Missouri Base Closures

Eleven years later and our communities are still benefiting from the DOD BRAC closure of Fort McClellan, Alabama. The 1995 decision to close the 81 year old base instead of Fort Leonard Wood passed by one vote. How much different would our lives be if Fort Wood closed instead of McClellan? My family and I were stationed at McClellan and we thought like everyone else that the base could never be closed. There was too much new construction, the Chemical Training Facility could not move, the economic loss to the community would be too great, there would be too many jobs lost, etc. We eventually saw McClellan in our review mirror as our political leaders were unable to stop the closure and we moved to Missouri. Ike Skelton's seniority and experience benefited Missouri then and does so now. Some have lost their loyalty and appreciation for his service and want change for the sake of change. Why would we give up the Chairman of the HASC for a freshman representative that has been "promised" a seat on the committee? As politicians begin calling for more base closures Fort Wood and Whiteman will be targeted. Seniority, experience and influence are our best insurance against losing these two huge economic engines. Regarding McClellan's closure Major General Martin was quoted once as saying "Our leaders did what's in the best interest of the Army and National Security"...."Unfort unately when you make tough decisions there will be people who suffer". Notice he did not say what was in the best interest of the communities or state. Just because Fort Wood and Whiteman are here today does not mean they will be forever. As a lifelong republican and a 25 year Army Veteran I place my confidence in Ike Skelton's proven leadership.
