$4-a-gallon gas hurts more in rural U.S.

Gasoline prices reached a national average of $4 a gallon for the first time over the weekend, adding more strain to motorists across the country.

I luv to drive in my Durango SUV and I'll never give it up no matter how high gasoline goes. I feel protected with a lot of steel around me. If I get into an accident I know the other guy will most likely get the worst of it. And, I can also seat another 6 people in the Durango; but, usually I drive alone on my commute. We still have some of the cheapest gasoline in the world and we should really stop complaining so much.

So you wouldn't give up your Durango if gasoline were $1,000 per gallon? That's mighty foolish.

Good thing you "feel protected" and drive alone on your commute. None of these statements are trolling comments. The fact that vehicles like that are often more dangerous to the drivers than a smaller vehicle shouldn't alarm you, as long as you "feel" protected.

Happy trails!

Right, one should only whine about things like that when a Democrat is president, as wingnuts did incessantly when gas was at a "stunning" $1.40 in 2000.

Now that it's $4, everyone should shut up and give twenty percent of their income to the oil companies, like some people in the article.

Besides, it's like $50 per gallon in Sweden, so there. It's dirt cheap. I have some contact lens drops that cost me $2 for an ounce. That's $256 per gallon!

I'm so smart.

It's simple supply and demand. Oil consumption is up worldwide yet we are at the same basic production levels for almost 20 years. Refineries are not being built.
China is already drilling of our coast using slant drilling techniques. Yet we can't go get our own oil? Let's see who would be a little more careful, us or the Chinese? ANWAR can be drilled and it can be done safely. The same fear mongering was made at the time the Alaska pipeline was made, the wildlife is thriving. There are many other options as well that don't include using our food for fuel. Yet both sides of the aisle sit by and do nothing.

We agree on one thing, passive-agressive behavior is not necessarily trolling.

The Chinese are drilling in Cuban waters. Complain to the Republicans if you want to open economic relations with Cuba.

Production is essentially equal to consumption. Any other way over a long period of time would be impossible.

in 1980, the U.S. was producing 10.170 mb/d, or 16.2% of the world's total. In 2006, the U.S. produced 6.871 mb/d, or 8.4% of the total. That's nearly half of what it was a quarter-century previous.

Groups say they will sue over polar bears, drilling
By DAN JOLING
Associated Press Writer
Posted on Mon, Jun. 09, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --Two conservation groups plan to sue to protect polar bears from petroleum exploration and drilling off Alaska's coast.

The Center for Biological Diversity and Pacific Environment gave the federal government formal notice Monday that they will sue under the Endangered Species Act to protect the bears, which were listed as threatened last month by Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne.

Polar bears are threatened - likely to become endangered - because their sea ice habitat has melted dramatically and computer models predict further losses, Kempthorne said. Polar bears use sea ice for mating, denning and hunting.

Kempthorne said the best scientific judgments did not conclude that polar bears were threatened by oil and gas development.

The conservation groups do not agree.

**SNIP**

The groups say the Bush administration has opened up virtually all of Alaska polar bear habitat to leasing.

They are not seeking to shut down offshore drilling, Sheard said, but will sue to ensure that the government follows requirements of the Endangered Species Act.

The act requires federal agencies to ensure that any action they carry out does not jeopardize a listed species, said Brendan Cummings, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity. All ongoing federally authorized offshore oil-industry actions affecting the polar bear, from exploration plans to seismic surveys, must be re-examined, Cummings said.

Boats, aircraft and drilling platforms will add to bears' stress by causing them to flee and expend more energy, Cummings said.

**SNIP**

A 60-day notice of intent to sue is required before a lawsuit can be filed.

And just across the Canadian border massive oil and gas exploration is taking place. Will the polar bears move to America to seek asylum?

want to bet who funds these activists?

John: I had a 2006 Durango and fortunately I traded the dinosaur in late last year for a smaller more fuel efficient SUV. I never did care for that beast as it was noisy and had a terrible ride- horrible on my roids without a donut- if you know what I mean. I'm glad you like yours as the auto dealers don't want them as trade ins. They can't even give them away - new or used ones. They are becoming like buggy whips when cars came along. Good Luck.

The reason domestic production went down is because up until the past 6 years, oil prices have been relatively low. Producing oil in the US is relatively expensive.

Not too complicated.

Oh, so we should invade Cuba and take their oil? Great idea. I guess we already have practice with Iraq.
