other civilized countries, insurance companies make their money selling fire insurance and car insurance and other kinds of insurance, but by law they are NOT-FOR-PROFIT when it comes to health insurance.

Holy guano Batman, a real answer. Nicely done. I continue to believe that that the above information held true 40-50-60 years ago but that the above information does not hold true today with the current stats/laws/experiences/example s/etc......

Union negotiated higher wages, retirement and other perks aren't free. They come at the employer expense. Often, a new company that is still getting its feet wet is forced under by the expense of union contracts. The union doesn't care as long as they get paid while the plant is running. Unions assume that the business owner is evil and doesn't want to help the employee. A company that has even a modest track record of treating their employee well will historically fare better without a union; with the employees also better off in the end.
