stupid, stupid, STUPID. I smoke. I've smoked for 26 years. I hate it. It stinks. BUT YOU CAN'T JUST DO AWAY WITH IT.

It's one of the city's principle draws for many local bars and restaurants. Often, people drive from Dallas just so they can smoke while they enjoy themselves watching sports or hearing some music. I don't know how significant the economic impact would be to places like Sneaky Pete's, but my guess is that establishments like that would not welcome a smoking ban.

I don't smoke. I quit years ago. But I strongly disagree with a government ban on smoking.

If you don't want to smell cigarette smoke, DON'T GO TO THE ESTABLISHMENTS THAT ALLOW SMOKING. It's called freedom of choice.

If you don't like the food, go somewhere else.
If you don't like the music, go somewhere else.
If you don't like the fact that alcohol is served, go somewhere else.

Why are we continuously giving away our freedom and allowing the government to tell us what we can and can't do?

I like a social environment where people can have freedom. Even though I am not a smoker I do feel the vibes especially in a bar where live music is performed. The problem I have with allowing smoking is that employees are subjected to the incessant smoke for their entire shift and even if they are smokers themselves the daily exposure all their working time adds up to truly a health hazard with the most obvious effects being apparent in emphysema-like symptoms which occurred often in a matter of months.
I know from personal experience what I'll effects can be produced because for about five years, prior to smoking bans in offices, I worked for a major company where literally every office and conference meetings were the stereotypical "smoke-filled" rooms. I became an entrepreneur in chemical manufacturing where smoking was illegal and superior ventilation a requirement. I have never had lung symptoms since.
My suggestion is that smoking should be allowed in bars and clubs and even restaurants, but the law should require establishments to install superior ventilation following the Las Vegas casino model which not only remove even minute particles but scrub the air of toxic chemicals from smoke, plus enriching the air with infusions of oxygen.
Unfortunately the Vegas style air purification systems are staggering in their costs, 500,000 to several million, depending on the size of the establishment.
